Game 102 Open Thread: July 31, 2007

wainwright

maholm

9-8, 4.45

7-12, 4.57

just before the deadline, the pirates traded for matt morris --- what on god's green earth is dave littlefield thinking? to acquire morris, who's pricey and on the downside of his career, he gave up a speedy 26-year-old outfielder named rajai davis who possesses the qualities the cardinals should be trying to add. davis is young (26), fast (251 minor-league steals), and has very good on-base ability (a .375 career minor-league obp), plus he can play centerfield. where were the cardinals on this guy? i hate to knock morris, who i love dearly as a baseball player and a competitor, but we couldn't top that offer? littlefield probably asked for anthony reyes. . . .

morris has an era of 8.48 over the last month and 4.57 over the last 4 years, one point worse than steve trachsel. but that's still a full run better than the cards' scintillating new pitcher, joel piniero, who has logged a 5.56 era since the beginning of the 2004 season. that's 2d-worst among all major-league pitchers who've thrown 500 innings over that span --- only casey fossum was worse. eric milton, mark redman, and ramon ortiz have all outpitched this guy; kyle lohse, jeff weaver, brett tomko, and odalis perez have outpitched him by a lot. . . . i didn't rag on the cardinals when they passed on the high-dollar free-agents last winter because i thought they were committing themselves to player development. todd wellemeyer and joel piniero are not the type of players i thought they intended to develop.

neither is matt morris, for that matter. it woulda been fun to have him back, and lord knows the cardinals could use a healthy veteran in the rotation in the short term. but long term? if st louis had a player like rajai davis in the system and gave him up to acquire a player like mattymo, i'd scream bloody murder.

before i leave the subject of the trade deadline: i gotta wonder whether the cardinals made an offer on wilson betemit, who got traded for scott proctor, a so-so middle reliever. proctor has not commanded much trust in the yankee bullpen this year, getting used almost exclusively before the 8th inning and/or when the yankees are trailing or are way, way ahead. if i were the dodgers, i'd much rather have acquired former closer troy percival; think he was made available? . . . . . it's a shame the cardinals' most tradeable players, their late-inning relievers, were all off-limits for this reason or that. the club might well very have picked up a useful piece or two for 2008.

don't get mad if chris duncan sits tonight; i'd sit him too against paul maholm, who has held left-handed batters to a .209 / .255 / .314 line in 2007. right-handers are pounding him to the tune of .295 / .347 / .452. the outfield should be ludwick, taguchi, and en'cion left to right. maholm has posted a 3.80 era since june 1 (10 starts), mainly by cutting his home run rate; he yielded 1.6 hr per 9 innings in the first two months of the year, just 0.7 hr/9 since then. his h/9, k/9, and bb/9 haven't changed much.

Matt Leach announces the rotation
Reyes Thursday
Wells Friday
Pineiro Saturday

Maroth and Thompson to the pen.  Could be called upon if Pineiro isn't ready.

Will Seabol be starting at 3rd for us tonight? :D

Ah, the hilarity of 2005.

Everything is relative
Looking at that rotation, I thought, what a murderer's row:
Reyes, 1-10, ERA 6.11;
Wells, 4-13, ERA 5.72;
and the new guy, Pineiro, 1-1, ERA 5.03.

Then I realized, Pineiro is a BIG upgrade over  what Maroth has done for us: Maroth, 0-4, ERA 9.20

WOO-HOO, light at the end of the tunnel.

Keep in mind that he's a career AL pitcher.  Maybe the NL will be kinder to his ERA.

Not only that LB...
but the Pirates took on every last cent of the $10 million plus that Morris is owed.

I've been poking around Pirates' blogs to find some explanation... The only one I've found is that Gorzelanny and Snell need a good role model.

Uh, what?

I question many Cardinal front office decisions, but I can usually see what they're getting at, even when I disagree.

The Pirates organization, on the other hand,  completely baffles me. If they have a strategy, I can't figure it out.

They don't
Littlefield is easily the worst GM in baseball.  Taking on Matt Morris' $9 M salary for next year when it's going to be a struggle just to reach .500 is absurd.  It strikes me as the kind of move a GM makes out of desperation to save his job.  It shouldn't work.

by chuckb on Jul 31, 2007 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think I would commit suicide of I was a
Pirate fan....bad drafts, bad trades, bad free agent signings, and they have a lot of good pitchers that can't win because they don't score runs or play good defense.  It's truly pitiful.

by jillsinmo on Aug 1, 2007 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Morris' numbers at PNC
Maybe Littlefield was looking at those.  Just heard them on local radio.  Something like 6-0, 2.2 ERA in 56 innings, 35 K against 6 walks or something.  So Matty Mo pitches well at PNC.

What Littlefield may have failed to realize is that they came against his awful baseball club.

How does this guy still have a job?

over Thompson?  I'm doubtful.  Perhaps they figure that Thompson is more valuable as the mopup guy for Pineiro, Wells and Reyes when they implode in the 4th inning.

Littlefield is on the Pirates pre-game
spinning this Morris deal.

"Performance is first and foremost, you never want to get away from that but Morris is a proven winner and a guy who can teach our young corp to how to win.  [...] It is something similiar to what we did with Jeff Suppan a few years ago, he helped mentor our pitchers.  But performance is still key."

They traded Suppan on this day in 2003.  He was there for half a season with his 73-78 career record.  He helped turn these young pups into superstars: Kip Wells, Jeff D'Amico, Josh Fogg,  Kris Benson, Oliver Perez.

I'm sure it all makes sense to him.

It's not so much about benching Duncan, so much as starting Ludwick. He simply does not hit lefties, even though he's right handed.

Jocketty definitely should have done (aside from passing on Pineiro): trade Eckstein. The guy isn't going to be offered arbitration, he's going to walk for nothing, and we lose zilch by going with Ryan.

I disagree
he will be offered arbitration.  The reason why is that it would end up only being a 1 year contract.  The concern about Eckstein is signing him to a 3 year contract but, considering we have no obvious replacement for him at SS, he will be offered arbitration hoping he gets a 2 or 3 year offer somewhere else.  And, if not, he's our SS for 1 more year.

Deal makes no sense period
Matt Morris isn't a good fit on the Pirates, but I've gotta disagree about Rajai Davis being a useful player--the guy is Skip Schumaker with the ability to steal bases, which is still a fourth outfielder at best. His career minor league slugging percentage is .407.

The Cardinals should've offered Skippy and some other shiny trinket.

by DanUpBaby on Jul 31, 2007 7:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he'd be useful.

:D

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 31, 2007 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he'd be a great
leadoff hitter for Memphis, certainly. Schumaker's problem is not an inability to take the extra base, it's an inability to hit for them.

by DanUpBaby on Jul 31, 2007 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think you're selling rajai davis short, danup
to dismiss him as a schumaker clone. davis is a solid 4th outfielder with everyday-player upside; schumaker's upside is as a 4th outfielder. he has no chance to be an everyday player.

davis's on-base ability has been much better than schumaker's throughout the minors, and when you add the base-stealing there's no comparison between the two. PECOTA projects davis to roughly a .340 obp for the next five years (vs .315 for schumaker). let's see --- a .340 obp; top-shelf speed; good defense; still in his mid-20s; making the minimum --- i don't care if he slugs .380, i'd take a player like that. he'd give the cardinals a number of qualities (speed, youth) they currently lack.

you can't say that about schumaker, and you certainly can't say it of matt morris.

by lboros on Aug 1, 2007 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...
but his BB% is a few clicks higher. Coupled with the speed, that makes a significant difference.

Even Matty Mo for absolutely nothing is lopsided in favor of nothing b/c of the contract.

by guayzimi on Jul 31, 2007 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair...
While I agree that Davis is no great shakes, he looks to be better than Skippy.

There is a .45 point difference in their minor league OPS.  Davis is much more dangerous on the base paths as well.

Maybe he is just a 4th OFer, but the Giants did well to pawn off Morris' contract and get even that in return.

Context???
Of the market or for the Pirates?

He is the highest paid player on the Pirates team.

Besides, market value doesn't mean much when you can't get anyone out after you reach 85 or so innings for the year.

They did well to rid themselves of Morris...regardless of the return.

I think I said
it makes no sense for the Pirates, but if the Cardinals want to pretend they're still in contention they'd be well-served to get somebody better than Joel Pineiro. And if the price for that is a guy who is probably not going to contribute at the major league level, whose "breakout" season has come as a 26-year-old in AAA with an OPS just over .850, it would make sense to look into it.

by DanUpBaby on Jul 31, 2007 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is he better???
I mean that's very debateable.  Like I said...Morris' ERA for the second half is over 8 and opponents are hitting nearly .400 off of him.  Also,  he hasn't had a second half ERA under 5.00 since '03.  That's a trend my friend.  The guy loses the ability to get guys out once he reaches 85-90 innings and it's been that way for quite awhile.

As bad as Piniero is...an ERA of around 5 probably isn't out of the question and he comes at a fraction of the cost with no commitment in '08.

Pitch to swing and misses...not contact. I've never heard of a "seeing eye K"

Compare him to Braden Looper
who you just said we should have dumped for whatever we could get for him.  Looper's salary is just more than 1/2 of Morris' and their performance this year is almost identical.

I spent some time trying to figure out whether or not Looper would be a valuable starter next year so I compared him to every other starter in the big leagues by GB%, HR/9, BB/9, and K/9.  Guess who was most similar to Looper -- Matt Morris -- they're almost identical in every way.  And Morris earns $3.5M more next year.

Over the last week or so, my family has been noticing that he stands perfectly still when the ball is hit and doesn't begin to move until it is almost past the pitcher's mound.

I've noticed this very thing, too
the few times I have watched him on TV.  David's first movement of his feet is dwindling down to non-existent... and it always seemed to me that one of the ways he compensated for his basically below average skills as an SS was that he seemed to anticipate well (a'la' Edmonds in HIS best days).
If that instinct/skill is truly dwindling, then Eck is moving down on the 'below average' list for defensive SS.

Devils Advocate on Morris
Is it possible that $9.5M (what Matty Mo is owed next year) is the going rate for a league average pitcher who can munch innings?  Despite Morris' struggles of late, his ERA+ is 99. Now I never can remember if ERA+ is park factor adjusted, but if it is, that would be the 2nd best among the starters (behind Todd Wellemeyer) with 30 more IP than Wainwright (the Cards' IP leader).  There's value in that.

Park Factors And Morris
One other thing to consider: according to baseball-reference, AT&T's park factor this season is more batter-friendly than Busch's (100 to 98).  I'm not a big believer in one-year PFs, but there you go.

by South Side Cards Fan on Jul 31, 2007 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is park adjusted...
thing with Morris is that he's trending downward so don't bet on average performance from here on out. He was below average last year, and he's been wretched for the past two months. Also, there's a buyout for '09 which ups his price tag by $1 million.
Ease LaDunketty out gently, thank him profusely, and... Hire Antonetti!!!

Have no idea what they were doing, exactly, I guess hit and run (since it was 2 outs and 2 strikes with Miles up, they figured he'd either foul or strike out or hit, not take a ball), but they pitched out and got him.

I so much agree:
I'm not over-stating it to say that finding THIS viva site saved my season.  For about a year I was a semi-regular on the basic Cards fan forum on MLB.com.
Eventually I got really upset and disgusted... the main reason being too much personal attacking (as opposed to arguing about the IDEAS put forth).
It's fine to disagree and have contrary opinions, but to be made fun of, and called names, in the process... I confess got under my skin.

The people who post HERE are better informed to begin with, but more importantly, to me, they have manners!

by CurtFlood on Jul 31, 2007 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fan forums
on MLB.com can be vile.  For one thing, the boards are over-run with trolls and that leads to the junior-high type stuff. And very little actual discourse takes place.  P-D boards are often a cesspool as well.  Larry enforces his rules on his blog and we (usually) live in peace and harmony.

With all
the balls that have gotten past our defenders for base hits lately, it is good to see Miles positioned to catch that and get the out.  That has been bothering me lately - why are so many balls getting through?  Is it the positioning of our defense?  Any thoughts?

Duncan at his finest...
Pitch to contact.  It will keep your pitch count down...or will it?
Pitch to swing and misses...not contact. I've never heard of a "seeing eye K"

by bobbyballgame1 on Jul 31, 2007 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You must have a better than average defense if you
are going to ask your pitchers to throw it in there and just let them hit it.  You are also asking pitchers to have pinpoint control on every pitch.  That ain't even going to happen--even with Johan.  We don't have above average fielders in a lot of positions; we actually have below average fielders.  I see the whole paradigm as part ot the problem.  More baserunners equals more runs.  We have seen it even in well pitched games.....go for a double play, get a single up the middle instead, your run scores.

by jillsinmo on Aug 1, 2007 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well,
I will say that, lately, the defense seems to be playing shifted, one way or the other, as if every hitter is going to pull the ball, and a bunch of grounders are just heading right up the middle.

This is also what happens when your middle infielders have zero range.  There's just not a whole lot of groundballs that scrappiness has a positive effect on.

Do you hear that? That's the sound of my dreams being crushed.

by the red baron on Jul 31, 2007 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is probably
the case. During some of the blow-out games, I've been listening on XM and it seems like the radio guys just keep saying "and it drops in for a base hit" time after time.  Since I can't see what is happening (duh), I'm thinking, "What's up?  Do we have no defenders on the field?"  So that was why I was asking if anyone had any thoughts on the matter.

by cardsgirl95 on Jul 31, 2007 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Two things...
The whole pitch to contact theory, which results in a lot of ground balls. But at the same time, the Cardinals don't have a very good infield defense. Rolen & Pujols are good. But Miles is terrible and Eckstein isn't much better these days (his range is pretty bad).  Miles did make a nice play, but he was also rather lucky, since he was moving to cover 2b and that's right where the ball was.

i actually just looked that up
in his slight defense, the probability of scoring at least one run is something like this:

Man on 2nd, none out: 0.619
Man on 3rd, one out: 0.693

But that's so close that it would depend on what hitters are coming up as far as which is the better move. But in this case, it obviously worked out.

Especially when they're playing the Cubs.  It's the Mets/Brewers game that has me torn, because I hate the Mets, and aside from the Cardinals, I'd probably rather see the Brewers win the Central, especially not the Cubs.

Nothing against Pittsburgh, but for my .02, the Matt Morris trade says all you need to know about that franchise. I think this year will make 27 losing seasons out of the last 35.

Ugh.

Well ,
Brew Crew pulls it off on a two run homer by Jenkins in the 13th.  But, man, both teams burned through alot of pitchers.  By the way, MLB.tv was using the SNY feed and their guys just said that the sell-out crowd was disappointed because "they came to see Glavine get his 300th win".  Umm, I don't think that the majority of fans at Miller Park were there to see the Mets win under any circumstances.  Do people in NYC really believe that the Midwest only shows up at baseball games if a NY team is in town?  Or that they would root for the Easterns to beat their hometown team?

The Matt Morris trade has another wrinkle
Percival remains partly because the Cardinals failed to acquire starter Matt Morris.

Such a move would have forced Pineiro to the bullpen and created overcrowding on the pen's right side. As is, Percival has made three two-inning appearances since July 21.

Breaking it down further

The Giants were looking for a team to take some of their high-salaried players, and the Pirates will pick up the remainder of Morris' $10,037,283 contract for this season. He is due $9.5 million for next season, plus a $2 million payment at the end of the season.

"Almost at the 11th hour we were talking to two other teams I would consider competitors in the playoff situation. Pittsburgh stepped up, not only to take on the player as is -- meaning the contract -- but the potential return," in Davis, Sabean said.

One of the two teams were the Cardinals.

Then, that deal was interconnected with this one:
They did not find a suitable prospect to lead them to part with the former Los Angeles Angels closer, who signed as a free agent May 26.

Percival remains partly because the Cardinals failed to acquire starter Matt Morris.

Such a move would have forced Pineiro to the bullpen and created overcrowding on the pen's right side. As is, Percival has made three two-inning appearances since July 21.

So, let me get this straight: The Cardinals would have moved Percival for a prospect, put Peniero into the 6th inning/mopup role and Matt Morris would have started Saturday.  Instead, now Peniero will start Saturday, Percival stays where he is and the Pirates acquire a pitcher they have no use for.

Dave Littlefield is a genius!  He took on all the contract and gave them a player when they felt they couldn't get EITHER.
