On Thursday afternoon, the Glendale Desert Dogs wrapped up their 2016 season.

Desert Dogs 3, Javelinas 1

  • Carson Kelly (DH): 0-3, BB
  • Harrison Bader (RF): 1-4, R
  • Paul DeJong (SS): 1-3

The Desert Dogs closed out their 2016 campaign with a victory on Thursday, defeating the Javelinas by a 3-1 final score. They finished the exhibition season 17-15.

Despite the win, the Desert Dogs did not advance to the Arizona Fall League Championship Game on Saturday, as the Surprise Saguaros won, too, and advanced to the game. If the Saguaros would have lost, then the Desert Dogs would have advanced. Nonetheless, the Saguaros were victorious and will be taking on the Mesa Solar Sox in Saturday’s winner-take-all contest.

On Thursday, the Desert Dogs scored their three runs in the top of the second inning off Javelinas starter Barrett Astin, who was pulled from the game with two outs in the mentioned frame. In the inning, Cody Bellinger, Nick Tanielu, and Courtney Hawkins drove in a run, Bellinger’s eighth and Tanielu and Hawkins’ fifth RBIs of the AFL.

Following Astin’s departure from the affair, seven Javelinas relievers combined to record 7 ⅓ innings of scoreless ball, including the Padres’ Jason Jester, who lowered his earned run average through 12 ⅔ innings this AFL to a 0.71 with a fairly clean ninth inning.

Cardinals in this game included Carson Kelly, Harrison Bader, and Paul DeJong. Kelly, who served as the designated hitter, went hitless in the game, but Bader and DeJong each recorded a hit, and Bader even came around to score.
