Mike Leake: 2016 VEB projection results

Editor's Note: Two years ago, Site Manager Ben Humphrey asked readers to provide predictions for Cardinals baseball players. Last year, he renewed that request, and although Ben is in blogger retirement, we at VEB renewed the request to predict how the Cardinals will do. The answers are now in, although projections are still out on many players if you have not yet made one.

We received 132 submissions for Leake's projection. Back when we asked you, we said this:

Next up is new Cardinals starting pitcher Mike Leake. Mike Leake spent most of his career in the Reds organization before a trade last season put him in a Giants uniform for the stretch run. That trade likely made Leake more enticing to the Cardinals as they were able to sign him to a five-year $80 million contract without giving up a draft pick in next year's Major League Baseball Draft. Leake spent a bit of time on the disabled list with a hamstring strain, but has been very durable throughout his career. Here are his statistics from last year:

Second Editor's Note: After a brief discussion in the comments regarding me asking you to try and calculate WAR and the difficulty with that task, as well as the possibility of high number skewing the results, I have decided, for the purposes of these projections, to eliminate the highest and lowest 7.5% of WAR predictions and go with the average of the middle 85%.

While some of these projections have been a bit high, VEB's projection in terms of WAR for Leake is right in line with the other projections. Perhaps that's because its hard to see Leake's upside, as he is much more of a high floor guy than anything. VEB projects nearly 200 innings, and between that, Wainwright returning, a deep bullpen, and another year of building innings for Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha, and it looks likely that the Cardinals will have enough arms for the 162 game marathon that is an MLB season this year.
