Cardinals Spring Training: St. Louis makes cuts and an addition to big-league camp roster

The Cardinals send the organization's 2013 Pitcher of the Year and 2012 first-round pick to minor-league camp.

There are now fewer days before the regular season starts than have passed since the beginning of spring training. Consequently, the number of players in MLB camp is shrinking. The Cardinals have made some more roster moves, reassigning players from major-league to minor-league camp and a transfer in the opposite direction. The club's recent camp reassignments contain some names of note.

Reassignments to Minor-League Camp

  • On Saturday, the Cards sent righthanded pitcher Sam Gaviglio (NRI) to minor-league camp.
  • On Sunday, St. Louis reassigned 2012 first-round pick James Ramsey (NRI) to the back fields.
  • The club also transferred 2013 organization Pitcher of the Year Zach Petrick (NRI) to MiLB camp.

Reassignment to Major-League Camp

This time of year, the most common camp-to-camp move is from MLB to MiLB. But righty Scott McGregor has bucked this trend. The Cardinals moved McGregor to MLB camp today. McGregor is an organizational soldier who has been in the St. Louis system since 2008. McGregor lost the 2011 season and part of 2012 to Tommy John surgery. Last year, he pitched for Springfield and Memphis.

These moves mean that the 2014 Cardinals spring training roster matrix needs updating. The color-coding works as follows:

  • White means the player is on the 40-man roster and is all-but-certain to make the active 25-man MLB roster out of camp.
  • Purple indicates the player is on the 40-man roster and in a battle to make the 25-man roster for opening day.
  • Pink signifies that the player is on the 40-man roster and likely to make the 25-man big-league roster for opening day, but is in a position battle that leaves his role an open question.
  • Blue shows a player who is on the 40-man roster and attempting to make the 25-man roster out of camp. Most of these players will not do so.
  • Yellow symbolizes a non-roster invitee, which means he is not on the 40-man roster but is nonetheless hoping to make the St. Louis roster for opening day. Realistically, only a handful of pitchers might accomplish this feat (with sidewinding righty Pat Neshek the most likely).
  • Light gray indicates the player is likely to make the 25-man roster on opening day, but be on the disabled list due to injury.
  • Darker gray means the player was invited to MLB camp at the start of spring but has since been transferred to minor-league camp.
