Even though the St. Louis Cardinals had no game on the slate for Thursday, the team nonetheless did not take the day off. The Cardinals optioned righthanded reliever Miguel Socolovich to Triple-A Memphis. The move opens a spot on the 25-man roster that will presumably be filled by Jon Jay, who is wrapping up a rehab stint with Low-A Peoria.
The demotion of Socolovich decreases the active roster's reliever population by one and reestablishes the composition most typical on a major-league 25-man: 13 position players to 12 pitchers (and seven relievers). However, the Cardinals' current roster is nonetheless still off-kilter. It's catcher-heavy with Yadier Molina, Tony Cruz, and Ed Easley.
When the Cardinals announced that they had called up Easley to fill in for Adams upon the initial-sacker's placement on the disabled list, the initial thought was that Easley was simply keeping a roster spot warm for a few days until Jay completing his rehab assignment and was read to re-join the Cards. Obviously, that is not how the roster machinations appear to be playing out. The Cardinals, who are down an infielder in the form of a first baseman after Adams's quad tear, are now carrying five outfielders, three catchers, and five infielders (with Pete Kozma the non-starter).
I have updated the 40-man roster to reflect the anticipated composition as of Jay's activation tomorrow.
