Reyes might be recalled

For the Brewers series next week.

Per Joe Strauss:
"La Russa said Adam Wainwright and Braden Looper are locked in for starts on Wednesday and Thursday. He will re-evaluate who to use for Friday's series opener and a day-night doubleheader Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers. La Russa said it is possible Anthony Reyes would be recalled from Memphis to handle one of the three games."

Star-divide

I don't see how he CAN'T be recalled.  Even if Wellemeyer were able to be brought back and pitch, no way Maroth should take the mound again before Reyes does.

I'm not a Reyes cheerleader in the least, but at this point we've gotta stick with the kid.

That makes a ton of sense
I was trying to figure out who would pitch in the other game of the double-header next Saturday. One of those games will probably be Maroth's next start and using Reyes in the other game is a much better idea than using the bullpen for nine innings (plus however many Maroth leaves for 'em).

Now that Carp is injured
There's no reason not to let him finish out the year.
On with the youth movement!

okay
unless we trade for someone better, but I don't like / see that happening.

i agree...
... let the kid finish out the season. let him and Thompson duke it out for a rotation spot next year. or whatever.

hopfully we spend in the offseason before that
happens

I was for
trading Reyes for Quentin the other day, but now I think we need to let the kid pitch. Duncan should hand him a ball and said "go for it kid."

Sigh........
He's never going to be the kind of pitcher they think he needs to be.  I think he should have remained here all along, and I hate the constant tug of war with him.  Maybe he'll pitch a gem that will help up his trade value, so they can shed him from the system.  I just don't see him being able to flourish under LaDunc.

ugh
just when we thought this circus was over till september.

I'll go start the Memphis shuttle . . . . .

There's really not much choice
but to call Anthony up.  Even if Wellemeyer is ready to go, unless Maroth starts Tuesday in the Cubs opener, they'll still need another starter for Saturday.

by ArkansasTravs on Jul 20, 2007 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

Well, they could take a real risk and give the
ball to Smith, Keisler, Parisi or Hawksworth.  It's obvious they don't like Reyes as a pitcher for this team....so leave him there, and if they are coming back next year, do the right thing and trade him.  And that hurts me to say that because I think Anthony might be something special, and I'd like him to do it here, but I just don't see it.....

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Figure it out.
Let's get a starting rotation put together.  I mean lets get five guys who start games, and every other picture on the team, and Scott Spez, pitch after them.  I mean this season is going down fast so lets but five guys together.  Lets just say Maroth, Loop, Wainer, Thompson, and Reyes.  Sorry, but Kip Wells just needs to lay down and be done.  If you think this season is saveable, then we need consitance. Then we need the five starters again.  Sorry that this is a little long for a comment.
Save the Kipper don't make him go back out there.

by gibbyfan on Jul 20, 2007 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

After Wells' last performance?
You have to get him back out there. And his numbers this year are still better than Reyes' numbers.

by willievinceterry on Jul 20, 2007 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Wells has much better stuff than Maroth
Since they both have confidence issues it seems like we should send the one out with more natural talent and a recent big win under his belt.  Maroth is just entering into a rut; hopefully Wells is finding his way out.  At least I think its a more promising bet.

by nycardfan on Jul 20, 2007 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't get the sense that Maroth is having
confidence issues; he's having a real problem with location.  Too many pitches in the hitting zone.  His fastball isn't good enough to just fire one in there either.  The homeruns are alarming....and they have been hitting him hard.  He may just need time to adjust, but he's got to do something to get deeper into games.

by jillsinmo on Jul 21, 2007 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Reyes, Maroth, and Thompson
should take a turn in the rotation every 5th day.  They should be regulars in the rotation...period.  We have to find out if any/all of these 3 can help us in the rotation for next year and they've got probably 10 starts left to see if they warrant being in the rotation next year.

There is no reason to let Reyes continue to pitch in AAA, nor is there a reason to let Thompson pitch out of the pen (we already know he can do that), nor is there a reason to DFA Maroth, as I've read suggested.  We need to be able to evaluate these 3 starters for next year and now is the time to do it.

by chuckb on Jul 20, 2007 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

As bad as Reyes has been at times
Wainwright
Looper
Wells/Maroth
Reyes
Thompson

should be our starting rotation the rest of the way out, until Mulder gets back.

Who knows, maybe they can string together a 10 game winning streak over this next week :D

Of course I think Reyes should be
here; it's obvious from all of Laduncetty's comments in the press, that he's not the kind of pitcher they want to work with.  I want him to be successful, but he just doesn't throw the kind of pitches they want their pitchers to throw.  Be done with it all ready......if LaDunc is not coming back, just keep him in Memphis until Sept. and let the new pitching coach have a whack at him. If they are coming back, let him burnish his credentials for a trade in the off season.......they've already made it clear they would rather work with Wells and Wellemeyer.  They should just quit jerking Anthony around--I can see him even have a good outing and getting sent right back down.....and if he has a bad outing.....it ain't worth the risk.....

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Welleymeyer seems to have impressed
TLR and Duncan more than Reyes this year (at least he had before going on the DL).  If TLR was truthful in saying that taking Welleymeyer out of the rotation to make room for Wells was the hardest (or one of the hardest) decsions he's made all year, I'd expect to see him play a role now that there is a vacancy.

I know that's your ideal list.  But TLR and Duncan have heaped praise on Welly as having great natural gifts and for working his tail off.  It would seem stange if they didn't go back to him once he came off the DL and continue "developing" him as a starter, given their earlier comments.

by nycardfan on Jul 20, 2007 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

I hope you don't think that mean the other
pitchers don't "bust their tail off."  You won't even make your high school team if you don't bust your tail.  Arm, leg, strength, aerobic fitness, bullpen sessions year round, fine tuning, learning, re-learning is something pitchers do all year long.

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I think everyone's probably busting
their tails, but for some reason, TLR and Duncan have taken a shine to Welleymeyer.  I haven't watched him much so i don't have any real opinion of him.  I'm just saying they seem partial to him and so they'll probably find a spot with the new rotation problems.

by nycardfan on Jul 20, 2007 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, by all means. if they " LIKE "
Wellemeyer the best he should be in the rotation.  I always want them to make their judgement on who they "like" the best.  I guess that means they play favorites....

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

well i think they do
I thought they did that with Thompson at the beginning of the year (worked against him) and of course many think they've jerked Reyes around too much.  Maybe we all do that but it can be frustrating if you don't think they are giving a guy a fair shot.  Oh well...

by nycardfan on Jul 21, 2007 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

They sure did do it to Thompson too
You are not supposed to judge by who you "like" the best; you should judge by who you think is the "best"

by jillsinmo on Jul 21, 2007 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...
and this whole "competition" talk when they already have predetermined who they want to pitch or play is irritating.

by nycardfan on Jul 21, 2007 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

good to have reyes back up
hopefully they just let him pitch. someone posted last week about how cole hamels struggled last year, but he worked through it. i wish the cardinals would take the same approach with reyes rather than messing with him after every start.
hit em where they aint

by thefordhamflash on Jul 20, 2007 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

I know Reyes is a sensitive issue
but someone else made it clear in that conversation that Coles struggled more like Wainwright than Reyes.  I don't know whose fault that is--Reyes, Duncan, lack of run support, etc.  But Coles was up and down early and then evened out.  He never was in an extended down-turn.

by nycardfan on Jul 20, 2007 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean like the game he pitched
Right before his last demotion?

That looked like he was turing the corner.  But unlike wells and wellemeyer when Reyes has a good start "he got lucky".  When Wells gets hammered in the 1st "He made good pitches but they just hit them"

by DriverZn on Jul 20, 2007 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep...that New York game was
exactly what they said they wanted from him, and he didn't fold when he started the 5th with 2 on and no outs.  He worked out of his own jam--71 pitches, 5 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs, then the rain came.  And still, they said they wanted Wells and Wellemeyer in the rotation.  No, I hope they don't bring him UNLESS they intend to keep him here and help him work out his issues.  It's just hurting his development.

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I am torn on this one
I don't want to seem him up here for one start then sent right back down.

I want to see the team do well in 2008.  At this point I have given up on this year.

Personally I think we need about a 5 game losing streek to convince mgt that we are not in a race anymore this season.  Then they can go into planning for 08 while we have time left.

by DriverZn on Jul 20, 2007 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Guess hows pitching in Omaha?
Yep-Reyes, against uber prospect Luke Hochevar-so far they are scoreless after 4 innings.

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

Update;
He does know what he's doing in AAA; he just pitched out of a bases loaded no outs jam with a ground ball out force at home, and then a ground ball double play......NOW it's 4 scoreless innings, and guess what the Redbirds are being no hit.  Love that run support, Anthony!

by jillsinmo on Jul 20, 2007 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

Final:
pitched 6 innings; left with score of 1-1.  Sigh, it's a no decision.  He gets no run support in the minors either.

Reyes WILL be recalled for Saturday.

I hope the kid throws a no-hitter
and then let's see them try to send him down.

Again, I rail against Reyes as much as anyone here.  However, at this point Mike Maroth and Kip Wells really AREN'T better options.  Let Maroth be a LOOGY, Kip a mop-up guy.

In Goold's Bird Land entry on Friday,
there were lovely tidbits like this:
Reyes is in Triple-A, so far off the radar that manager Tony La Russa recently said that struggling Kip Wells was going to stay in the rotation and no one was "waiting in the wings" to join the group.

I love that we take the best-pitching-prospect-in-our-system to not even in the conversation trip so quickly with TLR.  I wish I was privy to the relationship that Reyes has with TLR becuase there certainly seems to be something more here than just a talent evaluation.

As GM Walt Jocketty said: "The point is -- what are the alternatives?" Not too long ago Reyes was more than an alternative and now he has the feel of a bargaining chip.

Another favorite.

I support Reyes as much as anyone and I was pleased with the (initial) Kip Wells experiement but if the organization can't recognize that a young pitcher probably won't show up and go all 1984 Dwight Gooden on the league then we have serious problems.  Reyes has returned to Memphis and pitched well in his last two games (the first one was a stinker) going 6 innings w/ 1 ER each time.  He struck out 13 against 4 walks. AAA isn't where he struggles; it's likely not where he'll get straightened out.  Let's be realistic about 1) the Cardinals making the playoffs and 2) who is pitching better right now: Reyes or Maroth.

by azruavatar on Jul 23, 2007 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think they should just go ahead and
throw him away like a used kleenex.  Yeah, he's only in his 4th season of pro ball, he was the organizational pitcher of the year in 2005, a baseball america top 50 pick in 2006, and here it is 2007.  He has had his problems, but they sure have not handled his situation well at all.  Trading chip, indeed.
Don't be surprised if he goes all Dan Haren......Hey, whatever....LaDuncetty thinks Wells, Wellemeyer, Looper,  Maroth are more "deserving"  Nevermind- I want him here because even through all his struggles he never looked like the mental midget that Wells did.......
look at Rich Hill with the Cubs.....he struggled from AAA to the bigs-back and forth-and he struggles occasionally still.  But he's a really good pitcher now.  Sigh.....At this point, I think the only reason he's still here is someone in the organization that has the power to stop a deal has said no.  LaDuncetty gives the impression they can't wait to get him out of here.
