Report: Oscar Taveras legally intoxicated at time of fatal car crash

The other bad-news shoe dropped Wednesday night.

Dionisio Soldevila of the Associated Press reported on Wednesday evening that St. Louis Cardinals outfield prospect Oscar Taveras was legally intoxicated when he lost control of his vehicle in the rain on October 26 and crashed into a tree, killing himself and his girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo.

Tessie Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Dominican attorney general's office, told The Associated Press that toxicology reports showed Taveras had a blood-alcohol level of .287 — more than five times the legal limit of .05 when he lost control of his car Oct. 26 on a highway in the tourist region of Puerto Plata.

Taveras was 22 years old; Arvelo, 18.
