howdy folks --- just dropping in with the game thread and a bit of news that you've all probably already heard:- carpenter got knocked around in his rehab start at palm beach --- 5 hits, 5 runs in an inning and a third.
- randy johnson has been scratched from tonight's start vs the cardinals; yusemiro petit will start instead. it'll be his 3d big-league start. he had a 4.09 era in 15 starts for triple A tucson, a decent performance in an extremely hitter-friendly environment.
- the cincinnati enquirer thinks the reds should hire tony la russa (hat tip, bernie).
- those of you in the environs of new york city: a couple of authors of cardinal-themed books will be appearing thursday night at the Happy Ending Lounge: John Heidenry, author of The Gashouse Gang, and Lee Lowenfish, author of Branch Rickey: Baseball's Ferocious Gentleman.
