5-13, 5.27

5-9, 4.96

if they win tonight, the cardinals will be fewer than 5 games out for the first time since april 29 --- the day before their first trip to milwaukee, and the day they learned josh hancock had died. they'll try to do it behind a pitcher who hasn't fared particularly well against the brew crew --- wells is 0-2 with a 7.50 era in 3 starts vs milwaukee this season. the brewer starter, meanwhile, hasn't won since may 7; the team has lost 14 consecutive times when he takes the mound.

milwaukee is 39-20 at home this year, vs 23-36 on the road. the difference is almost entirely in the pitching; they hit slightly better at home, but their era is more than a run lower at miller park than it is in away games. since the cardinals' last trip to milwaukee (april 30 - may 2), the brewers' have posted a 4.65 era in 91 games. the cardinals over that span have posted a staff era of 4.84; they've gained 2 games in the standings since then.

here's the series preview at Brew Crew Ball, a good friend of VEB. the lineups are up --- encarnacion sits even with the left-handed capuano on the mound, while edmonds and ankiel are in the lineup. encarnacion might never get into another game for st louis.
