Affiliates go 4-3 on the day.

Mike Zarrilli

Colorado Springs @ Memphis: Postponed

Springfield 6 NW Arkansas 4

Notables:
  • Rafael Ortega (CF): 2-4, R
  • Mike O'Neill (LF): 2-4, R, RBI
  • Breyvic Valera (2B): 0-3, R, BB
  • Jonathan Rodriguez (DH): 2-3, R, RBI, BB, K
  • Starlin Rodriguez (RF): 1-4, RBI
  • Cody Stanley (C): 2-4, K
  • Patrick Wisdom (3B): 0-3, R, BB, K
  • Kyle Hald (SP): 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, BB, 4 K
  • Kevin Siegrist (RP): 0.2 IP, H, K
  • Sam Tuivailala (RP): 1.1 IP
Notes:
  • Sam Tuivailala hit 102 on the stadium gun last night per reports from multiple sources. He's certainly going to jump up the prospect radar quickly if he continues to pitch as well as he has since being promoted from Palm Beach.  Keep in mind that the Cardinals have promoted two pitchers from AA straight to the MLB bullpen in the past couple of years.  Those pitchers?  Kevin Siegrist and Trevor Rosenthal.  Pretty solid company, I'd say.
  • Breyvic Valera is hitting .258/.333/.290 in 19 games since his call up. Tough transition so far, but I'd expect him to get it figured out by the last couple of weeks of the season.

Palm Beach 7 Tampa 3

Notables:
  • Charlie Tilson (CF): 1-4, R, 3B, RBI, 2 K
  • Bruce Caldwell (DH): 2-4, R, 2B, RBI, 2 K
  • Luke Voit (1B): 0-3. R, BB, K
  • Anthony Garcia (LF): 2-3, R, 2B, K
  • Mason Katz (2B): 0-3, RBI, 2 K
  • Kyle Helisek (SP): 6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, BB, 8 K, 2 HR
  • Dixon Llorens (RP): 1 IP, 2 H, K
Notes:
  • In 27 innings this year, Dixon Llorens has struck out 46 batters and allowed just 32 baserunners. FSL opponents are hitting just .141 against him on the season.
  • Anthony Garcia is hitting .314/.385/.571 in his last 10 games. He's still just 22 years old and is sporting a .215 ISO and a .352 wOBA in the pitcher friendly Florida State League. Wonder how he would have fared had he not missed a month due to injury...

West Michigan 3 Peoria 1

Notables:
  • CJ McElroy (RF): 0-4
  • Justin Ringo (PH): 0-3
  • Vaughn Bryan (CF): 1-4, K
  • Kenny Peoples-Walls (LF): 0-3, K
  • Juan Herrera (SS): 1-4, R
  • Ronald Castillo (DH): 1-3, RBI, K
  • Carson Kelly (C): 2-4
  • Chase Brookshire (SP): 6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, BB, 3 K
  • Johnny Polanco (RP): 2 IP, H, 2 K
Notes:
  • Johnny Polanco has been borderline unhittable in his last 10 appearances: 15 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 17 K going back to June 11 -- which happened to be the last game he was scored upon. Polanco went 2+ innings in four of those appearances without allowing a run in any of those games. He's been overshadowed a bit by Chris Perry, but the Nicaraguan has had a very nice season.
  • Vaughn Bryan: .253/.316/.368.  It's fair to say the bloom may be falling off the rose.

Vermont 8 State College 6

Notables:
  • Darren Seferina (2B): 0-3, BB, K
  • Danny Diekroeger (2B): 2-4, RBI
  • Jake Stone (1B): 1-4, RBI, 2 K
  • Alex De Leon (DH): 0-4, R, 2 K
  • Rowan Wick (RF): 1-4, R,
  • Adam Erlich (C): 1-4, R, 2B
  • Collin Radack (CF): 1-3, R, HR, 3 RBI
  • Cody Schumacher (SP): 5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Notes:
  • Rowan Wick Dinger Watch: None
  • Cody Schumacher finally got touched up in a start after putting together 4 solid outings to open his 2014 season.

Johnson City 6 Pulaski 5

Notables:
  • Oscar Mercado (SS): 0-3, BB, K
  • Casey Turgeon (2B): 1-4, R
  • Casey Grayson (DH): 0-2, R, 2 BB, K
  • Jesus Ustariz (1B): 2-3, BB
  • Blake Drake (RF): 2-4, R, 2B
  • Jose Godoy (C): 0-4, R, RBI, 2 K
  • Cole Lankford (LF): 2-4, R, 2 RBI
  • Sasha Keubel (RP): 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 K
Notes:
  • Blake Drake is the consummate Cardinal Way player: Contact skills (.318 BA) coupled with a good approach (.412 OBP) and the ability to play all the outfield positions. No word on whether he can play second base.
  • Oscar Mercado: .235/.295/.275 so far in 111 PA's, and his defense hasn't been stellar either, with 12 errors so far on the year. Perhaps he's getting to a ton of balls that he shouldn't and not quite making the play, but a glove first guy with 12 errors in 23 games does not inspire confidence.
