Cardinals news and notes: Catchers, Gomez, uniforms

Read about a couple of catchers and get caught up on yesterday’s action.

Two Cardinals catchers were in the news yesterday. Veteran backup and good guy Brayan Pena signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals almost exactly a year ago with the idea being that Yadier Molina would finally get a little more much-needed rest. Well, it didn’t exactly work.

Because of injuries, Pena only logged 14 plate appearances wearing the birds on the bat while Molina ended up taking over 500 trips to the plate for the seventh time in eight years. In fact, in 2016 he set a career mark in plate appearances and led all catchers across the league. Oh well, it looked good on paper, and good luck to Pena anyway who truly is one of the good guys in the league.

Molina’s backup in 2017 is still up in the air but no matter how this shakes out his knees likely won’t see much rest because it was announced yesterday that he will play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic this March. Not entirely ideal but if he still manages to hit in 2017 like he did last year I think we’ll all get by just fine.

Here’s what you may have missed yesterday at VEB:

Carlos Gomez

I called Carlos Gomez a potential nice fit to fill the center field void next year.

Uniforms

Apparently the VEB community thinks the current Saturday home alternates are the best uniforms the Birdos have ever put on. I couldn’t disagree more. If you feel the same Lil Scooter has specific instructions on where we should send our objections.

Have the best Tuesday you’ve ever had today, everyone.
