Cardinals News and Notes: Opening Day roster, playing time, and concerns

The season is just a day away

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

We are so, so close to the season, and I am incredibly excited. The disappointment of the offseason, and the mostly boring moves of the winter, and are well into the past. The fake games, the injuries in those games, and the roster guesses are all gone, too. Tomorrow, the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the very first game of the season that counts, and not in an All-Star Game-type of counting, either.

Yesterday at Viva El Birdos, we moved one step closer and tried to help everybody get ready for the season that is now so swiftly upon us.

John Fleming examined the Opening Day lineups of the past few years to decipher whether or not that assignment was a harbinger of playing time during the season.

We had another batch of minor league games on the back fields, and we have a recap of that action featuring some interesting prospects.

Yesterday was April Fool's Day, and we avoided trying to be clever, instead opting to provide you with a few baseball-related jokes as well as links from around the game.

I discussed a couple of concerns I had and things I would be looking for as the season started, centering my thoughts around Jedd Gyorko and Tommy Pham.

Ben Markham looked at pitcher projections for the Cardinals and made some over/under predictions.

Finally, if you have not had the opportunity to take a look at our comprehensive preview, please check it out. Get excited. It's baseball season.
