The NL "Comedy" Central?

OK, so everyone keeps saying that the NL Central is the worst division and all of that...and I'm sort of sick of hearing it.

Reasons why they may not be the worst...but one of the most competitive:

  1. The World Series winner in '06 came from the NL Central.
  2. The World Series runners up in '04 and '05 came from the NL Central.
  3. There are 4 teams in the NL Central that have played .500 or 1 game over or 1 game under against NL Central foes this season (pretty competitive!)
  4. Everyone in the division is within 11.5 games, the closest margin of any division (actually, all but the NL West have two teams further out of contention than that.)
  5. 2 of the last three NL Cy Young awards have been NL Central players and one of the last two non-Bonds MVP awards in the NL came from the Central.
OK, there's my biased, semi-slanted (yet accurate) post regarding that.

Our division
is kind of bad this year, but I am also tired of hearing the Comedy Central tag line.  But take heart, just two short years ago, the NL West was mocked with the punch line "NL Worst" and now we hear about how great their pitching is and how competitive the division is.  "Comedy Central" - this too shall pass.

question
How are '04, '05, and '06 relevant to the quality of the division in '07?

Nothing really,
but whenever I hear the Comedy Central shtick, I immediately think, "Oh yeah, well, the last three NL pennants have come from this division.  How bad is that?"  Knee jerk reaction, I guess.

because
it's been called a poor division for more than just this year.
On with the youth movement!

But you also got to look
at who most of the talking heads are who calls it the Comedy Central.

I have a feeling most are not too far from the Atlantic Ocean.

The St. Louis
Post-Dispatch writers use the phrase sometimes too.

True
but I bet they didn't come up with it.

Do what I do, call the American League the "Amateur League" I've been doing that for years to some of my AL loving friends.

"Amateur League"?
get real; i'm a die-hard cards fan but even i respect the superior play in the AL...  of course, that's only for now, i'm sure in a while the balance of power will shift much like it has in the NBA and NFL...
get up, baby!

LOL!!
It's just a joke or a "chest pumping" saying.

It's not based on anything from the past couple of years.  A good friend of mine who was also a die-hard NL/Cardinals fan was using that term even back in the mid 80's. I use it from time to time to have fun with some friends who swear on everything Yankees and American League.

Nobody should take it serious just like the term "NL Comedy Central".

AL and NL
They always bounce around on wich is stronger.  You'll notice that the AL only has a one game lead in the All-Star game, desptie winning the last what 9 in a row.  That shows that the NL was once a dommint league as well.
Save the Kipper don't make him go back out there.

give us a DH
and we'll see which league is better.
On with the youth movement!

my two cents is this
while you can't get around the fact that the NL Central is the only one of the six divisions with a losing record, the 'superior' AL is a much more top-heavy league.
All the more glaring since the AL has only 14 teams to begin with... a greater percentage of the AL entrants are out of it early (usually by mid-June), whereas the NL always seems to treat the fans to a wild, wild wildcard race.
Just this year as an example: The AL is pretty much down to three teams in the wildcard hunt already, whereas in the NL SEVEN teams are separated by six games.

I've been saying the NL Central
is one of the toughest. The proof is in the pudding. Someone from this division always ends up in the Series of at least the League Championship.
