Cardinals vs. Red Sox score: Carlos Beltran strikes again as St. Louis takes a 1-0 lead

Carlos Beltran finally puts the Cardinals on the board against a weakened Clay Buchholz, but they're unable to chase him.

The St. Louis Cardinals' first run of World Series Game 4 felt almost like an anticlimax—not just because of the absurd ending to Game 3, but the way the Cardinals were unable to take further advantage of a weakened Clay Buchholz. Carlos Beltran—of course—finally put them on the board, driving in Matt Carpenter from second base to give them a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Buchholz rallied, though, retiring Matt Holliday to dull what looked like a dangerous inning.

Through four, meanwhile, Lance Lynn has been as sharp as he's looked all season, facing the minimum on one hit, four strikeouts, and 50 pitches.

After a Game like Saturday's it's hard to feel especially confident in anything, let alone a one-run lead, but the Cardinals have impressed so far. Lynn's performance is especially important, given the high-stress innings Trevor Rosenthal and Carlos Martinez pitched on Saturday; unless the Cardinals have experienced a sudden flush of confidence in Shelby Miller and Edward Mujica, their vaunted bullpen is temporarily a little thin.
