7-12, 4.57 |
just before the deadline, the pirates traded for matt morris --- what on god's green earth is dave littlefield thinking? to acquire morris, who's pricey and on the downside of his career, he gave up a speedy 26-year-old outfielder named rajai davis who possesses the qualities the cardinals should be trying to add. davis is young (26), fast (251 minor-league steals), and has very good on-base ability (a .375 career minor-league obp), plus he can play centerfield. where were the cardinals on this guy? i hate to knock morris, who i love dearly as a baseball player and a competitor, but we couldn't top that offer? littlefield probably asked for anthony reyes. . . .
morris has an era of 8.48 over the last month and 4.57 over the last 4 years, one point worse than steve trachsel. but that's still a full run better than the cards' scintillating new pitcher, joel piniero, who has logged a 5.56 era since the beginning of the 2004 season. that's 2d-worst among all major-league pitchers who've thrown 500 innings over that span --- only casey fossum was worse. eric milton, mark redman, and ramon ortiz have all outpitched this guy; kyle lohse, jeff weaver, brett tomko, and odalis perez have outpitched him by a lot. . . . i didn't rag on the cardinals when they passed on the high-dollar free-agents last winter because i thought they were committing themselves to player development. todd wellemeyer and joel piniero are not the type of players i thought they intended to develop.
neither is matt morris, for that matter. it woulda been fun to have him back, and lord knows the cardinals could use a healthy veteran in the rotation in the short term. but long term? if st louis had a player like rajai davis in the system and gave him up to acquire a player like mattymo, i'd scream bloody murder.
before i leave the subject of the trade deadline: i gotta wonder whether the cardinals made an offer on wilson betemit, who got traded for scott proctor, a so-so middle reliever. proctor has not commanded much trust in the yankee bullpen this year, getting used almost exclusively before the 8th inning and/or when the yankees are trailing or are way, way ahead. if i were the dodgers, i'd much rather have acquired former closer troy percival; think he was made available? . . . . . it's a shame the cardinals' most tradeable players, their late-inning relievers, were all off-limits for this reason or that. the club might well very have picked up a useful piece or two for 2008.
don't get mad if chris duncan sits tonight; i'd sit him too against paul maholm, who has held left-handed batters to a .209 / .255 / .314 line in 2007. right-handers are pounding him to the tune of .295 / .347 / .452. the outfield should be ludwick, taguchi, and en'cion left to right. maholm has posted a 3.80 era since june 1 (10 starts), mainly by cutting his home run rate; he yielded 1.6 hr per 9 innings in the first two months of the year, just 0.7 hr/9 since then. his h/9, k/9, and bb/9 haven't changed much.

Matt Leach announces the rotation

Maroth and Thompson to the pen. Could be called upon if Pineiro isn't ready.
Will Seabol be starting at 3rd for us tonight? :D

Everything is relative
Reyes, 1-10, ERA 6.11;
Wells, 4-13, ERA 5.72;
and the new guy, Pineiro, 1-1, ERA 5.03.
Then I realized, Pineiro is a BIG upgrade over what Maroth has done for us: Maroth, 0-4, ERA 9.20
WOO-HOO, light at the end of the tunnel.

Not only that LB...
I've been poking around Pirates' blogs to find some explanation... The only one I've found is that Gorzelanny and Snell need a good role model.

Littlefield is on the Pirates pre-game
"Performance is first and foremost, you never want to get away from that but Morris is a proven winner and a guy who can teach our young corp to how to win. [...] It is something similiar to what we did with Jeff Suppan a few years ago, he helped mentor our pitchers. But performance is still key."
They traded Suppan on this day in 2003. He was there for half a season with his 73-78 career record. He helped turn these young pups into superstars: Kip Wells, Jeff D'Amico, Josh Fogg, Kris Benson, Oliver Perez.
I'm sure it all makes sense to him.

i think you're selling rajai davis short, danup
davis's on-base ability has been much better than schumaker's throughout the minors, and when you add the base-stealing there's no comparison between the two. PECOTA projects davis to roughly a .340 obp for the next five years (vs .315 for schumaker). let's see --- a .340 obp; top-shelf speed; good defense; still in his mid-20s; making the minimum --- i don't care if he slugs .380, i'd take a player like that. he'd give the cardinals a number of qualities (speed, youth) they currently lack.
you can't say that about schumaker, and you certainly can't say it of matt morris.
Yeah...
Even Matty Mo for absolutely nothing is lopsided in favor of nothing b/c of the contract.
To be fair...
There is a .45 point difference in their minor league OPS. Davis is much more dangerous on the base paths as well.
Maybe he is just a 4th OFer, but the Giants did well to pawn off Morris' contract and get even that in return.
by bobbyballgame1 on Jul 31, 2007 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Morris's contract
Context???
He is the highest paid player on the Pirates team.
Besides, market value doesn't mean much when you can't get anyone out after you reach 85 or so innings for the year.
They did well to rid themselves of Morris...regardless of the return.

Is he better???
As bad as Piniero is...an ERA of around 5 probably isn't out of the question and he comes at a fraction of the cost with no commitment in '08.

Compare him to Braden Looper
I spent some time trying to figure out whether or not Looper would be a valuable starter next year so I compared him to every other starter in the big leagues by GB%, HR/9, BB/9, and K/9. Guess who was most similar to Looper -- Matt Morris -- they're almost identical in every way. And Morris earns $3.5M more next year.
He's a solidly below average pitcher...
Does David Eckstein need glasses?

The Matt Morris trade has another wrinkle
Percival remains partly because the Cardinals failed to acquire starter Matt Morris.
Such a move would have forced Pineiro to the bullpen and created overcrowding on the pen's right side. As is, Percival has made three two-inning appearances since July 21.
Joe Strauss
Breaking it down further
The Giants were looking for a team to take some of their high-salaried players, and the Pirates will pick up the remainder of Morris' $10,037,283 contract for this season. He is due $9.5 million for next season, plus a $2 million payment at the end of the season.
"Almost at the 11th hour we were talking to two other teams I would consider competitors in the playoff situation. Pittsburgh stepped up, not only to take on the player as is -- meaning the contract -- but the potential return," in Davis, Sabean said.
One of the two teams were the Cardinals.
Then, that deal was interconnected with this one:
They did not find a suitable prospect to lead them to part with the former Los Angeles Angels closer, who signed as a free agent May 26.
Percival remains partly because the Cardinals failed to acquire starter Matt Morris.
Such a move would have forced Pineiro to the bullpen and created overcrowding on the pen's right side. As is, Percival has made three two-inning appearances since July 21.
So, let me get this straight: The Cardinals would have moved Percival for a prospect, put Peniero into the 6th inning/mopup role and Matt Morris would have started Saturday. Instead, now Peniero will start Saturday, Percival stays where he is and the Pirates acquire a pitcher they have no use for.
Dave Littlefield is a genius! He took on all the contract and gave them a player when they felt they couldn't get EITHER.

gives you a new appreciation
Haven't you been paying attention
Not really......why in the hell
So your honest contention
If they were that "blinded by that player", he'd be starting in Washington this weekend for the Cardinals rather than passing the time until next July when he might be traded to a contender.
Reading one sardonic post after another is getting tough to take!
A few things
2-Morris' words on his way out of SF show that he was very disgruntled being there. Perhaps that was why he was getting worse by the day, perhaps he just plain sucks, who knows.
3-Morris has logged 136.2 innings in 21 starts (6+ ip/start). The Cardinals have NO pitcher on their roster that has logged that many innings or really averages that many per start. His 4.35 ERA is the lowest for any Cardinals starter not named Todd Wellemeyer.
I agree, what Pittsburgh gave up for Matty Mo was ridiculous and no one should pay him THAT contract. However, Morris on the Cardinals would certainly be better than our current 5.
The rotation would be:
Wainwright
Looper
Morris
Reyes
Wells
Maroth and Thompson to the pen. That is, unless Reyes implodes again.

Our lack of getting a pitcher
I can't help but think that a Kason Gabbard type could be on our team right now. The Red Sox were looking for an outfielder and reliever. They ended up not getting Dye, but did get Gagne for Gabbard and more. We could've easily offered JuanEnc and Percival, BoSox would've gotten a better deal, Enc's contract would've been out the window, AND we would've had a pitcher come in that could (sadly) be the number 2 guy in this current rotation. Oh yeah, and he's young.
Geez, I know Walt's job is tough, but looking at how many deals we consistently miss out on despite having more to offer, is simply frustrating.
Look on the bright side

you mean we're only 27 days away
sweet cracker molasses i can't wait!!
Heh
Gabbard and prospects for Gagne? Davies for Dotel? Those stud prospects for Linebrink? Betemit for Proctor? Seriously, it makes me sick . . . this was a reliever's market, why the hell were we sitting back?
Oh well, let's hope for 5 straight. That'd be a nifty little accomplishment.
I love MattyMo
That said, I have to think that Walt is hoping to make a REAL move or two after the deadline. He has a history of such deals, and it gives him a chance to see if we actually remain in contention before pulling the trigger.
Or at least that's what I'll be telling myself over and over this week to keep from pulling my hair out...
Well, from the sound of things
