Cardinals Spring Training: Joe Kelly named fifth starter; Aledmys Diaz among those reassigned to the minors

The Cardinals named Joe Kelly the No. 5 starter and reduced the number of big-league campers once again.

Per KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman's tweets, Manager Mike Matheny has named Joe Kelly to the starting rotation over Carlos Martinez, who will start the season as a reliever.

Sunday morning, the St. Louis Cardinals announced another round of spring-training camp reassignments:

Sunday afternoon, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch tweeted that the Cardinals announced the following moves:
  • Angel Castro was outrighted to make room on the 40-man roster for righthanded reliever Pat Neshek. Neshek has won a spot in the opening-day St. Louis bullpen. Fourstick profiled Castro here.
  • Infielders Greg Garcia was optioned to Triple-A. As part of the Other 15 series, Fourstick also profiled Garcia.
  • Non-roster invitee Luis Mateo, an infielder, was reassigned to Memphis.
The latest winnowing of MLB camp leaves our 2014 spring training roster matrix all the slimmer with more cuts to come this week. Barring injury, only two spots on the St. Louis 25-man roster are legitimately in question as the final week of springtime exhibition games are played:

1)  Bench. The competition to be the 25th man has been clarified. With Langosch writing that Pete Kozma is unlikely to make the 25-man roster on opening day, it appears that Shane Robinson has the inside track for the last bench spot, which would make him the fifth outfielder in St. Louis. Randal Grichuk, with his 36.6% springtime K rate, is a dark horse of some breed, but the strikeouts indicate that he likely needs some more development time down on the farm.

2)  Bullpen. Who will be the early-season placeholder for Jason Motte's relief corps spot? The competition has apparently come down to three righthanded contestants: Jorge Rondon, Keith Butler, and Scott McGregor. Of the three, only McGregor is not currently on the St. Louis 40-man roster, which is chock full right now. It seems unlikely the Cards will drop another player from the 40-man in order to get McGregor a handful of MLB appearances, so Rondon and Butler appear the most likely players to become the Cardinals' Opening Day Hipster.
