Game 121 Open Thread: August 21, 2007

barone

wainwright

0-1, 6.23

11-9, 4.01

an item from the top run of the standings: the brewers have sent chris capuano to the bullpen. he's 0-10 with a 6.70 era in his last 16 starts; the brewers are 0-16 in those starts. he should give anthony reyes a call. what the hell, let's compare:

GS IP  H BB SO HR W-L ERA AVGS
capuano (5/13-8/19) 16 86 110 35 82 13 0-10 6.70 .313/.382/.500
reyes (4/7-6/27) 12 65  68 24 46  8 0-10 6.40 .270/.340/.452

our 0-10 guy is way better than their 0-10 guy.

wainwright goes for win #12 tonight; the last first-year starter to get 12 wins for the cardinals was this guy with the big curveball. if wainwright goes on to win 13 this year, he'll equal the number recorded by this hard thrower. anybody know the last time a first-year starter won more than 13 games for st louis?

hell, braden looper might manage to get to 13 wins; he's a first-year starter too, i guess . . . . .

In other top of the standings news
Ben Sheets threw a simulated game yesterday and the Brewers, out of desperation contemplated throwing him back into the rotation with no rehab starts.

He promptly got a blister on that middle finger he tore a ligament in.  He's day-to-day.

Carlton
won 14 in what looks like his first full year starting, 1967...

by jfs on Aug 21, 2007 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

It all depends on what the definition is
for starting.  See, Looper and Wainwright had NEVER started a Major League game.  In the 1st year they did THAT, they'll reach 13 wins.

Going all the way back to 1950, I can't find anyone who, in the season they made their first start for the Cardinals, won more than 13 games.

I haven't looked him up yet
but I was going to offer... Lindy McDaniel
Or maybe he was a reliever, and prother Von was a starter.   to the web site we go:

partly right
Lucky Lindy went 15-9 in 1957, his first FULL year as a starter.  But he did pitch briefly in '55 and has seven starts in '56 with 32 relief appearances

by CurtFlood on Aug 21, 2007 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, there are a lot of
pitchers who had good first 'full' years but as far as the Looper/Wainwright situation, these were their first years EVER starting a game.

Lineups
No Duncan, No Rolen

Eckstein
Ankiel
Pujols
Edmonds
Encarncion
Molina
Miles
Wainwright
Ryan

Always a good idea to give the hot hitter a day off.  Also nice to see that the 'Ryan at leadoff' thing got squashed after we won with it.

Sitting the Hot Hitter
Interesting since Rolen himself says that it is tough for the shoulder to recover for a day game after a night game. Tonight, his shoulder will have had a little extra time off.

by Vinegar Bend on Aug 21, 2007 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

that is disgusting
we aren't quick enough of a team to win by small ball. We need Rolen in there. You said it best, he had a great day yesterday, he shouldn't be out of the line-up.

Geez, TLR is the king of driving me nuts.

Plus, I'd like to point out that Duncan hasn't played a full game since Milwaukee. The guy is not going to get back on track if we keep benching him! Rookie right-handed pitchers ARE the type of guys he should be facing.

I think I caught a glimpse

by nycardfan on Aug 21, 2007 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Very interesting......
glimpse which I missed nycardfan. I was under the distinct impression that Scottie no longer trusted TLR. High-fiving or low-fiving would indicate the "love" is back.

Scotty is a pro
and Tony is a pro.  Their disagreements always make me uneasy, but the bottom line is they both want to win.

** by the way VB, Mr. Mizell was one of my early favorite Cardinals.  It was a heart-break when he was traded to Pittsburgh in 1960 (where, by the way, he went 13-5 for the world champs... for the life of me I can't remember if he pithed in the WS that year or not)

by CurtFlood on Aug 21, 2007 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Wilmer Mizell.....
(no wonder he went by "Vinegar Bend")... he pitched in the '60 WS against the Yanks and lost with an ERA of 15.43 for his one postseason start..

Never returned home to Vineger Bend Alabama after baseball, but the "Proud Home" sign outside town is still standing, but unreadable. He worked for Pepsi, G. Ford, Reagan and G H Bush in later life as a hardcore conservative type after a 90-88 career in baseball.

Eck leads off?
<Insert ritual TLR "bizarro lineup" rolling of the eyes>

Why in the world would he put Eck back in the leadoff spot?  Eck saw a total of 10 pitches all day yesterday while getting his 0-3 (plus a BB).  Meanwhile Ryan saw OVER 10 pitches in just ONE of his at bats (12), and a total of 27 pitches!

Brendan's line is .337/.409/.506 (.915)
Eckstein's line is .294/.340/.355 (.695)

And Ryan can steal a base.  Why give up almost 70 pts of OBP, another likely AB with +.220 OPS, and speed to have Eck lead off?  I just don't get it.

There must be something else at work here that we don't know...like there was with Rolen.

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

maybe Tony rented
one of those tumblers with the ping-pong balls... and the 'eck' ball came out first.

Seriously... it probably has something to do with the Fla. pitcher, altho I have no idea what.
The quasi-annoying thing about Tony is he ALWAYS has a cogent explanation for things like this.

by CurtFlood on Aug 21, 2007 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it may simply be
paying respect to the veteran.  TLR says he always goes with the top performer but he seems to have problems following his own advice...

by nycardfan on Aug 21, 2007 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Your putting a lot of stock
in Brendan Ryan's limited number of at bats at the majors.  Eckstein is probably going to stay around a .340 OBP for the rest of the season.  Ryan could go cold very easily.

by azruavatar on Aug 21, 2007 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

enjoy the gettin
while the gettin is good. I was complaining about it  at the ballpark last week BEFORE Ryan got called up. My sister promptly reminded me things were going good and to quit whining. I smile and the next thing I know Ankiel hits 2 HRs and I am uber happy. So for the rest of this good run I am not complaining.
On another note, does anyone know how I can get the Cards to give my sis season tickets. We figured it out and she is now 14-0. I think they would want her around. They can throw in an extra for me if they want.

Whatever happens this year
I'm really happy w/ the progress that Wainwright and Reyes have made and think the book is still open on Looper as well.

This set really gives the Cards an opportunity -- w/ so many home games coming in the next couple of weeks.  The Cards have to make the most of their home games vs. opponents such as the Marlins.

by chuckb on Aug 21, 2007 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

Is what Reyes has done progress?
I guess his start on Thursday will kinda help decide that.  However, isn't he having a worse year this year than last?

As far as Wainwright, these last 2 times out he has pitched without his best 'stuff' and has been able to shut down 2 major league offenses.  That's the sign of a front end starter.

Call up PJ Walters!

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 21, 2007 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering
Reyes got consistently worse last year - ERA went up every month, WS outlier excluded - I don't know.

He looked on a similar path this year but posted his first month in the big leagues where his ERA went down.  It may be a random spike, but I'd call it progress for now.

What is the deal with Pujols at home this year?
He seems to be struggling mightly in his home ballpark.  A quick rundown of his career in Busch III compared to his two year away splits:

I Split     G   AB    R    H  2B  3B  HR  RBI  BB  IBB  SO  HBP   GDP    BA   OBP   SLG   OPS

Away 2006  71  268   53   85  13   1  25   67  42  13   27   1     10   .317  .409  .653 1.062
Away 2007  63  233   51   82  12   0  19   39  44  12   27   4      9   .352  .458  .648 1.106

Away Ttl  134  501   104 167  25   1  44  106  86  25   54   5     19
Bsch III  129  473   94  151  33   0  33  111  83  20   47   5     21   .319  .423  .598 1.021

Basically, in 2006, he had a pretty even split between home and away.  This year, however, he's practially 'half' the player in Busch III than he is on the road.  That does not bode well for our remaining home games.  Diedra needs to change her cooking or something.

GOAT: Eckstein
Eck isn't going to hit a homer... He's not likely to take one deep enough for a sac fly.  If he takes an upper cut swing its going to a shallow pop fly or a infield pop up... possibly a bloop hit, but not likely.

The result?
Upper swing
pop out to shallow center

Albert
is by far the Majors' solo homerun champion.

He is struggling though with runners on, but I'll take the ones that are solo variety as well.

by KYCards on Aug 21, 2007 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

You know,
I don't think it's really a matter of Albert necessarily struggling with runners on.  The only time pitchers give him anything even remotely hittable is when he comes up with the bases empty.  Now, he does hurt himself, trying to do it all himself and expanding his zone in RBI situations, swinging at pitches he lets go otherwise, but I think his apparent struggles with men on has more to do with the way he's piched than anything.
To hell with your spoiled baby! I need those shoes!

by the red baron on Aug 22, 2007 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

My biggest complaint on Albert's hitting
is that he gets himself into holes way too often.  Watch the next time he runs a count 3-0.  Now, conventional wisdom tell little leaguers and what-nots to take on 3-0.

However, if your Albert Pujols you should be sitting on a fastball and depositing every single time.  He doesn't.  I know this (have for at least 3 or more years) and I know opposing teams/pitchers know this.

When he's got a count 3-0, he just stands there.  Doens't even take his normal batting stance, it's like he's watching an intentional walk, except the pitcher grooves a fastball down the middle of the plate (I'd estimate 90% of the time).

Now, he's at 3-1 and the pitcher will often throw breaking stuff away the next couple of pitches, which he usually fouls off.  The announcers usually give him kudos for fouling off such tough pitches until he get's a 3-2 pitch that is close enough to swing at but results in either a grounder to ss or a pop up to 2b.  That is as long as the pitcher hasn't made a "mistake" by then and gotten one over too much of the plate.

All of this could have been avoided if he'd just hammer that 3-0 fastball down the middle of the plate.  But he never does.

When we score 2 or less our record is 2-38.
We've been shut out 10 times
Scored 1 run 19 times and lost all 19.
Scored 2 runs 11 times and won 2 lost 9
When we score 3 we are 8-12.

So in a third of our games we have scored 2 or less!
I wonder if anyone else has as dismal a record?

this is ridiculous
how many of eckstein's family members are on this thread? he gets defended to the death for going 1-4 with a single.

there is no reason brendan ryan shouldn't be the leadoff hitter right now. i understand he is young, small sample size, whatever. but until that sample size gets larger and worse enough to match eckstein's, there's absolutely no reason ryan isn't a better leadoff hitter.

I believe in the Sports Guy rule. Any "complaining" in this post is actually happy, cheerful "constructive criticism."

What I said
Was being taken to harsh. Just as everyone else here, I want to win. And I think Ryan leading off and playing SS gives us the best chance...Right now. He's swinging a good stick and will never be upped in the field by Eckstein. No doubt...I'm impressed by what he's done. And deserves to be put there so we can see how capable he is, along with giving us a better chance to win.

My original statement was not to be a BIG Eckstein defender. It was directed towards those who say things like "Why is he still playing" or "Does Eck have any use on this team". I think he deserves to be here and play. I don't mind a guy who plays a hard 9 and is hitting close to .300 Compared to Ryan, Eckstein falls short. But I just wanted to voice my opinion on him. That's all.

by Pujols Is A God on Aug 21, 2007 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

point taken.
eckstein definitely deserves to be playing - and starting - for this team right now, by default if for no other reason. he's better than miles, and was better than kennedy before he was hurt. eck/ryan should be the middle infield. ryan should be starting.

next year might be another matter. but for this year, definitely, eckstein has his place.

I believe in the Sports Guy rule. Any "complaining" in this post is actually happy, cheerful "constructive criticism."

Exactly
Thanks for understanding. I was going to say something about him being better than Miles in my post too. But didn't want to jinx it. And then Miles comes through with a RBI. Ha. Gotta love it.

And I agree...Next year is a whole new ballgame. Especially if Ryan continues for the next 40 games...and hopefully more.

by Pujols Is A God on Aug 21, 2007 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

people are not haters
just because they want the team's leadoff hitter to have an obp higher than .340. or because they would prefer to have a shortstop with a better arm, or better range, or better health, or a better slugging percentage. that does not make them haters, and it does not constitute bashing.

and a single to make a guy 1-4 on the night, raising his season ops to a gritty, scrappy .692, would not do much to "quiet" the "haters" if there were any.

which to me, without studying it, sounds like
an iso problem. which would create a higher % of singles, and a lower % of xbh - thus, as a percentage of runners on base, a lower % of risp, and thus higher lob.

if an error is made with 2 outs
all runs afterwards are unearned because if the play was made, the inning would have been over.

Play Ends an Inning
That play by Ramirez would have ended the inning, so anything after is unearned. Completely moronic. I also don;t understand why a run is unearned if a pitcher makes the error - it's his fault...some baseball rules elude me

by brafi on Aug 21, 2007 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

ERA is an artificial construct
of the pitcher's pitching ability.  The fact that he fields his position like a Detroit Tiger is not meant to be absorbed into the statistic.

The error on Juan's grounder would have ended the inning if they had gotten the out.  So none of the runs would have scored.

I was at the game and I thought that Yadi picked of the runner on 1st to end the eighth?  Was that after the strikeout and he just threw before the K was called?

Yup
Everything that happened after the strike out shall be forever wiped from our memory banks.  Much like the two and a half innings I DID NOT WATCH in Chicago Sunday evening.

I DID NOT walk 12 blocks in the rain (twice).

I DID NOT sit through a 2 hour rain delay.

The bleacherites DID NOT throw garbage on the field.

None of this happeded.

Ugh, I guess I'm just bitter since the make-up game has been scheduled for a Monday day game and I can't go because non-Cub fans, like myself, actually have jobs.
