Memphis 4 New Orleans 3
Notables:
- Tommy Pham (CF): 2-3, 2 RBI, BB, K
- Randal Grichuk (LF): 1-4, 2B, K
- Stephen Piscotty (RF): 0-3, BB
- Xavier Scruggs (1B): 1-4, R, 2 K
- Greg Garcia (2B): 1-4, K
- Tim Cooney (SP): 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
Notes:
- Cooney outdueled Marlins phenom Andrew Heaney to pick up the W. Heaney had a rough second inning and gave up a 2 out single to Tommy Pham that led to 2 of the 4 Memphis runs. Cooney has had an up and down year thus far but has had some bad luck with the gopher ball this season which has led to a lot of the damage against him.
- The Memphis bullpen trio of Greenwood, Rondon, and Fornataro pitched three scoreless innings while allowing zero hits and just one walk while striking out three.
Springfield 2 Frisco 1
Notables:
- Charlie Tilson (LF): 1-5, 2 K
- Breyvic Valera (2B): 2-5, R, 2B
- Jonathan Rodriguez (1B): 1-3, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
- Cody Stanley (DH): 1-5, 2B, RBI
- Patrick Wisdom (3B): 0-3, BB, 3 K
- Rafael Ortega (CF): 1-4, 2B
- David Popkins (RF): 0-4, 2 K
- Kurt Heyer (SP): 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 5 K
- Lee Stoppelman (RP): 1 IP, H
Notes:
- This game was an outlier in a series that's been nothing but slugfests. Springfield scraped together a 2 runs in the 5th on three consecutive two out hits by Valera, Stanley, and Rodriguez
- Another nice outing for Heyer and against one of the better offensive teams in the Texas League to boot. Perhaps I've underestimated him a bit due to this stuff, but his pitchability and baseball IQ are off the charts.
Palm Beach 4 Charlotte 1
Notables:
- Bruce Caldwell (3B): 3-3, R, 2B, RBI
- Luke Voit (1B): 2-4, R, 2B,
- Aledmys Diaz (DH): 1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, K
- Anthony Garcia (LF): 0-3, BB
- Mason Katz (2B): 0-4
- Nick Martini (CF): 1-3, 2 BB, CS
- Tyrell Jenkins (SP): 6 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 7 K,
- Dixon Llorens (RP): 2 IP, BB, 2 K
Notes:
- Jenkins' start got mention in Jeff Moore's daily Minor League Update over at BP (subscription required). Excerpt below:
When Jenkins’ command is on and his slider is working, he can miss bats. He hasn’t done that enough as a professional, which is why his strikeout totals have been so remarkably low, but when he’s on, he has swing-and-miss stuff.
Wisconsin 2 Peoria 1 (11 innings)
Wisconsin 6 Peoria 1
Notables:
- Vaughn Bryan (LF): 3-9, R, 2B, 3 K
- CJ McElroy (CF): 1-6, RBI, 3 BB, K
- Justin Ringo (1B): 2-5, R, K
- Ronald Castillo (DH): 2-8. BB, 2 K
- Rowan Wick (RF): 0-8, 5 K
- Steve Bean (C): 0-4
- Carson Kelly (C): 1-3, BB, K
- Arturo Reyes (SP GM1): 7.1 IP, 7 H, R, 0 ER, 10 K
- Luis Perdomo (SP GM2): 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, BB, 3 K
- Kyle Barraclough (RP): 1.2 IP, 3 K
- Jhonny Polanco (RP): 1.1 IP, 2 H, ER 3 BB, K
Notes:
- Not sure what's gotten into Arturo Reyes lately, but in his last three outings he's struck out 26 hitters in 19.1 innings. In the previous 84 innings this season, he's struck out only 60 hitters. Whatever he's changed, he should keep doing it.
- Rowan Wick has not adjusted well to the Midwest League at all. He's now hitting .167 in the 16 games since getting the call and striking out well over 40% of the time.
