joe mather gets called up almost exactly two years after the guy he replaces, chris duncan. duncan came up on may 21, 2006 (he had appeared in a few games the previous september) and immediately got a start at dh; he homered in his second at-bat. at the time of his recall, duncan was hitting .271 / .359 / .448.

and it's just over one year ago that ryan ludwick came up from memphis, hitting .340 / .380 / .642 at the time. he debuted for st louis on may 6, got a start right away and went 0 for 4; a month later he had a .577 ops in 58 at-bats. but he posted an .873 ops in 245 at-bats the rest of the way.

mather, who will be the 6th player to make his big-league debut with the cardinals this year, arrives with a .311 / .400 / .674 line in 2008 and an overall triple A line of .265 / .354 / .523. prior to this season, his PECOTA projection was .245 / .315 / .428; his current MLEs are .288 / .373 / .589. if he splits the difference between those two, he'll be at .267 / .341 / .508, an .845 ops --- d'ya think he'll end up over or under those figures?
