Cardinals Spring Training: St. Louis options 3 to minor-league camp, including top prospect Oscar Taveras

The wait for Oscar Taveras's arrival in the majors will continue indefinitely.

Raise your hand if you had Joey Butler outlasting Oscar Taveras in the St. Louis Cardinals' major-league camp this spring.

It's tough to make the team if you aren't on the field. The lingering effects of season-ending ankle surgery a year ago and hamstring issues this spring combined to limit Taveras to just six plate appearances during his time in major-league camp. With no return imminent, the Cards decided to option Taveras to minor-league camp. He'll open the season in Memphis.

Taveras was not the only 40-man roster member reassigned to minor-league camp who will start the 2014 campaign in Triple-A. Today, the Cardinals also optioned righthander Eric Fornataro and catcher Audry Perez from big-league to minor-league camp.

The moves cut the number of players in the Cards' major-league camp to 46 with just 25 MLB roster spots to go around. The following chart is the current state of the St. Louis roster matrix. The color-coding means the following:

  • Players in white are those who will make the 25-man roster out of spring training.
  • Light gray signifies injured players who would be active 25-man players if healthy.
  • Purple indicates the players are competing for a roster spot.
  • Pink means the player is in a position battle but will likely make the MLB roster in some capacity regardless of how the position battle turns out.
  • Players in blue are on the 40-man roster.
  • Yellow signifies that the player is a non-roster invitee.
  • Dark gray represents those players who were invited to MLB camp this spring but who have since been reassigned to minor-league camp.
