You may have seen the hashtag #FerrellTakesTheField all over Twitter yesterday. If you are unsure what this was about, allow me to explain. Former SNL cast member, comedian, and actor, Will Ferrell, suited up for ten different teams to play every position on the field in honor of Bert Campaneris, who fifty years ago became the first major leaguer to play every position in the same game. Ferrell's achievement was filmed for a new HBO special from Funny or Die, in partnership with Major League Baseball and will be dedicated to the fight against cancer.
Some might have found the stunt annoying (and trust me, I can see that - one more "rich mahogany" pun, man...), but the whole thing was meant to be fun, support a good cause, and bring some attention to the game of baseball. While that may be a little annoying, it cannot possibly be bad, right?
