Cards News and Notes: Matheny, Rosenthal, Cards get swept

yesterday's VEB, today!

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday was Wednesday, meaning it was time for another Draft Preview from The Red Baron. This one features three high school pitchers with what Baron considers some of the best stuff available in this year's draft. With three draft picks in the top 34, this is a year for Cardinals fans to be up to date on the draft.

Ben Godar wondered whether Matheny can effectively manage this year's roster, with all the positional versatility and interesting bench options. It seems like a bench made for a TLR-type manager, whereas Matheny is really big on predefined fixed roles. It was fun to think about how flexible this roster is, but now that the season is underway, Matheny's limitations will once again on full display.

In her Hunt and Peck Lil Scooter rightfully responded to some curmudgeon-y and at-least-borderline sexist comments by Blue Jays' manager John Gibbons, who equated the new slide rule to players wearing dresses.

John looked at how Trevor Rosenthal has performed as a closer and the possibility of moving him back to the rotation. I agree with John that the Cards have enough options in the rotation to keep him in the pen, and I for one think that Rosey's stuff plays up well in the pen, and he might be kind of a frustrating, if cromulent, starter.

The Cards got swept yesterday by one of their two division rivals. Not a great way to start the season, but there's still 159 to go. Check out the Game Thread for VEB's takes as they happened, and check out Dr. Howl's recap thread.

The Birds get the day off to lick their wounds, and then start a series against the Braves in Atlanta on Friday. Considering they're one of the worst teams in the league right now, here's to hoping they can be a slump-buster for the Cards.
