Game 112 Open Thread: August 9, 2007

young

piniero

9-3, 1.82

1-2, 5.31

after a news-filled day, the baseball game comes almost as an anticlimax. here's a blog post by derrick goold with everything you wanted to know about rick ankiel's return to the big leagues; here's a link to the post-dispatch's coverage of scott spiezio's substance-abuse problem.

tonight's contest marks the completion of cycle #2 of the wainwright-looper-reyes-wells-piniero rotation. in the 9 games of its existence, that rotation has compiled a 3-3 record and 4.39 era, which is pretty good by current standards. more impressive, it has produced 6 outings that lasted at least 6 full innings --- including the last 4 in a row. if pinierio lasts that long tonight, it will mark the first complete rotation cycle of 6-inning starts since --- are you ready? --- april 9 through 15, 2007. that's the only time it has happened all year, and it doesn't really count as a full rotation cycle because only 4 starting pitchers went to the hill --- reyes' turn in the rotation got skipped, and kip wells pitched twice. the last time 5 different cardinal starters lasted 6 innings or more in consecutive starts was --- you won't believe this --- may 29 through june 3, 2006. the starters were marquis, reyes, suppan, ponson, and mulder; carpenter was on the dl. in the last of those 5 games, albert pujols strained his oblique and joined carpenter in sickbay. . . . . be careful out there tonight, albert.

hat tip to the Day by Day Database's starting pitcher log for those factoids.

the brewers are off today, so a win would leave the cardinals 5.5 games out of first place. they haven't been that close to the lead since june 13.

I'm ecstatic for Rick
though unhappy about the way in which it happened.

Geez, is our pitching that bad?  More than a year since 5 different starters have pitched 6 innings in succession?  Yuck!  Well, the Pads aren't a great offensive team so it's conceivable that we could get 6 from Pineiro tonight, though he's probably on a pitch count.  Didn't he just throw about 80 pitches last time out?  5 IP is probably more reasonable.

Is Pineiro still on a pitch count?
Or is he allowed to extend it out now?

Wait a minute...I can see La Russa in pinstripes, and there's still TWO Duncans in the dugout!

Larry, here is the lineup
St. Louis Cardinals
Eckstein SS
Ankiel RF
Pujols 1B
Edmonds CF
Rolen 3B
Duncan LF
Molina C
Pineiro P
Kennedy 2B

What will be the reaction to Ankiel tonight by the Busch faithful?  5 minute standing ovation during his first AB?

I'll be giving him one from my living room, even as he goes 0 for 4 with 3 ks.

I'm sure he'll get a nice
standing ovation. Not sure it's what he needs or wants, but he'll get it.

I feel odd saying this, but I hope his first at-bat results in a walk.

Apparently Ankiel found out about this
at midnight last night, caught the redeye and arrived at the clubhouse to find everyone sitting in front of their lockers, listening to Walt Jocketty addressing the team letting them know that Speezer had a substance problem.

Basically he walked into a closed door meeting that was dead silent.

I can imagine the 'What, what'd I do' feeling.

Poor kid.

Spezio
It is possible that his DL stints for mysterious ailments and his occasional unavailability due to vague reasons are due to his trying to deal with his problems first without going to rehab, and maybe now  he realizes that he needs more help with his problems.

I'm trying to think of something more positive than he has even more serious problems that go beyond a substance abuse.

About Ankiel...
Since he's a mistake pitcher, wouldn't it be best to sit him against control pitchers (like a Greg Maddux)?

Quite an assignment for Ankiel to face in his first game back.  I guess we've got to see what he can do against quality major league pitching and this certainly qualifies.

Ankiel will wear #24 (given up by Pettini)
and according to Tony, will get a bulk of starts in a corner OF position according to Rick Hummel.

Bernie is currently thumping his chest saying he knew something was wrong with Speezer as far back as May.  He is copping out about saying 'we tried to ask about it but were shut out'.

Sometimes that guy gets me.  He wants to act like he is 'above' being a mouthpiece for the team and loves the 'I told you so'.

Ugh. Go get 'em, Rick.

Whats he supposed to do print an article about it?
He cant really snoop around, that is kind of...off limits you know?
people hear rumors, I know people around here do. (see the guy who heard coke)

besides I think many people have noticed him and other Cards partying, and stuff.

I dont see what you have against the guy.

by jealousblues on Aug 9, 2007 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dislike him
For the same reasons listed by HL.  His constant chest thumping and "I told you so" attitude.

I just think the guy consistently overreaches his boundaries as a reporter.

by stl tyler on Aug 9, 2007 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he's a columnist not a reporter
should he be held to the same standards/rules?  I'm only asking, not trying to be a smartass.

by Handsome B Wonderful on Aug 9, 2007 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he stuck to columns
I might not be as venomous.  I'm more up in arms in regards to his antics on the P-D board.

by stl tyler on Aug 9, 2007 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rumor mongering
For instance, his report of Edmonds and LaRussa's argument the other night.  He states that he was told they were in a heated argument.  He then goes on to speculate about Speezio's problem.

I just don't think these sorts of things should be reported on and speculated about until the facts are released.  It's no surprise to me that Bernie and TLR have gotten into it this season, if I were TLR I wouldn't want that guy anywhere near a clubhouse already rife with turmoil.

by stl tyler on Aug 9, 2007 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i understand your point...
on the other hand though he did just mention what he saw a couple hours (an hour?) early.

And he speculated it would be Speez, but didnt mention his problem. (and still hasnt specified unless I missed it).

To be honest I enjoy hearing some of the behind the scenes stuff.

by jealousblues on Aug 9, 2007 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's fine
I'm not trying to get into an argument, I just personally don't care for his work.

And he didn't see the argument.  He said he was told about it, which makes me somewhat skeptical in regards.  Is there really something there, or is it just being blown out of proportion?

by stl tyler on Aug 9, 2007 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WTF?
We should just leave the speculation to Internet message boards, instead of listening to somebody who might actually have an idea about what's going on.

Yeah, that makes sense.

All things are ready if our minds be so.

by Dexter Westbrook on Aug 9, 2007 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I'm Saying
Is that Bernie tends to act like one of those speculating message boarders.  "I hear a rumor that Jim Edmonds and Tony LaRussa got into a heated argument, so I'm going to report it as fact."

A friend of mine was at a night club last year and told me that he saw Edmonds,Spiezio, and I forgot the 3rd player at a night club. And it he said they were doing cocaine and out really late. I wasn't suprised really.....And coincidentally the next day saw the Cards lose the game in Chicago to the Cubbies.

what a bad day to go car shopping
i just got back and BAM! speezer has a coke problem, Ankiel is back. bernie's firing shots, damn. what a day to miss.

forgive me for a minute, but shouldn't they have called up Ryan instead of Ankiel? reason is, we have a lot of outfielders, but now that speezer's gone, we have only 3 infielders, and 3 bad ones at that. isn't the smarter, wiser baseball move to bring up a guy that can replace speezer? who is an infielder. i'm just has happy as the next person to have Rick back, but unless Juan or LUD is traded, i think we need Ryan more than Rick. at least right now.

either way, get well speezer. go get 'em Rick. we're all pulling for you.

People seem pretty excited about his return, but I hope that's for the story, and not for any expected production.

Given his track record, he's probably going to hit somewhere between like Mike Laga and like Russell Branyan - perhaps a LH Ludwick...

Germano's pitching.

A friend of mine from Seattle who's followed the Mariners since he was wee had some good things to say about him. He said his stuff is great but that he'd get frustrated out there and fall apart at times. Pretty much reiterated what Oquendo said about him needing a "pitching philosophy."

He described him as a more consistent version of Gil Meche, which is damning with faint praise.

How'd his strikeout look?
From gameday and Rooney, it sounded like he was doing a good job laying off high fastballs, had a good rip on that second foul, and struck out on a tough pitch at the top-inside corner.

Can't fault him too much for that.

2 AB's in
I'm pretty surprised that Ankiel has such a bad OBP at AAA.  Seems to have a pretty good approach on a pitcher that is probably very, very different from anything he's ever seen.  It's not like he hacks at balls.

His walk rate
Has gotten better as the year has gone on.

3 walks in 85 AB in April, 5/77 in May, 6/99 in June, 10/105 in July, 1/23 in August.  I know 1/23 is low, but that's a low enough AB number that the ratio changes dramatically with just one walk.

Empirically, he's looked a lot more patient since right before the All-Star Break.

yes but every pitch is 85-89 up in the zone
shouldn't MLB hitters be able to time that and crush those pitches? almost any other pitcher who throws a 85 mph high fastball is a mistake pitch, and it hit for a extra basehit or a home run.

Don't think it was one game
I can't imagine any manager leaving a pitcher in with those kind of control issues. He may have pitched out of relief and had a few two-walk, no out appearances. I remember checking the minor league box scores and getting sick to my stomach, so the overall line doesn't sound made-up.

Young is a good example of a pitcher
That can live well high in the stikezone. His pitchers have good movement and he has an unusuall release. Gomez did a breakdown a while back that showed how he uses his height to release the ball much closer to the batter than most. Pitchers with funky windups and movement on their pitches can often do things that go agains the norm. Its partially because they are unusual that the hitters have a hard time. Every time I see someone saying "Why isn't a high BP fastball being crushed" I think of the best example. Sid Fernandez threw in the 80, high in the zone, and was very successful. He sustained a very low (one of the lowest of all time) BABIP. This is why I fume every time I hear Duncan or the people here talking how you "Must get the ball down". Yes most pichters need to do this, not all. Its not all about velocity either.

problems trying to go LOW in the zone; they have to figure out a way to get folks out up in the zone.  Deceptive delivery and good movement is all they need.

Ludwick is a better hitter AND fielder than Enc.  Our OF needs to be Duncan, Ankiel, Ludwick for the rest of the year.

Ludwick is a good PINCH HITTER!  That is all!  Even Skip Schumaker is a better fielder AND has more speed than him.

i would also be OK with
an OF of Duncan, Ankiel, Schumaker, but I think Ludwick offers more power and better defense than Juan, and that's a LOT of lefties out there.  i also really think Ludwick could be a .900 OPS guy, and skip has never even put up .800 at AAA. He does look like a ballplayer though, and of course I'm rooting for him...

by cards13 on Aug 10, 2007 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

over that same period
ludwick is .250/.357/.472 = .829 OPS...  (the .357 OBP really surprises me)

over the period 6/25-8/8 he is:
.250/.330/.511 = .841 OPS

over the period 5/25-8/8 he is:
.259/.318/.547 = .860 OPS

and these arbitrary dates are all negatively cherry-picked due to the fact that he was 0-7 in the 2 days before tonight, and tonight doesn't show up yet...

Mood turnaround translate into season turnaround?
Rick has a low H/K ratio (.500) but a nice RBI/K ratio (1.333). OPS of 1.250!

Mike postgame: "And this is the Mercy Health Care Play of the Game. . . ."

Another turning point for the 2007 season, and maybe this one will stick. Let's roll through the Dodgers, then see Rick bomb the Brewers and Cubs to make it all official!

Everyone here seems really up beat about the Ricker and I just wanted to throw in my two cents. I was at the game this evening and I have to say that Rick's home run this evening was one of the coolest moments I have seen at the ball park in a very long time (and I was at the game Monday w that 10 run inning). You Do?
I think Tony would love to throw out an all lefty outfield against right handed pitchers... I dunno if you noticed this... but look at tonights lineup.

Eck (RH)
Ankiel (LH)
Pujols (RH)
Jimmy Ballgame (LH)
Rolen (RH)
Dunc (LH)
Yadi (RH)

Tivo'd the game while I was working
Just got through watching it.

Wow.  When Rick muscled that ball over the wall, I was speechless.  This game will be remembered for a LONG damn time.

Not to be forgotten, however, is PiƱiero's terrific start.  7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 SO, 0 ER, 90 pitches, 60 strikes!

Gotta like that, too.

All in all, an incredibly uplifting game.

they finally arrested Al Capone
for income tax evasion.
I pay attention to posts and comments about Juan Encarnacion... because he is the one Cardinal player that turns my stomach more than any other (from the very beginning.)
And I am very bemused (yes, BEmused, not Amused) at any tie-in which implies that Juan will be released (or traded, or whatever) because of the call up, future role, and (we hope) continued success of Rick Ankiel.

Lest I be misunderstood: I am NOT anti-Ankiel, (the exact opposite... have been arguing for his call-up for weeks) and I DO (desperately) want to see Juan's enigmatic carcass strapped to a rocket ship and sent to the moon.

It may not even happen still (Juan being booted out), but if it does, I hate it that they waited for a "reason."

Man oh man
Great game. From a buddy of mine at the game, who is an objextive (Reds) fan:

"And for at least one night, it was OK to cry in baseball.

In a word, amazing. It is amazing the organization stuck with him, but it's amazing he decided to stick with the game that brought him so much ridicule.

When they announced Ankiel was starting in right field and batting second, the crowd erupted in applause. When he stepped up to plate in the bottom of the first inning, he received a standing ovation. Each at bat he received a welcome round of applause.

The home run ... wow. As soon as he hit it, everyone stood on their feet. It wasn't a no-doubter, but everyone knew it was close. When the ball carried the wall, Ankiel gave a small fist pump as he rounded first base. The cheer was one of the loudest cheers I've heard in a baseball game. When he crossed home plate and walked into the dugout, Ankiel buried his head in his hands. If he wasn't crying, he should have been.

No one cared that Pujols was at the plate, or that he took the next pitch for a ball. All eyes were on the dugout. Ankiel appeased the crowd by coming out quickly and tipping his cap.

What a wonderful night."

Doubled. Cheers.

Boooo-urns.
