8th rounder, paul henley
has a nice scouting report: excellent range in cf, hits to all fields with decent power, great on-base skills, "gamer" mentality.

henley bio info

gotta love that he had a HS g.p.a of 5.06 on a 5.0 scale and rushed for 1700 yards as a senior. Smart, talented and athletic.

Agreed
Henley does sound intriguing.  His overall package of tools and skills sort of reminds me of Jon Jay from last year's class.  His range sounds better, but his bat isn't quite as advanced.
Acquire Rocco Baldelli!

also, the 11th rounder
michael stutes, was listed among keith law's top 100 picks; cards got him at #292. i wonder if that's a signability issue?

He's a junior...
sounds like a guy who could really help himself by going back for a year.

another pundit opinion
bryan smith rates two of the cards' picks --- jess todd in the 2d round and kyle russell in the 4th --- among the top 10 "value" picks in the draft.

for whatever that's worth.

FWIW
a lot of the comments on yesterdays thread lamented the 4 college pitchers, etc.  Not that it changes his talent level any, but Jess Todd is only a junior and could go back for his senior year.  Nobody at Arkansas thinks he will, but he is not as completely "safe" as many assumed yesterday.

2nd day
A couple of these picks look fairly good to me.  I think, in general, that I just mostly prefer picking the younger, higher ceiling high school type players to more polished collegians.  I understand the idea of track records and all of that, but I've always thought you should take the best possible talent, get the player into your system, and start them on the organisation's preferred developmental track.  Each org. has certain beliefs and quirks, and the younger you get a player into your system, the sooner he can start learning the team's preferred MO.
Acquire Rocco Baldelli!

stephen hill
slugged over .800...slugging 1st baseman, 13th round, somewhat obscure school...hmmm...

i catch your drift...
... haha. we should be so lucky.

but wasn't Pujols drafted as a 3B?

by kindred on Jun 8, 2007 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pujols came up as a 3b
He'd probably still be playing there now if we hadn't made the Rolen trade.

Did anyone notice
that the Cardinals drafted not one but two Steven Hills, the first baseman in the 13th round and a pitcher in the 34th?  If once you don't succeed....

2 of the same
About 10 years or so ago, the Cardinals screwed up in a draft and drafted a player who had the same name as a much more talented player in the draft and didn't realize it until the next day that they accidently drafted the wrong one. I wish I could remember their name. I wonder if this was something similar...oops! wrong one, now we have to draft them both.
How about handin' me another helpin' of those mashed taters...thank you very much!
