quick thought about the imminent return of cal eldred -- whose roster spot goes? gabe white would seem the logical choice; he has pitched only twice in the last two weeks, and tony didn't even trust him with a 7-run lead and two outs in the ninth tuesday night -- brought in tavarez to get the last man. if that's the case, it would leave tlr with only two lefthanders in the pen, but white's worse than useless. only other candidate is brad thompson, who has more than pitched well enough to hold his spot . . . . kent mercker continues to pitch well in cincy, third year in a row; his salary's $1.25 mill'n, signed thru 2006.
