In November, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired outfield prospect Randal Grichuk in the trade with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that sent third baseman David Freese and righthanded reliever Fernando Salas to the Halos and netted el Birdos center fielder Peter Bourjos. Over the weekend, fourstick profiled Grichuk, who now occupies a spot on the Cards' 40-man roster and is one of the Other 15 unlikely to make the big-league 25-man roster out of spring training. Last year, Grichuk won a minor-league Gold Glove for his Triple-A defense in right field. But, as fourstick noted in his Other 15 profile, the Cards seem bullish on Grichuk playing center field down on the Fabergé egg farm.
Rui (@rui_xu) decided to ask Jason Parks (@Professor Parks) of Baseball Prospectus about Grichuk's ability to stick as a center fielder. Parks was kind enough to answer. Grichuk tweetdropped and did the same.
@ProfessorParks Can Grichuk handle CF?
— Rui Xu (@rui_xu) February 3, 2014
@rui_xu I don't think so
— Jason Parks (@ProfessorParks) February 3, 2014
@rui_xu Yes I can :)
— Randal Grichuk (@RGrich15) February 4, 2014
So there you have it. The head prospect writer for Baseball Prospectus doesn't think Grichuk can handle center field defensively. Grichuk thinks he can. It will be certainly be interesting to see if Grichuk can during the 2014 season.
