Hey, I sold my house today!  Drinks on me!

I was surprised to see that the Reds are still playing.  Er, I mean that games are still scheduled to play.  I wonder if the team missed the bus last night or something.  It didn't look like anyone but Cueto showed up.  Hopefully Arroyo will get more support tonight.

Firefox has crashed three times now while I've tried to type this up, so no analysis or witticisms, just the game thread.  GusBellsTaint would be proud.

It's Faith Day at the ballpark, brought to you by the Creation Museum.  I have no comments on that, but I often wonder if there is an intelligent design behind the Reds.

The season is starting to get tense.  I don't know if my nerves can handle this chase for the end of the season.

This is probably the biggest game of the night for the Reds.  A win tonight and they play tomorrow.  A loss and they have to wait until Saturday to play again.  It's all on Bronson's shoulders to get the job done.  Let's hope he's up to the task.

Thompson is a righty, so expect to C-Dick play tonight.  Rumor was yesterday that Cherry will be in the lineup tonight too.  I guess there's only one thing left to do.  Win. The. Whole. Damn. Thing.

Game 122: Reds at Pirates

Thursday, Aug 14, 2008, 7:05 PM EDT

Johnny Cueto vs Ian Snell

Partly cloudy with a 40-percent chance of rain. Winds blowing out to center field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Johnny Cueto 7-11 5.01 1.39 129 50

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Ian Snell 4-9 6.06 1.90 98 68

Cueto needs 78 more strikeouts to break the Reds rookie record set by Gary Nolan in 1967.  Since he likely only has 8 or 9 starts left, it's doubtful that he can do that, but he only needs 45 strikeouts to pass Orval Overall (1905) for the 2nd most by a Reds rookie.  That is definitely within reach.  It would also be great to see him get his ERA to down around 4.5.  That would mean he'd pretty much have to average a quality start every time out for the rest of the season.  It won't be easy, but if he can do it he'd likely become the third Reds pitcher to win 10 games this season - the first time that has happened since 2000.  (Hey, I know I'm stretching for reasons to watch right now)

Snell has really kind of sucked this year.  And the Reds have hit him well in the past led by Alex Gonzalez, Javier Valentin, Ken Griffey Jr., and Ryan Freel.  I think that means they have a pretty good shot tonight.

Today is the first day of the rest of the days after today.  Make the most of it!

Thursday Quick Hits

O2wstubbs_medium

There's not a whole lot of fun going on in Redsland right now, but I thought I'd drop some things on you:

  • I know we're all getting a little burnt out on Adam Dunn discussion, but I thought Patriot had an interesting split personality conversation with himself about the subject.  My favorite line:
Whatever. Dunn could be so much better if he changed his approach and tried to put the ball in play more often.

I suppose that’s possible. But now you’re evaluating him based on what you think he should be, rather than what he is.
  • By the way, Dunn disputes Arroyo's claim that he is looking for $100+ million.
  • JinAZ is starting to settle into becoming JinPA and he finally got to watch the Reds last night for the first time in a while.  Poor guy.  Anyway, he brought up moving EdE to LF, something that we've discussed on this site before, and it made me wonder, is there any reason not to try it out starting right now?  Do the Reds really think that EdE can play thirdbase for well into the future?  If not, then why not take this opportunity to get some time in LF while the coaches can evaluate him and, you know, coach him?
  • Similarly, Hal asks why Josh Fogg gets to keep pitching for the Reds while Homer Bailey is down in Louisville?  What's it say about the current Reds coaching staff that they would rather Bailey pitch in Louisville than with the big league team with big league coaches?  Clearly Bailey's not ready, but is it going to do any good for him to continue to be a AAAA pitcher against AAA competition?  But hey, at least we get to have Josh Fogg helping our chances of getting back to .500.
  • On a positive note, Drew Stubbs had an excellent debut for the Bats last night in Louisville's 6-4 victory.  He went 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, and a walk.  Bailey pitched alright, going 6.1 innings and allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out six.  In unexpected news, Devin Mesoraco went 1 for 4 in Dayton's 4-2 win over Great Lakes.

Edinson Volquez vs Jeff Karstens

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to center field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Edinson Volquez 13-5 2.93 1.33 141 63

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Jeff Karstens 2-0 0.00 0.80 6 5

Karstens came to Pittsburgh as part of the Xavier Nady deal with the Yankees and has yet to give up a run to the inferior National League.  Volquez came to the Reds in a deal for Josh Hamilton.  Hamilton > Nady, therefore Volquez > Karstens, right?

As a team the Reds are batting .218/.279/.380 in August, but they just traded that do nothing cancer Adam Dunn.  Small ball will rule the day and the Reds will score 10 runs tonight.  Bank it.

Adam Dunn continues to be gone

610x_medium
Al Behrman/AP

Threads are getting clogged, much like Adam Dunn used to clog the bases for the Reds. *sniff*   For old time's sake, lets take a walk down memory lane for some great Adam Dunn threads in history.  I'm sure I've missed some, so please drop a link in the thread and I'll add it to the list.

More than anything, Dunn brought out the sabermetrician in each of us.  That's evident here, here, and here.  Menace adds this one to the list.

Few were as passionate about the subject of Adam Dunn as BLee2525.  His fun with numbers series bears that out (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).

No list about Dunn would be complete without mentioning the entire set of Michael Diaries.  There are over 20 classic diatribes by our old buddy, and all have been bundled up in this beautiful set.

Here's a thread about the day Brandon Phillips signed his contract this year.  Surprisingly it devolved into a discussion about Dunn.  That's unusual.

There are obviously others, but that's a start.  What's your favorite?
