St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Report: Scruggs has a huge night in the thin air, Hald is brilliant, Perry strikes out every hitter he faces

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Memphis 17 Albuquerque 7

Notables:
  • Tommy Pham (CF): 3-6, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 K
  • Randal Grichuk (LF): 0-5, RBI, BB, 2 K
  • Stephen Piscotty (RF): 4-6, 3 R, 2B
  • Xavier Scruggs (1B): 4-6, 4 R, 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, K
  • Pete Kozma (SS): 4-6, 2 R, 2B, 4 RBI
  • Greg Garcia (2B): 1-4, R, RBI, 2 K
  • Tyler Lyons (SP): 6 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 7 ER, BB, 5 K, HR
  • Zach Petrick (RP): 3 IP, H
Notes:
  • Scruggs had a night for the ages. Through the first 5 innings he was 4-4 with 2 homers and a 2B, driving in 6 of Memphis' 17 runs.
  • Lyons has struggled a bit in his return from the DL, but Joc Pederson did a good chunk of the damage to him in this one, bashing a 3 run homer (his 29th) in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
  • Petrick made his third straight appearance out of the bullpen, role that could suit him well in September when rosters expand at the big league level. With all the attrition among the right handed pitchers in the major league pen, Petrick would be a nice fit with his velocity and funky delivery.

Springfield 6 Frisco 2

Notables:
  • Breyvic Valera (2B): 1-3, R, BB
  • Jonathan Rodriguez (1B): 1-4, R, 2B, 2 K
  • Patrick Wisdom (3B): 1-4, RBI, K
  • Rafael Ortega (CF): 0-3, RBI, BB
  • David Popkins (LF): 1-4
  • Kyle Hald (SP): 7 IP, 2 H, BB, 8 K
Notes:
  • Hald was brilliant against a talented Frisco lineup, scattering 3 baserunners among 7 innings and striking out 8, including Pat Cantwell and Trever Adams 2 times apiece

Palm Beach 5 Charlotte 4

Notables:
  • Bruce Caldwell (3B): 0-3, R, BB, K
  • Luke Voit (1B): 1-3, R, RBI, BB, K
  • Anthony Garcia (LF): 0-3, R, BB, K
  • Mason Katz (2B): 0-4, RBI, K
  • Nick Martini (CF): 0-3, BB, 2 K
  • Nick Petree (SP): 7 IP, 6 H, ER, BB, 4 K, HR
  • Chris Perry (RP): 1.1 IP, 4 K
Notes:
  • Chris Perry, 2014 (A and A+): 62.1 IP, 35 H, 20 BB, 98 K. Meet the right handed Kevin Siegrist everyone.

Burlington 4 Peoria 2

Notables:
  • Vaughn Bryan (CF): 1-3, 2B, BB, K
  • CJ McElroy (DH): 1-4, RBI
  • Juan Herrera (SS): 0-3, 2 Errors
  • Justin Ringo (1B): 0-4, K
  • Ronald Castillo (RF): 1-4, R, 2B, K
  • Rowan Wick (LF): 1-3, 2B, 2 K
  • Steve Bean (C): 0-4, K
  • Luis Perdomo (SP): 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 K
  • Jhonny Polanco (RP): 2 IP, H, BB, 4 K
Notes:
  • Jhonny Polanco, Peoria 2014: 45 IP, 11.12 K/9, 5.56 BB/9, 5.16 H/9, 2.71 FIP
  • Sam Tuivailala, Peoria 2013: 35.1 IP, 12.74 K/9, 5.09 BB/9, 7.04 H/9, 2.32 FIP
  • Just sayin' -- if you're looking for another potential breakout bullpen guy next year, Polanco might be your man
  • Vaughn Bryan in August: 54 PA, .375/.444/.500, 6 2B, HR, 10 K -- maybe he's finally making the adjustment. Peoria's home park has really killed him this season, hitting just .224/.292/.327 at home vs. .323/.380/.485 on the road. That road line is pretty impressive.

State College 8 Mahoning Valley 2

Notables:
  • Danny Diekroeger (3B): 2-4, R, BB, K
  • Alex De Leon (DH): 0-4, RBI, K
  • Nick Thompson (RF): 2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB
  • Darren Seferina (2B): 1-1, R, SB
  • Kenny Peoples-Walls (LF): 2-4, R, 2B
  • Austin Gomber (SP): 3 IP, 3 H, 4 BB, 3 K
  • Tyler Bray (RP): 2 IP, H, 2 K
Notes:

  • Thompson's homer was his fifth of the season, a 2 run shot that kicked off a six run third inning that put the game out of reach.
  • Seferina swiped his 13th bag of the season in the 1st inning then left the game in the bottom of the third, no injury was reported.

Pulaski 7 Johnson City 4

Notables:
  • Casey Grayson (DH): 0-2, R, 2 BB, K
  • Blake Drake (CF): 0-3, BB, K
  • Casey Turgeon (2B): 0-5, RBI
  • Oscar Mercado (SS): 1-5, 2B, 2 K
  • Cole Lankford (3B): 3-4, R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI
  • Landon Beck (SP): 5 IP, 4 H, R, 0 ER, BB, 8 K
Notes:

  • Landon Beck has 44/17 K/BB ratio in 33.2 innings on the season. He was a 22nd round pick of the Cardinals in the 2014 draft out of Anderson University. Might have found another arm with upside late...again. Water is wet, the sun will rise in the East.

GCL Cardinals 11 GCL Nationals 0

Notables:
  • Magneuris Sierra (CF): 1-4, R, K
  • Edmundo Sosa (SS): 3-6, R, RBI
  • Malik Collymore (DH): 2-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB
Notes:
  • Weird Stat of the Day: Four Cardinals pitchers combined to shut out the Nationals while recording just one strikeout on the day, coming with 1 out in the ninth inning. No word on whether the Nationals team was teleported in from 1912.
