Game 49 Open Thread: May 29, 2007, 6:05 CDT

GAME TIME 6:05 CDT

they may not get this game in; we got a heavy hailstorm at 1:30 pm, and it rained for three hours after that. the rain has stopped for now, but soggy clouds are still draped overhead and the ground is saturated.

a little followup from this morning's Q+A with jeff luhnow: tommy pham and wilmer alvarado, a couple of the players who luhnow said are doing well at extended spring training, were promoted today to class A Quad Cities. pretty good challenge for these players, who are both still teenagers. until now, the 8-man rotation had served as quad cities' chief point of interest; suddenly the everyday lineup has become interesting, too.

here's an interesting item: tom verducci used bill james' projections to forecast the all-time leaderboard for base hits circa 2025. albert pujols stands 4th on that make-believe list, just ahead of The Man:

  1. Rose 4256
  2. Cobb, 4189
  3. Aaron, 3771
  4. Pujols, 3752
  5. Musial, 3630
El Hombre has 1213 career hits entering this evening's play.

I saw that list...
Renteria is headed for 3000 too. I just can't see him in the hall, but I guess you get points for starting young.

by guayzimi on May 29, 2007 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Edgar
doesn't just get points for starting off young,
he gets points for starting off pretty damn awesome
.

The "Great" SS class of the late 90's-early '00's is crowded (Rodriguez, Jeter, Tejada, etc) but Edgar is right in there with them.

Viva El Capitain.

Everybody off the bandwagon!

by Alxfritz on May 29, 2007 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to be snide...
but what was so awesome about early-Renteria?

His first six years' OPS+ were 104, 80, 86, 85, 94, and 78.

by guayzimi on May 29, 2007 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, you're right
"awesome" probably isnt the right word...

"damn solid for a 20 year old-ish SS" works a lot better.

Granted, I am a noted-Edgar apologist, but, man, he's a really talented baseball player. Perhaps the only way he makes the hall is in the Glavine-Biggio mold -- ie, maybe not great, but good and healthy for 20 years -- but if Edgar performs as he is now and has before until he's 38, i think he's a HOFer.

And of course, since the HOF is totally arbitrary anyway, I really don't care if anyone disagrees with me.

Everybody off the bandwagon!

by Alxfritz on May 29, 2007 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm...
your assertion that arbitrariness has a place in baseball aside, there are mixed signals regarding Edgar's HOF bid.

On the one hand, if he makes 3000 hits, he's probably a lock. On the other he's had 4.33 above average seasons out of 12, and his legendary "clutchness" in October is exposed when you realize his lifetime postseason line is .246/.328/.319 in about 240 plate appearances.

BR's Hall of Fame predictor has him on the outside looking in, but his top comp is Roberto Alomar and he's got 3 other HOF'ers in his top ten and two borderline guys.

I'd say he's not going to make it, and even though you don't care I must say I hope he doesn't b/c all he really has going for him is his sub-par work with Florida inflating his counting stats.

He got the key hit in '97, he was truly great in '03, and he brought us Rasmus. That's really all he's done of note.

by guayzimi on May 29, 2007 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Hall or not
He was a very key part of this team. Every bit as much as edmonds and rollen. The Cards were foolish to let him go!

Draft
This is probably a rudimentary question, but how do they determine the draft order? Is it based on regular season finish or does it include the post season like the NFL?

by Pokey Joe on May 29, 2007 7:07 PM EDT reply actions

As we are choosing 18th...
it must not include the post-season.

Venditte Jr.
He started the game against Wichita State the other night. It was on FSMW after the Cardinals game.

I recorded it to the DVR but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

He and Joey Niezer (at Wabash College) are two college pitchers who I've kept a stray eyeball on for the two past years. Venditte for his switch-pitchin' and Niezer because Rob Neyer supposedly taught him to throw a gyroball. (Although his pitching coach says it's just a slider.)

by liam on May 29, 2007 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Who has a better future in pro ball,
the ambidextrous college kid who tops out at 80 left-handed, a guy who learned at the knee of Rob Neyer, or any random 17-year-old on the street in Santo Domingo?

I'll take the Dominican...

by guayzimi on May 29, 2007 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Venditte
I've got a suspicion that those VSL and DSL scout leagues are meatgrinders, where for every kid that makes it to the big leagues, there are ten or fifteen left behind with crippled shoulders and elbows.

I hope that's not the case and would like to see one of the big-time sportswriters go see for themselves. Was hoping Halberstam would be the one to do it...

by liam on May 29, 2007 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

There's a high school
kid, IIRC, here in Chicagoland (Oak Park, maybe) who  pitches that way.

I thought I read in the article about him in the Trib that swapping pitching arms somehow wasn't legal in the majors.

by sdrone on May 29, 2007 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

IIRC
the rules are that a pitcher can only switch arms between at bats (and has to pick before the batter) while the batter can switch whenever he feels like it.

at what point are the Cards
going to just walk holliday? the dude just kills us, I see no point in pitching to him anymore.

does any one else wonder if Tony will start batting the pitcher 8th again any time soon? I remember in Detroit today he loved having ECK hitting 9th because he saw it has having two leadoff hitters back to back. looking that the line ups tonight and recently, he's had both ECK and Kennedy hitting 8th. why not just have whoever is not hitting well hit 7th, then the pitcher 8th, then ECK or Kennedy 9th? what would be wrong with that?

just trying to think outside of the box and see if anything will jump start this offense. so all you old schoolers out there who feel the pitcher should always bat 9th, please don't jump down my throat.

Horrible!
Sad to say but this is not just a unsuccessful team, it has become a very dull team, to boot.  To me, that compounds the problem.  Playing from behind early night in and night out is a drag, and Rolen's and Edmunds' ABs are dreadful whatever the score.

God help us if the high point of the season turns out to be Yadi hitting in 15 straight (and, the way it is going, never getting a hit again).

As the author of last year's "Folsom Prison Blues" about Izzy, I will be the first to admit all the above doesn't apply to him.  He's been great.  I wish it meant more.

The cat is fine, thank you.

by Intheway on May 29, 2007 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, but . . .
3 games we were the complete opposite of that. Sure, we've lost two games in a row, but our offense has been heating up (with the exception of yesterday). Edmonds and Rolen have both been showing signs of life as well.

Your comment might've worked a lot better a couple weeks ago, but no matter how you look at it, we're still 6.5 back and we're definitely improving as a team. Don't lose hope yet!

On a slightly more uplifting note than this game
Colby Rasmus is now 3-4 with 1 HR, 2 2BS, and 7! RBI for Springfield.  His OPS is edging up toward 1000.

Why do I always find the prospects more interesting when the big club is getting spanked?

Kennedy
has been a huge disappointment.  Did he suddenly get old at 31?  Some guys do.

I never heard why he left, did anyone? did they say on TV? of course with the bad announcers the Rocks have I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped it completly.

As if he'd just read your question, John Rooney said that Speizio was "feeling sick."  Yadi has a bruised wrist (I think they did x-rays at the ballpark).

Stat:
Cardinals' # of homeruns tonight: 2
Rockies' # of homeruns tonight: 1

Cardinals' RBI's off of homeruns: 2
Rockies' # off of homeruns: 4

Why does it seem like all of our homeruns are solo shots?

In Albert we trust.

ok
if the pitchers can stop giving runs back then maybe they could claw into it...1-1 goes to 5-1 then 5-2 to 6-2 now its 6-3...maybe dont allow a run next inning??

Springfield
Now that was a good game, rasmus ends up with two doubles a homer and seven rbi's.   I'm watching Springfield instead of st Louis any more, more of a chance to watch a team win

Yeah, as much fun as last week seemed to be
this week is all the more depressing.  We should have moved up in the standings, even if we took a hit today, the Cardinals should only be 3.5 games back or so.

This team isn't trending in the right direction and with all the injuries piling up, moves are going to have to be made.  Someone is going to have to go on the DL (Duncan is a likly candidate).  If they are concerned about Eckstein's back, perhaps he too should head to the DL and an outfielder not named Skip Shumaker get the callup.

This isn't the panic 'make moves for the sake of making moves', however the Cardinals can't keep operating with a 17-man roster.  Even as bad as everything has been, they still have a legit shot of winning this division.  They can't, however, keep bleeding games like this.

Interested in pre-1990 Cardinals games on tape
