A Peoria win helped the Cards affiliates avoid a clean sweep. Nick Martini was the lone Cardinal minor leaguer to hit a homer, but Ryan Helsley and Landon Beck put together a solid outing against the Dayton Dragons.
Triple-A: Omaha 5 - Memphis 3
- Tommy Pham (CF): 0-3, 2 K
- Charlie Tilson (CF): 0-3, BB
- Greg Garcia (SS): 1-4, 2B
- Patrick Wisdom (3B): 0-2, R, 2 BB, K, SB
- Deck McGuire (SP): 3.2IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
It's tough to write much about Memphis right now, injuries, a suspension and a lack of option years have taken their toll on the rotation, it is just Arturo Reyes and roster filler right now. Meanwhile they are last in the Pacific Coast League in scoring, and the players who have been producing have mostly been org. guys and minor league free agents (Carlos Peguero, Matt Williams, Nick Martini). This is going to be a rough year for the Redbirds and prospect watching until reinforcements arrive...Redbirds fans did consume over 3,600 tacos and 65 gallons of margaritas last night, so there's that.
Double A: Northwest Arkansas 3 - Springfield 2
- Harrison Bader (CF): 1-4, R, 2 K
- Bruce Caldwell (2B): 2-4,
- Paul Dejong (3B): 1-4, 2B, RBI, 3
- Carson Kelly (C): 0-3, 2 K
- Mike Mayers (SP): 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
- Corey Littrell (RP): 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R
That was a rough outing for Littrell, but his conversion to the bullpen has been good so far. He has a K% over 30 and his BB% still sits at 0...Another XBH for DeJong, who as loushuler pointed out in the comments below yesterday's thread made this weeks BA Hotsheet along with Harrison Bader.
A Advanced: Jupiter 3 - Palm Beach 1
- Darren Seferina (2B): 0-4, K
- Oscar Mercado (SS): 0-4, K, CS
- Danny Diekroeger (3B): 1-4, R, K
- Blake Drake (CF): 1-4, K
- Matt Pearce (SP): 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
- Rowan Wick (RP): 1 IP, 2 H
Last night was the 6th time this season Mercado has been caught stealing. which leads the Florida State League. He does also have a FSL-high 12 steals...Danny Diekroeger, whose hat is too big, is hitting well in his second crack at the FSL. He is showing patience, gap power and strong contact skills. He's a bit old for the league, but right now the two guys who can handle 3rd in AA, Bruce Caldwell and Paul DeJong, are hitting the crap out of the ball, so he's got nowhere to go for now.
Class A: Peoria 4 - Dayton 1
- Magneuris Sierra (CF): 1-4, K, SB
- Edmundo Sosa (SS): 0-4
- Brian O'Keefe (C): 2-4, 2B, RBI
- Eliezer Alvarez (2B): 1-2, 2 R, 3B, 2 BB, CS
- Chris Chinea (DH): 1-4, R, RBI
- Ryan Helsley (SP): 6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
- Landon Beck (RP): 1 IP, 3 K
Ryan Helsley has handled the jump to full-season ball well, he sports a 25.9 K% and 7.8 BB% through 5 starts...Landon Beck spent the last two years as a starter, getting OK but not great results, mostly in short-season ball. He was moved to the bullpen this year and has responded by mowing down almost 43% of the Midwest League batters he's faced...Eliezer Alvarez has taken well to his first exposure to stateside pitching outside the complex leagues, he is second on the team in wRC+, and leads the Chiefs in BB, R, XBH, and SB.
