St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Report: Cardinals and Mets

Editors' Note: Players, and especially pitchers, often play for multiple different spring training "farm teams" during these back field contests, depending on throw days, rest, and who management wants to see on a given day. So don't put much weight on the current rosters.

Memphis 9 -Las Vegas 6

The Cardinals picked Harrison Bader in the 3rd round of last year's draft and he took to pro ball right away, swatting 11 homers in his first 258 professional plate appearances between the NY-Penn League and the Midwest League. Clearly Bader, who was rb's 11th best prospect, has plenty of power and thus far the combination of wood bats, professional pitching and a pitcher friendly environment hasn't slowed him down. It remains to be seen how his aggressive approach will play as he moves up the chain, but it is fun to think about what kind of numbers he could put up in the Texas League.

Binghampton 6 - Springfield 2

• Daniel Poncedeleon: 3 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 4 K

Oscar Mercado was rb's 19th ranked Cardinal prospect this offseason. He was viewed as a possibly plus defender with a questionable bat when the Cards picked him in the 2nd round of the 2013 draft, and three season later he still looks like a project. The athleticism has translated to stolen bases so far, but his defense has been inconsistent. Offensively he has yet to develop any power and his BB rate has shrunk each of the last three season, on the plus side his strikeout numbers have followed suit. The contact skill is encouraging, but with such an aggressive approach he will need to start driving the ball to add any value with the bat. The good news is he is still only 21 and there is plenty of time for those tools to begin to translate into results.

rb's 7th ranked prospect, Magneuris Sierra, was challenged with a chance to play in the Midwest League last year after he had a huge 2014 in which he was named the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year. He was overmatched in A ball and ended up back in extended spring training before finishing the season in short season ball. He will get another crack at a full-season league again this year. He has the speed and glove in center to remain interesting, and if he can show the gap power and contact skills in full-season ball that he did in 2014 his prospect status will remain intact.
