Rolen going to st louis because of injury

http://www.ksdk.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=124494

NewsChannel 5's Frank Cusumano reports Scott Rolen has left the Cardinals, who remain in Florida to play the Marlins Wednesday, to fly back to St. Louis for a medical exam.

Rolen is coming to St. Louis to meet with Dr. George Paletta about Rolen's shoulder.

Rolen had surgery on the shoulder in the 2005 season after a collision. It continued to bother him for parts of the 2006 season, but he said in Spring Training this year that his shoulder was not bothering him at all.

Rolen's power numbers have been down significantly this year, as he has 4 home runs. With the exception of the 2005 season, in which he only played 56 games, Rolen has hit at least 20 home runs every year since 1997.

Dr. Paletta is an orthopedic surgeon and is the Cardinals' Medical Director.

Rolen's primary backup at third base, Scott Spiezio, is on the Disabled List with an infection in his finger. It wasn't immediately clear who would play third base in Rolen's absence.

Well, Hoffpauer played 3B for Memphis last night. I'm only half-kidding.

This diary is guilty of plagiarism, though. Better trim down how much you quoted from the article and add some original commentary.

Well, you can't say
that he didn't cite his source.  Plagiarism is copying without attribution.  I think Gocardz' intent was to save folks the trouble of following the link he provided.  Not sure that's plagiarism.

It's definitely not plagiarism...
gocardz isn't claiming he wrote that. He states who wrote it. There is some internet rule of thumb as far as posting someone else's content though. Blurbs are ok, but not extensive tracts. The thing to do it post enough to give an idea of what the topic is, then post the link so people can get the details...
Ease LaDunketty out gently, thank him profusely, and... Hire Antonetti!!!

We've been over this before. I doubt KSDK gives a flying rats ass, but it's a bad habit to get into.

agreed ---- sorry i didn't see this diary sooner
this is a clear copyright infringement. if KSDK cared enough to send a cease-and-desist order, i would have no choice but to take it down.

this matter is addressed in the community guidelines. . . . .

I hope your kidding about Miles
the dude doesn't have the arm strenght, I'd say put Albert at third, move Duncan to first, and put ludwick in left. Not a very good idea, but what else is there?

frank gusamano just said
that miles and ryan have been taking grounders there.

He also said that several sources have said carpenter may be hetting tommy john surgery.  Not confirmed yet.

by gocardz on Jul 18, 2007 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

more frank news
cusumano also said within the last two hours on KFNS 590 that the words "tommy john" were being tossed about by people close to the carpenter situation, so take that as you will.

There goes the defense...
That was an awesome double play Rolen turned from his knees last night. Say what you will about his offense but has there been anybody better than him this year at the hot corner???

spezio is great at 3rd
he needs to get healthy. either  way are replacement
at 3rd will hit much better then rolen

I'd rather
have Speezer at third than Miles, but that is not an option right now.  But someone has to play third base.  Maybe they should give Oquendo a glove.  He is used to standing there the other half of the inning, would anyone notice if he snagged some grounders?

There's a third baseman
at Memphis. Rico Washington.

Does someone know why he's not an option?

Can't be lack of options, but I'm not sure.

Rolen hasn't been put on the DL
Who knows, he may just get a cortisone shot and start the 2nd game of the Atlanta series.  Until they find out what is wrong with him, they won't DL him.

I'm not sure
Washington is all that good.

If they call somebody up from here, I'd like to see it be Edgar Gonzalez...solid hitter, hard worker, can play second or third (though he doesn't have much experience at third).

by whopperman on Jul 18, 2007 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

He may not be all that good
but he's a third baseman.

I didn't know Gonzalez played a little 3rd base. If so, he's probably a better offensive option, if needed.

by player2bnamedl8r on Jul 18, 2007 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What about Arni Cruz?
If he is the second coming at Pujols how about we skip A - AAA and give him a bat. He can't be any worse with it in his hands than a gimpy Rolen. My only question would be how is his defense?

something along the lines of "fouled a ball of his leg and required knee surgery" but I can't remember the specific details.

I hadn't seen him in a while.  But I'm not at every home game, so I thought I might have just missed him.

Wheew, this is somewhat 'good news'
Text message from D. Goold in FLA, with additional reporting by Joe Strauss ... and we'll have much more online later:

Rolen asked for this....
Rolen wanted to see the doc...
According to Rolen, not a pain issue as much as it is him being confused / baffled/ saddened by his lack of production; he wants to see if it's anything medically related.
Is it wrong to post an entire forum post from a beat writer?  I feel dirty doing it.

so there's no pain?
if it was just weak, wouldn't he have known that by now?

I'm not at all surprised there's concern about the shoulder, but it doesn't seem as though he's having any trouble with it.

by chuckb on Jul 18, 2007 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Mather
Mather could play 3B - Granted he's not ready, but he is as ready as anyone else we could plug into 3B...

by Lawless on Jul 18, 2007 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Ryan
B. Ryan has a much better arm that Miles.  Also I hate having a short 3rd baseman with limited range.  B. Ryan is 6'2" and quick.  Put him at 3rd for a few games if that is all Rolen is going to miss.  If Rolen needs to go on the DL, hopefully Spezio comes off the DL at the same time.  Spezio then plays 3rd backed up by Ryan.  If both Spezio and Rolen are to spend extensive time on the DL together, we're screwed.  Might as well bring up Mather then.

According to TLR
Rolen is getting a cortisone shot in the shoulder and will be back with the team for the series with Atlanta.

They are hoping the shot 'rejuvinates' Rolen's shoulder.

I don't know
if thats good news or bad news, at least if he was injured that would give him an excuse for his lack of production.

by Romo9 on Jul 18, 2007 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it can't really be good news
that he had to get a cortisone shot.  That means there is still some sort of problem with it......if the shot helps him play then that part sounds like good news.  I wonder if that shoulder has been bothering him so long that he stopped feeling any pain, you know like dealing with arthritis or something.  It always hurts just a little, but not enough to stop doing what you're doing.  You just put it out of your mind and keep going.

Well, let us not forget

NEW YORK -- Scott Rolen was on the bench for the St. Louis Cardinals' first-round clincher. He expects to be in the lineup throughout the National League Championship Series.

Rolen said Tuesday he did not ask out of the lineup before Game 4 against the San Diego Padres due to fatigue and soreness in his surgically repaired left shoulder. He said he simply informed Tony La Russa about his condition after consulting with the team doctor, and left the decision in the manager's hands.

"I want to be in there for Game 1 through however many we play," Rolen said after the Cardinals worked out at Shea Stadium. "I'm ready to go. I feel fine."

A cortisone injection Sunday night, hours after the Cardinals finished off the Padres, should help one of the team's core players rejoin the lineup against the New York Mets on Wednesday night. Rolen was second on the team this season with 95 RBI despite a steep decline in the final month that he blamed on the shoulder.

He then went
13 for 40 with 5 XBH.  Of course, it should be 14 for 40 with 6 XBH, shouldn't it, Endy?

You know
Looking back, every time I see footage of that Endy Chavez catch, I get goosebumps.  I think that had we ultimately lost the game, I would probably get sick to my stomach every time I saw that.  But because we came out on top, I recognize it as probably the best defensive play - considering the situation and pressure - I've seen in my life (23 years).  And it was also possibly the best game I've seen in 23 years.  But I could be biased ;)

Very strange
Seems odd, no pain...cortisone shot.  Doesn't seem to add up.

Hopefully it's only going to be a game or two.

How about Albert going back to third for a few games?   Duncan can take first.

I bet if it's going to be awhile, the Cards make a scrap heap move to get it covered.   Can Stinnett play third?

by RedbirdRay on Jul 19, 2007 9:11 AM EDT reply actions

Duncan at 1st
Couldn't that cause some bad habits if we moved him back to first for a couple games. He is improving at left and is it really worth ruining that for a few games. Also Pujols is gold glove material at first, he can make up for some throwing mistakes.

by Romo9 on Jul 19, 2007 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder if I'm the only one just a
little bit troubled that "Scott asked for this."  Did LaDunc not notice that he's had a complete lack of power for, well, most of the season?  We noticed, the reporters noticed.  I just wonder why they wouldn't have had him examined, no matter if he said it didn't hurt.  Seems strange to me.
