hamels

wellemeyer

14-5, 3.50

3-3, 5.16

todd wellmeyer still looks like a reliever to me. 3 of his 8 starts have lasted 3.2 innings or less; only one has gone longer than 5 and a third. his starter-only era isn't terrible, but his peripherals are, suggesting that he's not likely to maintain that era over the long haul. by contrast, he has been almost unhittable for the cardinals coming out of the pen:

era w/9 k/9 hr/9 avg obp slg
as starter 4.46 4.7 5.9 1.5 .271 .355 .451
as reliever 1.26 3.8 9.4 0.6 .174 .283 .239

again, those reliever figures apply only to his tenure in st louis. but they're telling, imho: as a reliever, throwing with full velocity and an abridged repertoire, wellemeyer has been rendering opposing hitters helpless. in his starts he's getting tagged pretty good, walking way too many guys and not keeping the ball in the park. it's a small sample, but all the same those disparities in strikeout rate and hr rate jump right out at me.

Wellemeyer
With all the other gambles we have thrown out there this season; this doesnt surprise me one bit.  Especially now with Mulder (potentially) going down again, Reyes being completely unreliable out of the pen or starting, Maroth, Wells, et al, why not give Welley another chance.  I just hope our offense is prepared for another breakout night.

Hamels is just getting back from the DL, if I'm not mistaken, soo hopefully we will be able to jump on him early.  This is in hopes that the Phitin's dont jump all over us early, say top 1.

Go Cards!
Lets get Albert to 100!

Why not just come out firing everything?
I'd prefer Wellemeyer to be dead tired in the 4th inning, pitching around people having only given up 2 hits and striking out 4 than nibbling for 6 innings and giving up 5 runs.

Hope.
Here's hoping Barden starts the rest of the season.  I'd love to see him get more playing time over Cairo these final two weeks.

Barden
I got this off of the Cards MLB site:

"You have [Eckstein] and whatever his situation is there," La Russa said. "[Barden] could get a start or two there. He's shown some pop in his bat and [Triple-A manager Chris Maloney] has talked about his defense. He's capable."

I hope this translates as it states and Barden gets the nod really soon or tonight.  I would undoubtedly select him over Bran-yawn or Egypt.

Nice.
Works for me.

If you haven't seen The Show on Mojo it's worth a look if you're into baseball reality shows.  It's a bit dated but the stories are interesting.  Plus, baseball in HD is always a good thing.  I believe Barden shows up back when he was with the Snakes.

He is starting...
At 2b.  Ryan at Short and Spiezio at 3b.  Also interestingly, Ryan is batting 2nd with So leading off and Barden hitting ninth.  The whole lineup is accessible over at yahoo.  I don't have time to type it in.

Lineups - wishes granted
Barden in at 2nd, Ryan at SS.  Although I don't get the order.
  1. Taguchi LF
  2. Ryan SS
  3. Pujols 1B
  4. Spiezio 3B
  5. Ankiel CF
  6. Molina C
  7. Schumaker RF
  8. Welly P
  9. Barden 2B

I'm not surprised that
Welley still looks like a reliever.  He hasn't been conditioned to be a starter for any significant period of time since 2005.  Let's hope he can give us 4 solid innings, maybe 5.

I think he could be conditioned to go back to being a starter if they decide to keep him around for next year.  His minor league stats listed earlier (452 minor league appearances with 488 strikeouts and 36 homeruns and a 3.02-3.05 ERA) look interesting.

Let that not hex you Welley!

Mulder
Bernie is reporting that he had both an MRI and a nerve conduction study.  That seems odd that he'd get a nerve conduction test.  I wonder if they are telling us about all of his symptoms and limitations right now?  Stupid question--of course they're not.  I fear bad news coming...

by nycardfan on Sep 18, 2007 7:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If he's having
odd sensations or pain, they want to make sure his rotator cuff, scar tissue, etc. isn't impinging any nerves.  I want to know which one they did first, nerve conduction or MRI?

with the mess the cards starting pitching is in, i say give wellemeyer a good look. he might condition himself for a starter for next year like looper did. i'd like to see a couple of the springfield starters up for a look. heck what you got to loose.might find a sleeper

What's the deal with Pujols not being in the game?
He apparently was supposed to be, but there was a late change. I think I just heard Shannon say something about a strained calf muscle, but I didn't hear it clearly. Anyone know what's up?

Perhaps Ryan missed a sign.
I didn't see Ryan's AB, but is it possible this isn't the first time?

Mark Grace on the Sunday game in Arizona talked about Ryan having a somewhat unusual personality--I think he said "flighty" or "spacy." That's obviously hearsay, but--why would you swing 3-0 on a guy like Hamels that just came back? I'm guessing he had the "take," and didn't. And if it's enough to get him benched--well, the old baseball coach is coming out in me. You wouldn't bench a dude for doing that once, but if it happened a couple, three, or four times...

As for Pujols swinging at the first pitch--would someone convince him to do so now and then?

Tony can remove that giant stick from his ass or take it with him on his way out of town.

And Al and his 'lesson of playing baseball right' can stuff it.  Coming from a guy who showboated while pitching, he needs to look in the mirror.

Swinging at 3-0 pitches isn't a bad thing.

Hamel hasn't pitched in a while.  Cardinals need to work him and not give him quick outs.

it could just as well could mess with Ryan's head
and lead him to strikeout, not wanting to swing on the fourth ball.  Who knows what Tony will say next time on camera to the whole world if he takes that swing.

And still no one can answer why TLR, if he's so concerned about things like this, doesn't sit anyone else.  He would not have sat Ankiel or Duncan, no matter what they had done.  And Eck has made so many mistakes--ones that have lost games--and he's never pulled.

Ryan
It was stupid to swing 3-0.  Hammels is on a pitch count.  He is a tough pitcher and we want him out ASAP!  Don't let him off the hook.  Ryan messed up.

All of you complaining need to realize this is why there are games the Cardinals do not hit well.  That is a little thing that you must do.

Ok.
Fine.  When Pujols, Ankiel, and Rolen pop out on the first pitch of an inning I want to see TLR remove them.  You play to win the game.

Working pitch counts is a nice concept but Hamels is a strikeout pitcher who has filthy stuff.  Batters might only see one pitch per AB, if that, to hit.  The pitch was in a bad location and Ryan just missed it.  If anything, we should applaud the kid for being aggressive.  Ryan isn't a bad hitter.  This stunt by TLR can shatter a kid's confidence for the rest of the season.

Then again, I don't have children so I can't relate to what those younger than myself are going through...

I disagree...
while I'm not saying a batter should swing at a 3-0, pitch I also don't think it means they automatically shouldn't, either.

Also, consider that Ryan ran the count to 3-0 to begin with. That was the 9th time he had done it. Now compare it to Miles, who despite getting basically 3x the playing time, has only worked a 3-0 count 7 times all season.

Wellemeyer is a reliever?
Well of course he is........and so is Looper, Thompson and half the other guys we've run out there since May.  I've got no grudges against Walt, all the free agents we could have pursued ended up hurt (except Lilly who we didn't for some reason).  I've got no gripes with Tony and the relievers called starters.  You just can't lose Carp, Mulder and Reyes to injury or whatever and expect to compete.  Hell, this ragtag bunch of pitchers has done a better job than I would have thought.  I'm just in a grumpy mood because the season is over and trading/free agent season is nowhere near.

You're wrong
Just because it is not on TV doesn't mean Tony doesn't do it.  He benched Juan instead of Ankiel.

Spiezio never played (and was later sent to rehab) after he got ejected in Pittsburgh when there was no one to play third.

Tony disciplines vets all the time.

Ankiel payed because he was HOT! Speizio  obviously didnt because of the substance abuse problem, not because he got ejected. If Tony wants to make an example of the one person on the team that actually hustles all the time and looks like he cares, so be it. Don't go off on him on camera like a jack-ass.
My biggest problem with this is that you have Miles playing instead of Ryan. That is not a good way to win.

Tony does not call out his veterans
for not hitting patiently.  I was watching the pitch count when Mulder was up and he was getting about 8 pitches to rest on.  He didn't go into a tantrum when that happened and it was harming our own pitcher.  I'm sick of Tony's double standards.  And it's not just veterans vs. young guys.  It's his favorites and it often has nothing to do with natural ability.

I think you are completely right
about TLR being completely unprofessional in both pulling Ryan and then yelling at a rookie in front of cameras.  And I'm disgusted with the team for treating Ryan like that.

Also, how will it help him at the plate?  He's been swinging the bat well.  Now they'll probably make him overthink at that plate, having Tony sit on his shoulder with every swing.

The announcers said that Tony thought Ryan smiled too much out there.  God forbid someone actually enjoy baseball.  I think Ryan's too upregulated for Tony.  Just because TLR looks like he's wearing a hair shirt doesn't mean everybody else has to act the same way.

That basically ruined this game for me.  For every person who has come up since Ryan, I keep counting their swings and then pronouncing when each one should be pulled.  Then I call Tony names.  Very enjoyable....

People
This is why Steve Stone praises Tony Larussa and Bobby Cox as two of the best coaches in two of the best organiztions in baseball.  They hold guys accountable when they mess up.

Just like when Bobby Cox yanked Andrew Jones in the middle of an inning when he was showboating and messed up.  He made a mental error and Bobby was not having it.

You need to hold guys accountable and make sure they are playing the game right.  Just because the Cards are out does not mean you go up hacking without a game plan.  Since when does a contact hitter like Brendan need to swing 3-0 b/c the pitcher may groove a pitch.  That is something Branyan my try.  Ryan is a good hitter, and this will only make him better.

Steve Stone talks crap about the Cubs never having a manager who held people accountable for not doing the little things.

Don't get mad b/c Ryan is out.  It was a good thing.

by ICbirdfan on Sep 18, 2007 8:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't agree at all
I want the batters to swing at the best pitch they see.  I hate it that Albert and Scotty used to just watch 3-0 pitches go right down the middle.  I never knew why, I suspect I do now.

TLR is a control freak.  However, he is no longer making rational decisions. He is no longer an asset to this team.

by DriverZn on Sep 18, 2007 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Once again
Swinging at the best pitch you see still results in an out 70% of the time.  However, taking the pitch with 3-0 count results in a walk half the time.

I'm not watching so I cannot speak to Tony yelling at Ryan.  But Ryan was wrong.

by enoscountry on Sep 18, 2007 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe...
It doesn't take into account how a groved pitch can be hit for more than a single, and thus worth more than a walk.

But even so, I don't see what Tony did will do any good. If anything, it's just going to make him never go to a 3-0 count again.

Ryan's not great at it, but he does work the count more than most other Cardinals, averaging 3.7 pitches AB. Should he be jumped on for one mistake?
Tony should be on Miles' case for hit pitiful 3.4 pitches per AB.

I still think Tony's right on this one
Excluding the non-specific "playing the game the right way" arguments.  Looking at the situation - it still doesn't make sense.

For a rookie to swing at a 3-0 pitch, with no one on, down by one run, and in the first inning makes absolutely no sense.

You swing at 3-0 pitches when runners are on and you have the chance to score by making contact.  By swinging there is over an 75% chance something bad happens.

I think the reactions from Tony haters are over the top.

i am not a Tony hater
but yelling at Rya, calling him out in the dugout, then pulling him for no freakin reason was something you see a beer league soft ball manager do. not a hall of fame 2 time world champ manager do to a rookie who's trying his hardest to help his team win.

It's one thing for
TLR to say, "Brendan, you should have taken that pitch."

It's another for TLR to pull him from the game.  To think that Ryan has to be publicly disciplined (and let's not pretend it's something other than that) to learn his lesson is an insult to Ryan.

Perhaps
this has been an ongoing issue and TLR and McRae have already worked with Ryan about sticking to his prescribed approach.  Perhaps not.

Still, I'm not a fan of a public dressing-down, either.

why the MRI?
i'm sorry to hear you are going through testing for whatever reason. uncertainty is the worst. it took 18 months to get a diagnosis for me, and all i can say from my experience is try to keep your chin up and enjoy every day. whatever the tests show, it won't change the outcome by worrying and fearing the worst (yep, speaking from experience here). don't get me wrong: anxiety is natural, just try not to dwell there too much.

at the risk of being a total dork, are you a harry potter fan? i ask because i find help and strength where i can, and often it's in some odd little passage of something i'm reading or watching. one of my favorite quotes is hagrid near the end of book 3: "what's coming will come an' we'll face it when it does." or, if you're more a lord of the rings fan...
Frodo: "I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."
Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." (my emphasis)

i probably should be quoting some more significant philosophers than rowling or tolkien, but whatever works, right?

Harang
Harang  is one hitting the Cubs through 4.

If everyone thinks Ryan is a good player, he totally understands what Larussa did.  It will make him better.  He is a grown man and I think he understands he messed up.  I did not see Tony addressing him but it should not be done on camera if it is negative.

by ICbirdfan on Sep 18, 2007 9:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Please.
Trust me, nothing Tony said on camera tonight to Ryan was positive.  Read TLR's lips if you see the replay.  What he said to Ryan probably can't be typed here given the overly sensitive nature of certain readers.

This organization needs a new direction.  The World Series honeymoon is over in my mind.

by champion on Sep 18, 2007 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure he treated Miles the same way
when he swung at a pitch as So was 2 steps away from a standup steal at 2nd.  Instead, he has to go back, and instead of runners at 1st and 3rd, we have runners at 1st and 2nd.

Double standards are fun.  Ryan got pulled yesterday after he made an error.

Tony's a grumpy Gus who is getting his hat handed to him this year because of his loyalty to guys like Kip Wells, Miguel Cairo, Preston Wilson, etc.  He's run players out there who were hurt, who were battling substance abuse, etc.  He's been outsmarted by the likes of Bob Melvin, Lou Pinella and Bruce Bochey.  He has openly negotiated his contract in the national papers, something he chastised Edmonds about for doing in the local papers.

He's a guy who has done a lot of questionable stuff this year but doesn't like to be questioned.

He needs to go.  The game has passed him by.  Station to station, stuck in your ways bullpen assignments aren't how to win baseball games anymore.

The call was a hit and run
I respect your opinion HL but I think your perspective is off on these points.

Loyalty to Veterans?  How did he win last year?  He benched Rolen because he thought he was hurt and not performing.  He mostlyh used Johnson, Kinney, and Wainwright in the bullpen.  He took Marquis off the roster and went with Reyes.

He refused to play Spiezio after he got ejected in Pittsburgh, when he shouldn't have because Rolen was hurt, and then just days later Spiezio "voluntarily" went to rehab.

To say Tony is nuts because of the situations you observe seems somewhat biased.

one out, runner on first, gb hitter, close game
you try to avoid the double play.  Are you saying that So had the straight steal sign instead and Miles' responsibility is to watch So run instead of the actual pitch?

TLR bashers
Why don't people step back and take a breath.  It has been a long frustrating season.  If our pitching staff was decent people would be a lot higher on TLR.  Pitching makes you look good.

What has Lou done so well?  He has definitely had better pitching than Tony.  That was kind of expected unless you don't understand baseball.

So unless you have some great manager in mind just deal with Tony.  There is a reason that people like Steve Stone like Tony.  Tony is still a good manager.

Why Not?
Why not get him the payroll?  How are the Cards going to keep up with the Cubs if they insist on being cheap as hell.  The problem with Larussa and Dunc is they have done too good a job with bad players.  Everyone thinks you can work magic, but they need the team to spend money.  I can understand people bitching about the people writing the checks but not Tony.

payroll
up until the last few years they have always been near the top of payroll. Just because you spend 150 M doesn't mean you are going to have a great team. Look at the  Cubs, that spending spree would have been worthless if this wasn't such a sad-sack division this year.

I even have the t-shirt. That being said, this isnt the same old TLR. He has had a chip on his shoulder all season. I can't believe that there are people out there that don't see it. From the extreme pissyness at the media because they ask questions he doesn't like after the team loses, to the seemingly neverending do I stay or do I go BS. He is definately doing things on a double standard. All you hae to do is look the the Edmonds contract tiff last year and compare it to his this month. He is not a good manager for a struggling team anymore. He even knows that.

Sane Voice
I have a hypothetical situation for you:

You are a manager of a major league baseball team.  You have just come off of one of your most successful seasons, and then things go wrong.  First you lose your ace, and your offense goes MIA for the first two months of the season.  Well it's okay, because you know they will come back.   Then your offense starts hitting again, while your pitching goes to crap.  Then a pitcher dies.  Then the injury bug hits.  You lose your catcher for a while.  Then an outfielder or two.  Then a second baseman.  Then a third baseman.  By the all-star break your team (including pitching) looks more like a triple-A roster than major league.  But somehow, someway you keep your sanity..  and your chances alive.   Good things happen.  Your starting right fielder has a solid season.  You call up a phenom outfielder who takes the league by storm.  Things are looking up.  You're right in the thick of the playoff race.  Maybe things will be alright.

Then all hell breaks loose... again.  Your starting right fielder has a freak injury that may end his career.  Allegations come out against your phenom outfielder.   And a season that was about to turn the corner turns to crap in front of your eyes.  You lose 11 out of 12 games, ending your playoff hopes.

Your whole life is baseball, your job, your livelihood.  And this year that has meant trials, frustration, anger, disappointment, and tragedy.  And through it all you still have to face the media, try to be positive.  The fans, almost as frustrated as you are, look for someone convenient to blame it on - you.

Okay.  Now you've peeked inside Tony's world.
Lay off him already.

Why not?
Certain things shouldn't be done in public like that.  It was all temper and no sense.  TLR had a temper tantrum and when he takes it out on a rookie who has been playing his heart out in very difficult situations--first at third, then SS, then second base, then back to third (which he's never played before)--I'm going to say it's wrong.  Every one of us is in a position to make a judgment about that.  Tony can't get a pass because of "what he's gone through."

Like I said listen to 670 the Score and Steve Stone discusses how he can't believe how cheap the Cardinals are.  He said based on the attendance and their play-off run and WS victory they should have had plenty of $$ to spend.  Now is STL going to become a team where the owners stop spending money?  They try to get bargins?  They could have had Lilly for what they are going to spend on "bargain" players.  Not that I am saying I liked the Lilly singing but at somepoint they need to spend.

When Rick and Shu' are both playing, who should play center?

My vote is Shu'.  He (Shu') is a better OFer and Rick's arm is more valuable in right.

I'll play the TLR's advocate...
The only valid reason for doing something like that is if Ryan missed a sign (to take) and it wasn't the first time he did it. I've chewed out a player in front of my team, but ONLY after multiple infractions AND after talking to him in private obviously didn't get the message across.

You know what, the da** message gets across then. As a coach, you'd much prefer it get across some gentler, kinder way. But then, some guys had what I termed a "learning problem," and you have to "help" them through it using extraordinary means.

I have no idea if that's what happened here. But that is the scenario that seems the most plausible.

you dont have a problem with throw
from the grass that shot hops the catcher? it wasnt an easy play for stinett. miles should have tried for the double play. if miles dosnt short hope it there's no argument. it was a bad throw.

you have to give your catcher a better chance than miles gave stinett.

Not what I wrote...
Obviously Miles throw wasn't very good, but Stinett should have made that play, IMO.  When you considered the PB earlier, Stinett botched that inning.
500- What it takes enough to win at Rummy, at Indy and in the NL Central.

by Zubin on Sep 18, 2007 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok, i'm confused
but you agree the throw was bad. so let go from there.

actually isn't that the 3rd ball stinett had this game? didnt he drop another short hop throw?

i agree stinett should have cought the ball. but it was a bad throw, and i think if you are going to throw home you better get it there on the fly so you give your catcher the best chance to make that play.

so IMO it's half Miles falut & half stinett's fault.

by gdm426 on Sep 18, 2007 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure without a replay
but it seemed like the ball was a tough play for Miles being on the edge of the IF and with the runner screening him, so he has a bit of an excuse.  On the other end it wasn't a good throw, so maybe Stinett has an excuse too.  But a catcher of all players should be able to handle a short hop to make that catch.

people are still debating the wisdom of pulling Ryan. Has anyone considered that Ryan my have chosen to ignore a sign, and that this may not be the first time he has done so? I don't know if that is the case or not, but it is much more believable than that a manager as controlled as LaRussa benched him out of spite or emotion.
