It was a late October night and a young girl stood in the living room in front of the television, enraptured by what she watched in front of her. It would be the spot she watched a lot of wonderful things, that spot just in front of the couch, fingers laced behind her head, at least until her family finally moved from the run-down old farmhouse nearly ten years later. And, although she eventually grew accustomed to the nauseating excitement of this type of situation, of course she had to stand and does to this day. It was October, after all, and the Cardinals were playing in an elimination game.
If the Cardinals had lost that game, and at times it certainly appeared as if they might, she would have eventually moved on, her heart healed from the torment of playoff elimination, but at the time, with a recently broken family, a sudden move, and the unwelcome future that would include a change of schools, the 2006 Cardinals, the team that toughed out the season and limped its way into the playoffs with 83 wins, the team that almost no one gave a chance, but somehow overcame it all... Well that team was her champion and she needed them to finish what they started.
On this day, October 19, ten years ago, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets in the deciding game seven of the NLCS and punched their ticket to the World Series. It was quite a ride.
