It's with this post I regret to share with you all I'm no longer going to be taking my regular turn at VEB. I've just had a tough time getting inspired to write about this team, even in the good moments for whatever reason. I want to thank lboros for affording me the opportunity, and for you readers for making it all worthwhile. VEB is a great community were we all come together with 1000 different perspectives, and whether it's during the fun times or the bad, we all stand passionate and concerned about our favorite team. I'll still be around to put in my 2 cents, but it'll be like the rest of you--either by diary or by comment. Meanwhile, I have remained inspired about the minors, so you can still check out my writings at Future Redbirds, and I know a lot of you stop by there after your VEB reading time and I appreciate that. Covering the kids has just become more fun for me then the big club.

It's been fun overall, and this season the team has never had a dull moment but it has had it's share of bad ones. TLR's DUI, Josh Hancock, Encarnacion's career threatening injury, to having the best story of the year taking a sour tone. I've been on the Ankiel bandwagon as most of you know, and I really don't think the dude did anything wrong, but lboros is right, the press conference didn't seem to help his case in the court of public opinion. Last night's game was sort of a capsulized most of the season. The game happened despite off the field controversy. They had many of their key players not playing due to injuries, and possibly lost another one. The pitching was shaky from the get go but the offense battled back to put up a 7 run inning in the third. It all disappeared due to some defensive miscues and while one of their old stars in Jimmy Edmonds showed some of his old brilliance in the outfield, the team still came up short. The relievers put up a good fight to hold things were they were, but in the end the offense couldn't overcome the bad pitching.Their superstar had a great game, but it wasn't enough. Back below .500. 2 games back of 1st place. Thank God for the NL Central, right?

Yet all is far from being lost, the team plays the Cubs 5 times before this thing is over, and a three game series with the Brewers. I doubt they have another improbable World Series in them again, and after this season, who knows who will be where? Ah, St. Louis Cardinal baseball. Never a dull moment. Thanks everyone again, and I'll be seeing you around.

Sorry to see that...
I've enjoyed your writing, erik.

All three of you guys that are the regular contributors have had very good posts, and I think that's why this is probably the best Cardinals blog out there(it's at least the best one in my opinion).

Same here, Erik.  We'll be keeping an eye on Future Redbirds, and look forward to seeing you continue to post comments & what-not here along with the rest of us.

Your regular insight will be missed here
but I know it'll only make future redbirds even better than it already is.  I know many of us don't have enough time for 2 blogs, but, if you haven't already, you should make every effort to stop by future redbirds, even for 5 minutes every day.  It's great stuff and I've learned more about the Cards' minor league system just perusing that site for a few minutes a day this season than I learned in probably the last 5 years.

As for the big club, Davis has some interesting splits -- lefties have a .428 slg vs. righties at .402 but he's giving up about 5 BB/9 against righties.  He gets a lot more ground balls vs. lefties than righties as well.  So he seems to have had a lot more right-handed hitters reach but lefties have hit him harder (6 HR in 39 IP vs. 12 in 135 for righties).  I guess I'm just searching for a way to get Edmonds out of today's lineup, great catch and DP last night notwithstanding.  If Tony would just move him down in the order, I'd consider it a compromise.  I've been hoping all season that his offense would improve but it really hasn't.

Erik,
Thanks for all your time and effort.  I do read future redbirds, so I'll catch you there.
My husband kept saying that the D's were due for a correction, there's no way they can finish on top of this division.  You look at the D's and sort of scratch yor head....except their bullpen has been nails all season and the team they put out there from top to bottom has NO QUIT in them- I guess numbers can't really tell you that......I'm sure the Cards respect that and hopefully will leave with a win today.

Sorry to maybe be asking a dumb question
but why is Thompson back in the rotation? I've been MIA a few days, last I heard we were going with the 6-man of Wain-Loop-Pinero-Mulder-Moroth-Wells.

Hopefully Moroth/Wells got the boot?

by TICY on Sep 9, 2007 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you certain Wells is out for good?
it was reported that out of the bullpen, only Wells and Thompson did a mid-week bullpen session as possible preparation for starting.  That left me with a question about how they were possibly planning on using Wells.

I frankly think everything is up in the air and anything is possible.

by nycardfan on Sep 9, 2007 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think if wells were under any consideration
anymore, then he would be starting today over Thompson. As lboros pointed out earlier this week, they have plenty of reasons to be leery of Thompson at this point.

by cardsfaninmass on Sep 9, 2007 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And hardcore legend and kindred
have both presented persuasive arguments as to why Thompson is a better choice at this time.

by nycardfan on Sep 9, 2007 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And
they're probably right.

But this is TLR. And Thompson is a kid who threw intentionally threw at someone up and in.

As I write this, Thompson is out after 2 shaky innings and Kip is in there....so who the f%&* knows what the hell is going on.

This 'staff' is really morphing into a unit in every sense. There's no clear rotation; just pitchers who can come in whenever.

A different spin on the Ankiel HGH report.
By way of background, I'm a physician, and I'm the chairman of the Institutional Review Board (the group that reviews clinical protocols for scientific validity and ethical appropriateness) at a major cancer center. One thing we always have to deal with as physicians is the HIPAA (Healthcare information portability and accountability act) restrictions on what information is given out. Whoever gave the reporters the copy of the scripts committed a major breach of the act and I'm not sure that the newspaper involved is in the clear either for revealing this information. I think it's easy for all of us to relate to having our healthcare information kept private. Anyone here care to explain why you needed that penicillin shot after the trip to Mexico? or how about that antidepressant you are taking? or why you need that script for viagra? etc. I'm not condoning the use of performance enhancing drugs, just pointing out that I think a law was broken here.

Any word on Molina?
Him being out last night made sense for getting knocked on the noggin so hard.. But out today too?  I hope he's going to be okay.  Cards needs his cannon/arm and bat in the lineup if they are to have any chance of staying in the race.

That lineup looks like classic "crazy tony". I guess giving Ankiel a day off is a good idea since he hasn't really been Hobbsian since the HGH story broke.  Shame.

Doug Davis has been pretty nails this year.  I guess Tony figures we'd most likely lose this one with Wonderbrad on the mound, so why not give the kids and washed up vets a shot?

I still say
Cairo is the guy who shows up at your softball game because a friend had him come. you only have 8 showing up and your short stop can't make it. So this guy who isn't very good says he will do it and because guys aren't ready to hit he ends up leading off. So this guy who you don't like by the way is leading off and playing short and he isn't even on the team. He leads off with a fly ball that goes off the RF head and he ends up scoring and later a popup is turned into a circus catch by this our of place shortstop. You hate the guy but what can you do? You only have 8 if he doesn't play. so at the end of the game you lose, because this wanna be homerun hitter pops up with the bases loaded, you have to thank this guy for helping you out.

that's Cairo.

Those Cubs Fans
If you want to see inside the mind of a Cubs' fan, go on over to Bleed Cubbie Blue and check out the comments at the end of today's loss to the Pirates. It's astonishing how many (not all) have already given up and are ready for the Bears and looking forward to next year! It's sort of depressing, actually...

Branyan walked?
Is it the end of the world?

by cardsgirl95 on Sep 9, 2007 6:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

See if this makes sense.
From HoustonCardinal on Friday night.

"Branyan is the classic three true outcomes player -- he leads baseball in the % of his PA's that end up as a BB, a K, or a HR.  46.7% of his PA's end up as one of those 3 true outcomes."

Which means no one but the batter (and the pitcher) affect the result of an at-bat (fielders' range, for example, that may be the difference between a hit, an out, or an error).

So it's not really all that surprising he walked.

by kwhiteside on Sep 9, 2007 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Many things to criticize Branyan for
But his walk rate is not one of them. For his career he has walked in 12% of plate appearances, roughly the same as Scott Rolen and some guy named Pujols. He hits homers in 6% of his plate appearances, again roughly the same as Pujols, and much higher than Rolen.

It is the other 82% of his at bats that are troublesome.

by sdesserman on Sep 9, 2007 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

has anyone else had
the following thought watching the game?

what if every time kip's turn in the rotation were to come around, tlr actually started one of his relievers for one or two innings, allowed kip to warm up in the pen and brought him in to pitch a starter's number of innings (6-7) then had the pen end the game.

if you figure that the vast majority of ml starts don't go 9 (or even 8 or 7), you'd just be technically using him as a long reliever, but planning on it.

whackier than batting the pitcher 8th?  i think not.

by sdesserman on Sep 9, 2007 6:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i don't see why not
I've always wondered why teams with bad rotations but apparently endless bullpen depth didn't try that.

If we win this game, maybe Tony tries it....why not? As you say it isn't any crazier than hitting the pitcher 8th....

by nota bene on Sep 9, 2007 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Best way to get Kip to pitch into the 7th
is to not start him until the 3rd.  Great way to mess with the other teams preparation is to announce  the starter that won't actually pitch more than 2 innings.

Of course it keeps us bloggers off our own by changing the anticipation.

We now have 11, The worst in the majors. the next fewest in the majors is  Oakland and CWS with 15, next lowest in the NL is Pittsburgh with 22. Not only do we have no pitching, but we have no speed. We are also last in Stolen bases with 46, and next to last in doubles. To add to that, we are .002 percentage points away from the worst fielding in both leagues as well. The only thing we need to be a good team is starting pitching, power hitters, speed and better defense

Thom Brennaman
It's interesting - whoever this new play by play guy for AZ sounds just like the recently departed Thom Brennaman (who left for Cincy after 2006).

Before the implosions.

by DriverZn on Sep 9, 2007 7:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't have let him pitch the 7th
why push it?!?

He had a good outing - our bullpen is fully capable of closing it out. With Kip - you just never know!?!?

by cardsfaninmass on Sep 9, 2007 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, it was only his 5th, but
Thats where he always starts to lose it.  Remeber thompson had the 1st 2.

You just can't argue with the move....not too happy with the result.

Franky has shown a penchant for the long ball all year long. God Damn it!

9 for them
6 for us. we had so many chances to score, too. this could rrrreallly hurt.

Looks that way
Frank has been nails before this series.

FRANKLIN!?
According to Gamecast's locations, he misses BADLY on his first two pitches and then drops one right down the middle for a homer.  sigh

we have to face their set-up man and closer in a close-game AGAIN. not good.

The one good thing from this series
that I've liked from the Arizona broadcast... they just showed the Win Probability on the screen. (66.7% for 'Zona, 33.3% to us)

Thats really cool and new-fangled.

by TICY on Sep 9, 2007 7:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wish...
I could see the game.  That would be nice.  Plus, it'd be nice to see that on screen (obviously, not many teams' broadcast's do that.)

they show that every game
It's sponsored by some company.

I live in AZ...and have seen that a lot.

alright, bear down...
we need this 3rd out. i have a bad feeling with byrnes up, though.

Walk Byrnes
Bring in TJ for Clark....

I cannot deal with the thought of Eric Byrnes beating us here.

Assuming it's 4-4 after this half inning
& we go on to score and win,
It's just criminal that franklin would get the win. I think they should change the rule. If you come in in relief and blow the lead, then you cannot be the winner if your team gets the lead again. Just MHO

According to the D-Backs commentary
Franklin "gets away with one" on every pitch....either hangers or fastballs down the middle..

by willievinceterry on Sep 9, 2007 7:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bad managing
If you mean, "Why didn't TLR use Johnson?" It's that Clark's a switch-hitter.

he is basically a LH hitter
look at his numbers.

Isn't over yet
and seeing that Dbacks closer (and his two pitches) on the third straight day might play to our advantage.

this year. Part of me just wants the Brewers to keep winning, so I can stop continously getting drawn back in.

Im going to have to fly to Phoenix and have a word with them.

by Valatan on Sep 9, 2007 7:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They're in a real pennant race (one...
...where teams have to win to get in, not like the central), so while you're correct it is irritating to listen to THEM do it, we did too last year.

by Ignatius J Reilly on Sep 9, 2007 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never did
I just think it's tacky.  And I think it's really tacky when the broadcast team does it.
