St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Report: Austin Gomber's complete game, Johan Oviedo's solid start, and Bryce Denton's four-hit game

This night featured some great offensive performances, as well as two complete game losses and some non-existent offensive performances.

Gomber went the distance while sitting down eight batsmen by strike out.

Triple-A: Memphis 10 -- El Paso 3

  • Charlie Tilson, LF, 1-for-3, 3B, 2 BBs, K, 2 Runs, SB, Error
  • Harrison Bader, CF, 2-for-5, 2B, K, R, 3 RBI
  • Dean Anna, 2B, 2-for-3, 2 2Bs, BB, R, 3 RBI
  • David Washington, PH, HR, R, RBI
  • Sam Tuivailala, IP, K
Bader has mostly played the corner outfield spots (primarily LF) since his promotion to AAA, but got the start in CF over Tilson in this one. That promotion hasn't really slowed him down yet by the way, except perhaps on the bases, where he is oh-and-one on SB attempts so far, compared to nine stolen bases in 19 attempts at AA Springfield.

Washington made the most of his single plate appearance with his solo home run. His K% is pushing 40% since his promotion to Memphis, but he's still slugging well over .500 in that time, and with his walk rate just under 15% his OBP comes out to average too.

Double-A: Arkansas 4 -- Springfield 1

  • Paul DeJong, 3B, 0-for-4, 2 Ks
  • Luke Voit, 1B, 1-for-4
  • Andrew Sohn, DH, 2-for-4, 2B, 2 Ks, R
  • Blake Drake, CF, 2-for-3, Outfield Assist
  • Juan Herrera, SS, 0-for-2, K, RBI
  • Trey Nielsen, 9 IP, 6 Ks, 0 BBs, 11 Hits, HR, 4 ER
Sohn had the only extra base hit for the Springfield squad, as the team collected nine hits in 32 at bats, with zero walks. In fact, no free passes were awarded in this game for either side. This helped contribute to a very short 2 hour 18 minute game.

Class A Advanced: Brevard County 1 -- Palm Beach 0

  • Vaughn Bryan, CF, 1-for-2, 2 BBs, K, SB
  • Oscar Mercado, SS, 2-for-4
  • Austin Gomber, 9 IP, 8 Ks, 0 BBs, 6 Hits, ER
Oscar Mercado's batting average is now over .200!

Gomber joins Nielsen in pitching a complete game loss. Gomber's is a fair bit more impressive though. Both issued no walks, but Gomber allowed just the single run and struck out nearly a quarter of the batters he faced.

Class A: Peoria 1 -- West Michigan 11

  • Magneuris Sierra, CF, 0-for-4, K, RBI
  • Edmundo Sosa, SS, 0-for-4, 2 Errors (throw and a missed catch)
  • Eliezer Alvarez, 2B, 0-for-3, BB, Fielding Error
  • Brian O'Keefe, C, 1-for-4
  • Jake Woodford, 5 IP, 0 Ks, 2 BBs, 10 Hits, 7 Runs, 3 ER
Just a rough performance all the way around for the Chiefs. They had four errors in total, resulting in an equivalent number of unearned runs, and managed just four hits in 31 ABs to boot. They had just one extra base for the game as well.

Rookie DSL: DSL Nationals 3 -- DSL Cardinals 12

  • Esequeil Delgado, 2B, 1-for-3, 3 BBs, 3 Runs
  • Elehuris Montero, 3B, 1-for-3, 2B, 2 BBs, 2 Ks, 2 Runs, RBI
  • Brian Sanchez, RF, 1-for-5, BB, K, 2 RBI, R

DSL Nationals 3 -- DSL Cardinals 1

  • Wadye Ynfante, CF, 0-for-3
  • Carlos Soto, C, 0-for-3, K, Throwing Error
  • Brian Sanchez, RF, 0-for-3
  • Johan Oviedo, 2 IP, 4 Ks, 0 BB, 2 Hits, ER
Despite the loss, I'd call this another positive outing for Oviedo. He now has 9 Ks in 5 IP to start his career in the Cardinals system.

Rookie GCL: GCL Cardinals 10 -- GCL Mets 6

  • Delvin Perez, SS, 3-for-6, 3B, R, 6 RBI
  • Dylan Carlson, CF, 1-for-1, R

Rookie: Greeneville 6 -- Johnson City 7

  • Allen Cordoba, SS, 2-for-5, BB, 2 Runs
  • Shane Billings, CF, 2-for-6, 2B, 2 RBI, R, CS,
  • Matt Fiedler, LF, 3-for-6, 2B
  • Bryce Denton, 3B, 4-for-6, 2B, 2 Runs

Today's Probables:

Memphis: Alex Reyes

Springfield: J.C. Sulbaran

Palm Beach: Jack Flaherty

Peoria: Juan Perez

State College: John Kilichowski

DSL Cardinals: TBA

Johnson City: Austin Sexton
