looper

kim

2-1, 2.37

1-1, 2.37

what an unusual pitching pairing. as i noted back in december, byung-hyun kim is one of the very few precedents for the braden looper experiment --- ie, one of the few career relievers to convert to a starting role midcareer. the comparison's holding up pretty well so far, at a superficial level anyway:

career ERA
relief
career ERA
starter
kim 3.51 4.81
looper 3.57 4.72

looper is hanging in there as a starting pitcher, but one of the major points of skepticism about this conversion --- would he have the stamina??? --- is proving to be more than justified. after 50 pitches, looper hits the wall:

ab hr so avg obp slg
pitches 1 - 50 196 2 27 .219 .271 .301
pitches 51 - up 170 7 16 .335 .403 .524

all hurlers tend to fare worse as their pitch counts mount, but this split is off the charts. after the 2d time through the order, looper should be pulled at the first sign of trouble.

Lineup
CARDINALS
D. Eckstein SS
S. Schumaker CF
A. Pujols 1B
C. Duncan LF
S. Rolen 3B
J. Encarnacion RF
A. Kennedy 2B
G. Bennett C
B. Looper P

I thought Molina would get yesterday off, gets today instead.  Still no Edmonds.  With Skippy in the lineup, that means he wasn't activated either.

Skip played well last night, but why all of a sudden is he getting starts over Ludwick?

Skip over Lud
IMO Skip is better than Ludwick.  I've always thought that if Skip would get an opportunity to play everyday (opposed to this spot-start, pinch hit every other game BS), he would start to contribute and catch on as a fan favorite.

by stltrav09 on Jul 16, 2007 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Like saying mud tastes better than dirt...
Skip = decent average, no power, few walks. He's basically a younger So Taguchi. Seems to be streaky like So, too.

Ludwick = so-so average, lots of power, no walks. I guess he's like Craig Paquette (or probably Ankiel).

Sort of even out. I guess if you consider OBP more important than power, Skip would be better. But historically, Ludwick has done better in the past in terms of that than this year.

LaRussa's inability to remove pitchers on time
Agree wholeheartedly that Looper should be yanked at the first sign of trouble. However, LaRussa is extremely intent on keeping pitchers in the game for one of two reasons:

1) He wants them to go 5 innings to get the win.

That's nice of Tony and all, but there have been multiple occasions when he's left the starter in there and just "hopes" that the guy will work out of it.  I've seen it this year with Looper and Wainwright.

2) He wants to keep guys in so that he can pinch-hit for them in the hitting half of the inning.

This one is insane.  Maybe he does it because he wants to use his bench efficiently, I don't know.  But it's just crazy.  Win now, protect the lead now!  Don't worry about having enough bench players later down the road!  It's quasi-similar to his reasoning for leaving Albert on the bench in the All-Star game.

I can't remember where I read it, but someone said that LaRussa is too busy thinking three steps ahead that he doesn't see what's right in front of him.  That's spot on.

Looper
IMO we should trade Looper ASAP.  The conversion to a SP has gone okay so far, but it seems like he is starting to hit a wall.  He is much better suited as a reliever as evidenced by LBs post above.  However, he has more trade value as an average starter than a slightly above average reliever.  We should try to trade him now before it becomes even more obvious that he cannot last as a SP.  Hell, Kent Bottenfield   nabbed us Edmonds.  It seems like its worth a shot.

I would have said the opposite...
While I guess you can watch the baseball game on FSN Midwest, you have to listen to Al and Dan act as Tony apologists, explaining why Tony is a genius for starting Wells in the first game from the half. And how Duncan's "pitch to contact" theory is so much better than trying to strike guys out. Because just look at Kim - he's thrown 20 more pitches than Looper (never mind he's walked 5)...

i've never really had a problem with the STL
media till this season. most of them are complete homers. they bow down and kiss the Cardinals butts, and almost never say any thing bad about them. plus with Tony walking all over them and picking fights with Bernie (who along with jeff Gordon are the only guys i've heard this season say any thing bad about the Cardinals) and joel goldberg of FSN, they are the softest media covering a major league team. and i think it should stop.

Give some credit
Derrick Goold and Joe Strauss do a great job covering the cards. I find Miklasz' sometimes antagonistic attitude towards the Cardinals more annoying and self-aggrandizing than helpful and informative.

Al Hrabosky does annoy me, though. Rick Horton does a great job. He's respectful of the players and other baseball men without being obeisant. He strikes the right balance, I think.

I haven't paid much attention to Gordon for years.

by liam on Jul 16, 2007 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

guess i should have been clearer
i talking about what i've seen on tv & heard on the radio.

the PD guys i think do a very good job of calling out the Cards if they suck. Bernie is the only guy I've heard calling out the Cards on tv and the radio. I think he does that because no one else does. antagonistic is a good word to use to describe him sometimes. but he and Gordon when they are on FSN are usually the only guys calling out the Cards and "telling it like it is", I.E, the Cards suck this season.

AL's the biggest homer ever. i mean the guys cool, but seriously. for some reason Ricky annoyes me to no end. nice guy, but man i think he's hard to take seriously.

now i live in ohio and dont hear & read all the STL media, so if i'm missing someone, that's why.  but this is how an outsider see's the STL media.

Good win for the Redbirds.
They looked focused out there tonight, unlike how they sleepwalked through that first game in Philly.

Probably wishful thinking, but maybe AK is turning it around?

Franklin continues to anchor the bullpen.  He got into some trouble tonight, but bore down and pitched out of it.  Miggy hitting that home run (which he will do against any pitcher) with nobody on instead of two or three runners on made the difference.

With Duncan hitting like he is, Albert should get more pitches to hit.  Now if only Rolen can turn it on a bit.

I grew up
listening to Jack and Mike, so I'm biased that way.

Suppose a lot of us who grew up in the '70's would say that, but I remember nights pretending to sleep, listening to AM radio while wearing an earpiece, living or dying on JB's lyrical phrases.

This really dates me, but
Harry Carey back in his prime made me feel, while listening to games, what America is supposed to be. No one I know of has ever come close.  "Don't spike him boys he's the franchise", said during a celebration when Cepeda was being mobbed by jubliant teammates......  I could go on for months.

Does Al Hrabosky's inability to shut up
bother any of you as much as it does me.  He was babbling on about pitch counts and pitch to contact blah, blah, blah, and said Kim was having trouble because he wasn't pitching to contact like all good pitchers do to keep their count low blah, blah, blah, except he forgot to note that Kim had issued SEVEN WALKS--the poor guy couldn't find the strike zone. He was oblivious to the fact that Kim's pitch count was high because he plain couldn't throw a strike to be swung at.....

by jillsinmo on Jul 16, 2007 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

Kim is sorta like Kip
He has great stuff that moves like crazy, but he often has no idea where its going.  If he's on, he's almost unhittable.  But, if he's off, he starts to walk guys and then, to conpensate, groves the pitch and gets way too much of the plate.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, i was stuck with the telethon on Fox Sports Florida (or whatever it's called) so i didn't get to hear Al.  However, it sounds like he was just spewing company line and that's all.  I guess if he can convince the fans that pitch-to-contact is "THE" way to pitch, people will get off Duncan's ass.  Who knows?

I'd like to think he's just a kiss-ass who takes that role upon himself, but after LaRussa's reaction to the media after the Hancock death I'm more inclined to think those statements have a higher point of origin.

With all that said though, I'd rather listen to Dan and Al as opposed to most every other local team.  Probably because we have the same rooting interest.  But outside of Vin Scully, there aren't many out-of-town teams I want to listen to.  Although, I have to admit I'm a fan of Mark Grace.  I think he's hilarious and was upset when Brennaman left for cincy.

by Big Red on Jul 16, 2007 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I was annoyed because it
was so obvious the pitcher was wild......it had nothing to do with pitching philosophy....Kim couldn't find the strike zone.

stone vs lyons
OK, after this i promise i'm getting some sleep so i can think straight. Lboros was right as usual. that's why he's the man, and i am not.

Steve Stone worked for WGN with Harry and then Chip. he was pretty good actualy with Harry. i remember watching a lot of cubs game as a kid with him and Harry. when Harry got wasted Steve was at his best. he got a raw deal when the Tribune Co. fired him and Chip when they were ragging on cub players and moises alou and him almost got into a fight. sorry to all the Steve Stone fans, and Mr.Stone himself.

Steve Lyons is the guy who works for Prime Ticket, and until last season, Big FOX. in the booth Sweet Lou made a comment about wallets during the ALCS, and Lyons then made his racest remark about spanish people stealing wallets, and Big FOX fired him the next day. he also made fun of some poor blind mets fan during last years NLDS. but he still works for Prime Ticket. and unless something else happens, when VIN hangs it up in a year or two, it will be Lyons & Charlie calling all Dodger games.

if any of my info is wrong, blame wikipedia. thanks Lboros for catching my error.

i'm going to try and get some sleep. good night VEB. to quote the best broadcaster of all time,  i'll see you all, tomorrow night.

Edmonds ready to play
LaRussa is busting his balls about 'performance'.

"It's not enough to get somebody back," La Russa said Monday as the Cardinals opened a three-game series against the Florida Marlins. "We need somebody back playing productively. That's what we need."

Which is total crap.  They brought back Encarnacion who was hitting on his rehab assignment in the .100s.

LaRussa's double standards for certain players is staggering.  Kip Wells is healthy but not producing, yet he keeps getting trotted back out there.  Randy Flores is healthy but not producing, yet he keeps getting trotted back out there.

Edmonds has said since the weekend that he is ready to play.  You and I saw how lefties KILLED BYK tonight, yet Edmonds stayed on the DL.

Hurk, Tuesday's starter is giving up a .310 average to LHB (small sample size). Willis is only giving up .133 to LHB.

So, Edmonds could play tomorrow against Hurk but will sit against Willis.  They then face James (LHP)[.274 vs LHB], Caryle (RHP) [.312 vs LHB], Davies (RHP).

Once all the chest thumping is over with, Edmonds should start Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  I have no idea who they will pitch Sunday.
