Jimenez | Pineiro |
3.39 FIP | 3.23 FIP |
The truth is that the Rockies' pitching is better than it appears to be. As a staff, their FIP is almost half a run less than their ERA and is 6th in the NL, right behind...(drum roll, please...) the Cardinals. De La Rosa, the starter who shut us down Friday night, has a 3.83 FIP. That would make him 3rd best on our staff. Yesterday's starter, Aaron Cook has a 5.00 FIP -- horrendous, and we made him look like Greg Maddux. Today's starter, Ubaldo Jimenez, has been their best. He strikes out nearly 8 batters per 9 IP, and has given up just 0.27 HR/9 despite pitching half his games in Coors Field. Like Cook, he's a ground ball pitcher (52.8%) but he can actually throw the ball past hitters as well. His only flaw this year appears to be a relatively high BB/9 but considering the fact that our hitters quit taking pitches about a month ago, I don't think that'll be much of a problem for him today. Pineiro goes for us today to try and give us a chance at a series split.
