Tim Cooney vs Jon Niese

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Tim Cooney makes his fifth start of the season and his career this afternoon for the 58-33 Cardinals as they try to finish off a three game sweep of the 47-44 Mets. The Cardinals managed to dodge both Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom this series because the Mets set their schedule so the pair of elite pitchers will throw in both of the two upcoming series against the NL East leading Nationals. Thanks, Mets.

Jason Heyward gets the day off against a southpaw after battling leg cramps at the end of last night's impressive 5 for 5 performance (edit: He has a cold). Matt Holliday sits on what might be a rainy day as well, hopefully for no reason other than to bring him along slowly in his return from a mid-season quad injury. Pete Kozma gets the start at third because Matt Carpenter is "fighting it." Pete Kozma, on the other hand, will be fighting with the mendoza line. A 4 for 4 day would bring his batting average up to .214. Go Pete.

The Cardinals' OF defense will feature Peter Bourjos, Tommy Pham and Randal Grichuk in the debut of SUPER OUTFIELD v2.0. I've done the math and the range of this particular group extends into Illinois.
