What Will You Miss in October?

It's July 20th and the St Louis Baseball Cardinals are 9.5 games back from the front running Brewers and six games back of the second place Northsiders. Their two all star starting pitchers are being paid not to play,  the all star short stops deal with the devil appears to have run out, the all star center fielder is still leading the league in grimacing, but not much else, and the all star third baseman apparently has a small rodent living in his shoulder. The team right now is pretty much Albert Pujols, Chris Duncan, and a bullpen.

As much as it pains me to say it -- and as much as I can logically argue against it in my head (they only need to make up one game a week for the rest of the year!) -- for just the second time in the last eight years, the Cardinals will not be playing baseball this October.

It seems as if October baseball is a bit of an institution in St Louis by now like toasted ravioli, miss pronouncing the word "forty", and having a terrible public transportation system. I for one am particularly spoiled, every year since I moved to St Louis the Perfectos have played baseball in the crisp autumn air. I've gotten used to it and I bet you have as well. So as I began pondering what in the world I will do with myself this October w/out having baseball to distract me (focus on my career? Doubtful. Help plan that wedding of mine in November? Maybe. Play with legos? Probably, yes.), I started to think of all of the things I am going to miss about watching the home nine battle it out in the post season.

I thought of writing out a top ten list of sorts, but that would require structure and I tend to frown on structure unless it's abstract or keeping my head dry at night, so I'm just going to let 'er rip:

I'm going to miss the NLDS day game. It doesn't have the natural tension that the night games in the NLCS or the World Series have, but it has a different type of magic. A sense of joy mixed with a little mischievous adventure; skipping work to head to the ballpark, sitting in the sun, having a beer at one in the afternoon, Look! Bunting! It's like opening day all over again, it seems so familiar but is still new.

I'll miss waking up in the morning with sore hands and a hoarse throat and feeling great.

Listening to "The Heat is On" (and making the prerequisite "The H... is O!" jokes) on the way to the game. Hopefully listening to "Celebration" later on.

I'll miss getting a new playoff sweatshirt; I had gotten a new one three years straight now and my feelings about them run strangely parallel to each year's team: The '04 one is still comfortable and has a real classic look, the '05 one was a bit of a let down, and the '06 was easily the most comfortable one when I first wore it, but it has aged terribly.

Champagne.

Hi fives and hugs. Fist pumps.

Having like 18 pages worth of Cardinals article to pour through in the morning paper.

Strangely, I'll miss those few anxiety filled hours leading up to a big game. The pacing, the tongue chewing, the nervous habits which help pass the time.

A really, really excited Mike Shannon on the radio.

That mix of alcohol and adrenaline that makes doing things like climbing the Musial statue seem like a good idea.

Playoff beards.

I'll miss a well turned double play, a double down the line, a pinch hitter coming through in a tight spot.

Being pleasently surprised (and constantly amazed) by human achievement.

I'll miss Cardinals baseball.

And goosebumps.

So, that's what I'll miss. That's my list. What's on yours?

Maybe in the end...
seasons like this will make us appreciate more that magical run the next time it happens.

After all, we'd hate to become spoiled Yankees/Sox fans who piss and moan if their team isn't in the WS.

But I'll definitely miss those things as well.

You
Labor Day weekend the NFL will be up and running. College Football too. So GO SU Orange and Go Philly Eagles!

Oh that's right there might be a good baseball game or two to watch! Then bring on the Winter Meetings.

i'll miss this ---
quoting you: "anxiety filled hours leading up to a big game. The pacing, the tongue chewing, the nervous habits which help pass the time."

and the tense gut during the game; the intense focus on every pitch (whew, he got away with one . . .  slider's biting tonight . . . . c'mon blue, get it right . . . . .)

I cant wait until Hockey season
Im predicting a Blues playoff run!!!!

by Calhoun on Jul 20, 2007 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

Go Blues!
I can't wait for the season. Finally have a good farm system filled with great prospects. Oh, and that one guy... Paul somethingoranother? Lets hope Legacy stays healthy and Murray's added fire to the team doesnt run out. Next few years should be good.

I'm definely not used to not having a Blues playoff run. The offseason is soooo long without one.

Give Jose a chance!

Here in Western PA
We're excited about another year of Sid the Kid and Evgeni Malkin. Should be a fun year of hockey.

I'll miss the feeling
that nothing else that happens that day is even remotely important.

Most answers given would be 'uh huh, yeah, ok, whatever'.

Gotta side with
Hardcore on this one - nothing else is even remotely as important that day.  Also, I will miss the day games.  Post-season play always involves a few of those (unless you are playing a NY team and then it is night games).

That about covers it....
Though, I am hoping for the Brewers playoff run so I can hopefully score tickets to those games and return to Wisconsin to visit.  I think that will be one hell of a party.  Scratch that, I KNOW that will be one hell of a party.

I will miss when they throw that first pitch its like a new beginning a new adventure and you never can tell what will happen next.

I'll miss sticking it to
all my Cub supporting friends.

And I'll miss skipping classes to watch the games.

Definately going to miss the playoff beard
It sucks, because October is really the only month of the year that I'm actually motivated enough to put energy into a blog. I pay a year's worth of hosting fees for myplayoffbeard.com and only get a few weeks of relevant updating. Now it's going to be a minimum of two years between official beards. Tragic.

I have been thinking of alternatives, though. Like maybe I could switch to "Streak beards" during the regular season. (I keep the beard alive during winning streaks, whatever those are, and shave every day the Cardinals lose.) Or maybe I'll grow a memorial beard this October to honor the first anniversary of the Cardinal's last championship.

Very nice post, AlxFritz.

Love your sentence
of links, Alx.  Be sure, everybody, to click on each word and note what word each goes with.  And savor.

I'll miss that day NLDS game too -- in my case finding a bar to have lunch and a few beers at and watch it.  Last year in Boston a San Diego fan was solo at another table, doing the same thing as I, and we went from trading pre-game witticisms and facts to, around the time Piazza missed that foul pop-up, me doing a lot of silent grinning.  Not a shit-talker, I -- though when Belliard made that great run-saving play at second (I think), I let out a whoop for sure.  The San Diego guy left early.

ill miss the day game too
even though i can't skip classes and go have a beer (skipping class gets you into deep shit in high school). but the fun part was doing whatever humanly possible to find out what was going on during the game. whether it was your phone, your teacher, your radio, or your teacher's computer, you found a way to see what's going on. it's kind of like the NCAA tournament. hell, some of the teachers even say screw it and let us watch the game.

I would have missed that and you are right - it was enjoyable.

the day game & the intensity of every pitch...
I'll definitely miss those.

Thanks Alxfritz for the links to the pictures, too -- some great memories of great performances. Here's one more:

Carp in WS game 3

I'm trying to pick myself up by remembering all the great performances Carp has given us -- and Game 3 against the Tigers was the topper.

Oddly enough
I will miss the FOX Playoff baseball music.  The last seven years that music has gone so well with sitting down on a crisp October night with a lump in my throat and a turn in my stomach knowing I'm about to watch the boys in red, and oddly enough, thinking "please guys, don't blow it again this year".....until last year, that is!

i liked that music too
until they went and effed it up this year. what is with networks effing with awesome music from sports? first it was CBS changing their AWESOME college basketball music. then ABC dropped hockey. and then FOX went and messed this up.

It's tough to listen to that music and not think
of two moments:  Pujols HR off of Lidge and Edmonds HR in the 2004 NLCS.

I'll miss the summer sun
I'll miss having Cardinal baseball to talk about.

I'll miss meeting up with friends I rarely see to catch each and every playoff game.

The postseason isn't completely out of reach, though! All we'll need is for our entire starting rotation to allow runs at a rate of about 3.09 runs per nine! (Shameless plug)

You hit the nail on the head.

I'll mis all those things.

Plus, watching the games with my son.  2 years old, 1 World Series, 2 Opening Days.  And he loves to say "Pujols".  Comes out "poo hole" and he cracks himself up every time.

hanging on every pitch
all the nervous habits...driving my wife crazy with it all. she says i'm already fading back into winter me. and the playoff beard, definetly.

That first NLDS Game
There is nothing like that first game.  It doesn't matter if you won 105 games and are the favorite or 83 games and declared DOA.  At that point everyone has the same chance to make a run, but everyone also has just as good of a chance to go on a cold streak and go home after 3 games.

That first game always makes you feel much better or makes you panic.  It's opening day all over again.

Jimmy steps in to lead off the bottom half of the inning... with nobody on base... It could happen... just not tonight.

by Hollywood15 on Jul 20, 2007 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly...
I'd rather miss the playoffs entirely than watch them fall short of the World Series again.

I mean - I love all the things described above - but when baseball takes your life over for weeks on end every October, you inevitably miss out on other good shit. When we were chasing that elusive championship (6 of the last 7 years), I couldn't focus on anything that wasn't Cardinals related.

I definitely won't miss dropping all that bank on postseason tickets. This year, I'll be spending that money on concert related travels (e.g. Arcade Fire at Red Rocks on 9/15).

I live in central Illinois, where loyalties are divided evenly between good and bad.

Last year I wrote about how, the day of Game 7 of the NLCS, I saw so much Cardinals gear on my various errands that day. Awesome.

Thanks, Fritz, for conjuring up good memories.

everything
the bunting on the walls, seeing people obviously playing hookey from work, seeing a father and son haggle with a scalper to get in the house, seeing scalpers getting arrested, justifying to my friends and family why im spending hundreds of dollars that i dont have with a huge smile of anticipation on my face, cardinal hall of famers throwing out first pitches, overpriced programs that ill never open, wearing the same clothes and going in the same gate and rubbing the same statue for good luck, the fact that i can still buy a hot dog at busch and those lemmings in chicago cant buy one at wrigley, and last but certainly not least the anxiety/excitement/nervousness of watching my favorite team in my favorite sport play on the most important stage
baseball is like church. many attend but few understand....wes westrum, catcher

call me crazy
but I'm actually going to miss all the articles from jerks like kieth law telling us how bad we are and how we don't deserve to be there.

Also, watching the cardinals beat the padres in san diego.  I LOVE that road trip, and this'll be my last October in California...

Panic!!!
