chico

wagonmaker

3-4, 5.54

4-3, 6.02

GAME TIME 1:15 CDT

erik's got some family duties this morning, so i'm tossing a quick post up; hope everyone is having a safe and fun holiday weekend.

notes on today's starting pitchers: the washington hurler, matt chico, is a flyball pitcher, so it's no surprise that his era is 2 runs better at home, in his capacious home ballpark, than on the road --- he has a 6.31 era away from rfk stadium. wagonmaker has the opposite split: 4.88 era at home, vs 7.48 on the road. another point about wags: his batting average on balls in play this season is .388, the highest figure in the league and nearly 100 points above the league average. that's way out of line with his batted-ball data: he's allowing line drives at about an average rate (18.3 percent), and his groundball percentage is quite high (50 percent). if we apply standard hit rates to adam's batted-ball distribution, he ought to have about 53 hits allowed, or 18 fewer than his actual total:

type no. rate exp
hits
groundball 87 .22 21
flyball 53 .11 6
line drive 32 .71 23
homers 3 1.0 3
TOTAL -- -- 53

those rates come from an old Hardball Times analysis. note that wainwright has only allowed 3 homers all season --- two of them on a windy day at wrigley --- which suggests that he's hardly defenseless out there; batters aren't just teeing off on him. on the other hand, he has yielded 16 doubles, which is a pretty high rate. wagon's strikeout rate, while not great (5.8 per 9 innings), is certainly more than acceptable. i think as long as wainwright continues to keep the ball in the park, he's going to be okay --- hitters simply are not going to sustain a .388 BABIP against him for a full season.

the cardinals still have an outside chance to post a winning record for the month of may; they're currently 10-12, with 5 to play. if they win 4 of the remaining games, they'll finish the month at 14-13 --- which in my opinion would be an noteworthy feat, insofar as the month essentially began with the death of a player. it also would be the cards' first winning month since august 2006, and only their second winning month in the last 6 of regular-season play. i don't think it's particularly likely, because to pull this off they'll have to win the series out here in my town, vs the rockies --- and the rocks are suddenly playing well, having won 4 in a row. it might just be that they've had one good cycle through the rotation --- colorado has allowed only 5 runs during the win streak --- but the rockies generally play well at home, and the cardinals generally don't play their best out here. still, it's within reach and a worthy goal to shoot for. i won't be at tomorrow's game, but i'll likely be at the last 3 games of the denver set.

the cardinals have risen to 8th in the league in batting average, but they remain 15th in the league in slugging --- no shock, since they're 15th in doubles and 16th in triples and homers. last night, case in point --- 10 singles and a double. although they're hitting .325 over the last 11 games, they only have 9 homers over that span, which isn't sufficient; at some point they're bound to stop hitting .325, at which point they may find themselves hurting for runs again. the cardinals are on pace to hit fewer than 100 homers --- something that last happened in 1992, the second year of the joe torre managerial regime. and since the cardinals lead the league with 208 stolen bases that year and finished 3d in on-base percentage, the formula worked --- they finished in the middle of the pack in runs scored.

start hitting some more homers, guys.

P.S.: todd wellemeyer watch --- 14 pitches last night, 11 strikes.

ESPN has today's starting pitchers as:
WAS: Chico (3-4, 5.54 ERA)
STL: Wainwright (4-3, 6.02 ERA)

Thought I would let you know.

OK that's weird because
when I first saw the page it had Chico as 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA and Wagonmaker at 9-10 with a 5.64 ERA... maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me...

Chico looks like
he woke up out of bed five minutes ago, and just now remembered that he's a major league pitcher.

Let's see that mega curve again today, waggie.

JEd and ScRo...
are starting to look like themselves again... Jimmy's been turning on inside pitches, and Rolen's swing appears better than it has all season...

The Nats came into this series hot... here's hoping the Birds cool 'em off this afternoon!

It's a beautiful day for a ballgame!

It was nice last night to see MV3 get multiple hits in the same game.

Last two games
Friday:
MV3
6/11 3R 2HR 3RBI 1BB

Saturday
MV3
5/11 3R 1 2B 5RBI 2BB

This series so far:
MV3
11/22 6R 2HR 1 2B 8RBI 3BB

I'll take that.  Let's tack on another HR or 2 and a couple doubles, driving in 4 more and call it a series.

Has anybody read re: Juan
That it will take a while for him to get his power stroke back?  I know wrists are funny things, but it seems like he's hitting the ball pretty well, and had a homer taken away by chris duffy.

Lets not forget the guy slugged .500 all summer last year.  That could be exactly what we need.

I hope they do.  I'm getting tired of backlogging games.

We've got a chance to move up on the Brewers today, as they are throwing Suppan against Peavy.

Win today puts us 5.5 out.

Bernie likes to talk

Is it just me
or does it seem like the cardinals website is always very late to post news that might seem negative?  I.E. Reyes' demotion, or big losing streaks or player suspensions and stuff?
It seems like they don't want people to know negative things until they absolutely HAVE to post it.

Assuming Reyes goes down.....
Does that put Franklin in the rotation with Wellemeyer taking the 8th?

by FunkeeC on May 27, 2007 1:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WHAT?
Why don't we let Cate have a chance at starting?  He was lighting it up in the the Winter Leagues.  I know he got roughed up a little bit in memphis, but it couldn't hurt to see what he could do.  Granted, his next assignment is in Colorado, but still.

Radio update
Yep.  TLR is talking with Shannon.  Reyes goes down, Cate comes up to the bullpen and Wellemeyer will take Reyes spot in the rotation.

Wainwright
baseball prospectus has his BABIP right now at .400, as LB said, highest in baseball for anyone w/ 30 +  innings.  Last year, Joe Blanton had baseball's highest BABIP among qualifying pitchers w/ .341 so it stands to reason that Wainwright's will fall.  And I agree, as long as he's keeping the ball down and in the park, he's going to be OK.

FYI, some pretty good pitchers often have high BABIP as it tends to be pretty random -- last year Andy Petttitte's was .333, 4th highest, Curt Schilling (7th) was .328, Brad Penny (8th) was .327, Ian Snell (who I love, 9th) was .327, Aaron Harang (11th) was .326, Jeremy Bonderman (14th) was .323, and Dontrelle Willis (18th) was .316.  It's still my contention that Wainwright's going to be a very good SP.

Hopefully this is a wakeup call for Reyes
But I hope to have him back soon. Although, I really can't say I'd rather have Wellemeyer in the rotation than Cate or Franklin.

ugh...sickening...
i pray we trade reyes for the kids sake, he is one of my favorite cardinal pitchers and the sad part is, his last start was the first time all year that he had given up more than 4 runs. sigh...no more high socks/flat bill, tis a sad day in cardinals lore.

by lopey986 on May 27, 2007 2:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

whoops...
i meant his detroit start was the first time he'd given up more than 4 runs all year. i guess two real bad starts in a row is what did him in, but you'd think a move to the bullpen would've been a better move rather than outrighting him to the minors.

by lopey986 on May 27, 2007 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i disagree
if he stays in the rotation in memphis he can still stay in the groove as a starter so he can work on whatever it is that's going wrong.  If he is just in the bullpen, he won't get regular work and it will be completely different than he is used to.

by Molina4MVP on May 27, 2007 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe...
i still think DD originally messed reyes up with the whole pitch to contact philosophy instead of just letting him go out there and rock and fire and pitch his game.

and while going to triple a and being in a rotation will allow him to stay in his starting groove, i think it is far more damaging to him mentally than a move to the bullpen on the big club would be.

by lopey986 on May 27, 2007 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that DD messed him up...
...with an assist from TLR. I hope he'll be traded to where he'll have a lot of success.

by Ignatius J Reilly on May 27, 2007 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the sixth inning did him in
Yes, he hasn't suffered many blowouts, but he also hasn't shut anyone down. Only two quality starts in nine attempts, one of which on a technicality with a fourth run unearned.

He was potentially headed for his third against one of the league's least potent lineups, with only two tallies against him and two breezy innings in the 4th and 5th.... Then he absolutley craps his pants against the bottom of said lineup, immediately giving back the two runs his offense had just scored in support.

I wonder if he lost the clubhouse out there. He was already starved for run support, and to squander what little he was given, so quickly... I was disgusted as a distant spectator. It could have been 100 times more sickening for the guys in the dugout.

I'm shocked
I just can't believe the dropped Anthony. and now welly is taking his spot? at least with Anthony we had a shot at winning the games he started. welly going to get KILLED.

the Cards have really F***ED UP Anthony. He could be a #1 or #2 starter, and they've done nothing but mess up his career. I hate to say it, but it's time for them to trade him for a big bat. if they can.

I just don't understand how they can mess up one young guy so badly, yet with Adam they've really done pretty good with the kid. it makes no sence.

nice first inning Adam. keep it up kid.

Have the coachs' success gone to their heads?
Wellemeyer in the rotation?

Sure, it worked (so far) for Looper.  And it's sorta worked for Thompson (granted he was a starter in the minors).  But this move of Wellemeyer is dumb IMO.

I wouldn't have put Cate in there since he's shown he's a better reliever, but still...

Granted, we don't have anymore starters outside of Franklin, but I'd be too scared to take him out of the setup role.

Whatever.  Good luck Todd.  I have a feeling you're going to need it.

Wellemeyer as starter
If he can keep his walks down, he should be just fine. In his minor league career, he started in 96/106 appearances. This will be his first major league start, though, and his first since 2005.

He's always controlled the home runs pretty well and racked up plenty of strikeouts.

It should be fun to watch, in any case.

Wainer has looked quite good today. I suppose that high BABIP is a fluke and has to come down eventually, and his efficiency is much better than it was in his last start. I'd rather see no runs permitted and quick working than no runs permitted and laborious pitch-wasting.

they had some show on and TLR was on and they took a call about reyes and the infamous CHI game..it was probably someone on this thread.

Their is some concern about him more from the host than TLR...TLR said its tough for him to take his lumps at this level. Siad that he had 4 scoreless inngings in the WA game and thats what he needs to build off of...then the show host mentioned the hits he is giving up are real hard hits..etc.

TLR was optimistic but said the club is concerned about him.

  3. If you need a guy to come in and thrown nothing close to a strike(Flores) call me.
4.If you need situational bad fielding(kennedy) call me

It is a shame
that Wagonmaker gets tagged with the loss after only allowing 2 runs over 7 innings, striking out 7 and walking none.

great start by Wainwright
no doubt about it.  Bad pitch to Belliard but good start nonetheless.  He deserved a better fate.

Sorry
AW struck out six, not seven.  He did give up 7 hits, so maybe that is where I got the 7 from.

Wainwright is recuperating nicely
but I think talk of our turnaround may be premature. Did we really just lose 2 of 3 to the Nats, in a series that we were supposed to gain some forward momentum from?

But remember the Challenge Rating?
The Nats are red hot right now, too bad we weren't the ones to cool them off but, hey, we took one.  Better than the Brew Crew fared against the Padres.

Well thank goodness for the Cubs bullpen
they will make this day once again 'not happen', other than the Pirates.

Barrett tries to pick off the runner at 2nd and the guy steals 3rd!  Bless the Cubbies and their ineptitude.

Cubs play tomorrow afternoon, lose 2 hours due to the time change, get into Chicago around 10 am tomorrow and play at 1:20.  This game could end up costing them 2.

Wild Pitch
Micheal Barrett arguing SOMETHING, but no idea what.

Bases loaded, no outs, bounces in the dirt.  It either hits Juan Pierre in the foot or it doesn't, but either way, the run score because Barrett let's it roll to the backstop.

Cubs lose
Brewers lose
Astros lose
Reds lose

Had the Cards won today, they'd be 5.5 games out of first.  Ugh.

I didn't think I'd see a worse loss this season than the one the Cubs pulled off on Friday. That's got to hurt.

The Demotion of Reyes...
Read about it earlier today, and it's been bugging me ever since.

I pose this question to Larry (as it's his blog) and any others that might have answers:  Does the data exist (and can we get ahold of it) to show how many of Reyes' games this year were lost due to his pitching vs. those lost due to lack of run support?

I know he's had some bad games pitching wise, but it seems to me that many of his losses this year have come from little to zero run support from the rest of the team.  And (in the question above) if the numbers prove this, how exactly is the record he posseses currently all his fault - why was he demoted to Triple A to "work on some stuff and get a better feeling" (Post-Dispatch)?

If the numbers prove me wrong, then I'm wrong, and I'll accept the decision to demote him.  And I'll be the first to say I'm going on memory here, and posted this without any knowledge of the numbers.  I'm not speaking of fairness to Reyes, because sometimes things aren't fair, and I know that sometimes baseball is a business and someone needs to take the blame.  As it stands now, I do not think Reyes is totally to blame for his poor record, and I don't like this demotion.

Or even if someone knows where to acquire this data... any numbers help would be appreciatied.

How about this:
This might get you started—I have to run out the door.

The Cardinals score, on average, 3.7 runs per game and the bullpen has a 3.49 ERA—so they give up about 0.388 runs per inning. It would be better to get an average number of runs scored in non-Reyes starts, which should be a little higher than 3.7 runs.

A quick n' dirty method is to see whether he would have won any of his starts had the bullpen given up an average number of runs over however many innings they had to work and the offense had scored an average number of runs for the game.

So if he pitches five innings on the road, the 'pen needs to pitch four innings, and will give up 1.552 runs, so he'd need to allow one runs in such a start. He should have won the May 7th game at home against Colorado, though. He went six innings and gave up two runs. That leaves the bullpen to pitch three innings, over which they'd be expected to give up 1.16 runs to total 3.16 < 3.7 ...

Here's his gamelog:

DATE GAME IP  H R ER HR BB SO
7-Ap @HOU 5.0 5    3 3  0  1  3
16-A  PIT 5.0 6 3 3  0  3  2

Only one deserved win...
I agree with this assessment. He really only pitched well enough to "deserve" a win once this year, that game against Colorado. Only one other time did he throw a "quality start" - 3ER or less in 6IP or more, which is the conventional measure of keeping your team in a game, so the team might have a 50-50 chance of winning on such a day. However, a reliever would be just as likely to win on a day like that.

I don't buy the argument that Reyes deserved more wins than that, although with any luck (or a start on a Sunday) he probably would have gotten two or three Ws by now.

He has thoroughly earned his demotion.

by taiko on May 28, 2007 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When you have an era of 6.08
it almost doesn't matter what kind of run support you get. You'd be hard-pressed to find an offense good enough to give good run support with that kind of pitching.

Looking at the numbers, it seems like Sophie's major problem is getting out of jams. His WHIP, at 1.35, is not extremely high when compared to his ERA. He's averaging about 2.7 BB/9 which is not too bad. When you put it all together, AReyes allows (this is excluding errors here) around 12 baserunners per game. 6 runs for 12 baserunners is a very high number. The perplexing part? Sophie only allows about 1 HR/9 innings. Simply put, teams are able to hit in bunches against him and thus put up a lot of runs without getting a lot of baserunners.

The common suggestion is that Sophie just doesn't pitch well from the stretch, or he is tipping his pitches whilst in the stretch. Another suggestion has been, since he gives up a lot of runs in the 1st inning, that he needs a better warm-up routine.

Either way, there's obviously something wrong with his mechanics that need to be tweaked. Sophie just hasn't been the same pitcher that dominated AAA and the White Sox last year.

Additionally...
Given his WHIP, K/9, HR/9 innings stats, you'd normally expect AReyes to have an ERA around league average, since his stats in those categories are relatively close to league average. In other words, if he wasn't giving up hits/runs in bunches, we'd be getting a league-average performance out of him.

I just did the math...
Anthony's CERA (component ERA) is 4.11. Essentially, this means that, based on the number of walks/hits/hit batters, Anthony should have a 4.11. The fact that his actualy ERA is 6.08 indicates that batters are hitting him in bunches a TON.

I know this is beating a dead horse, but I'm just showing that Anthony really is capable of Suppan-like numbers, and they really need to focus on helping him get himself out of jams. I believe PECOTA projected him to have a 3.81 ERA this year, and he could certainly do that if he can work from the stretch better.

Liam, VORP, and Johnny
Thanks for the input/data fellas.  Obviously we could go very in depth if we wanted to truly find the answer.  (Breaking down each inning, etc.)

From what I can tell, based on the information all of you provided, and based on how many earned runs he allowed, we could have potentially won 5 of those games (if we say that in games Reyes allowed 3 runs or less we could have come back and won - if we want to argue 4 runs allowed, this number increases to 7 potential wins).  I say potentially, because there's many factors:  Cardinals cold hitting in the month of April, pitchers we were facing (lefties and Oswalt), any possible errors, etc.

Oswalt's always given us trouble, so let's throw him out.  That leaves 4 games, near as I can tell:
apr-16 PIT 2-3 3R, 3ER, 7IP by Snell
MAY 2 @MIL 0-4 3R, 3ER, 3IP by Capuano
MAY 7  COL 2-3 2R, 2ER, 3rd R scored in 9th
MAY 13 @SD 0-3 3R, 3ER, 7 IP by Germano

I'd like to argue we could have won all these games.  Obviously in the Colorado game, we almost did - run scored in the 9th ends the game.  In the 2 shutouts, there was no run support.  In the last remaining game (Pittsburgh), we lost by 1 run to 7 innings of Ian Snell.

I agree - he's gotten rocked for a bunch of hits/runs at one time in each game, and his current ERA is telling of that.  And in those games, I'd say it was his pitching that lost those games (or contributed to the loss).  But the man's got 3 shutouts by the other team against him - 2 of which he allowed 3 runs or less.  In 7 of his losses, we've only scored 3 runs or less (throw out Oswalt as above, and it's 6).

Going solely off his gamelog, we failed to score in 3 of his losses.  I still say that if he'd gotten SOME run support, we'd have won 2 of them.  And that's just the shutouts.  Potentially, he could be 4 and 5 (one loss worse than Wainwright), but instead he's 0 and 9.

As you said VORP, he's doing something to allow those runs in bunches. Something is the matter, and hopefully they spot it and fix it in Memphis.

But I still don't buy the fact he's solely on the hook for some of those losses.

it's less detail than you all posted but posted it a day or so ago and no takers on it...it's funny cause it's almost the same thought; however from someone whose not a huge reyes guy...

I don't see hwo moving him to AAA helps build confidence, but as many of you say it's dunc and TLR's fault for his struggles so maybe he'll regain his aceness?

1 more thing
I alos asked and really want to know this..there is a theory that he was the man in AAA and then struggled when he got to the show due to the change in philosophy...the question is 2 fold...
  1. What was his walks and innings like in AAA? I really don't knwo and would like to know if the signs were there.
  2. Couldn't the change in philosophy thing happen to any or all AAA guys coming to the big show? I think to some extent the orginization should implement it's ideals on all levels not completly change guys when they get to certain levels; however everyone will have some adjustments to make.

At Memphis
Reyes
2005 - 128.2 IP 105H 55R 13HR 34BB 136K
2006 - 84.0 IP 70H 27R 9HR 11BB 82K

--------H9--HR9--BB9--K9--WHIP
2005 - 7.34-0.91-2.38-9.51-1.08
2006 - 7.50-0.96-1.18-8.79-0.96
STL06- 8.86-?.??-3.59-7.59-1.38
STL07- 8.94-?.??-3.22-6.97-1.35

The loses can be negated by the peripherals, which are on par with some of the other pitchers.  However, what is indefensible is Reyes 'laying down' any time he gets into trouble.  I know he isn't doing it on purpose, perhaps he just gets nervous, but if you throw your best pitch and have the kind of failure he has, that is one thing.  When you turn into crap anytime runners get on, that's another.

I hope he is back in a hurry and they fix whatever hiccup he has in his game that is causing these failures.

thanks for that
i got some of it. I have always been alarmed at his walks. He doesnt go deep in games therefor 3-4 walks in 5-6 innings can be alot. Even if he doesnt give up alot of hits the walks can kill.

It's a bogus argument
Yes, it's true that the team was unlucky, or wasn't hitting well enough, to have not won some of those games. But that's not to say that Reyes' record should be that much better than it is. Even allowing for some comebacks that didn't happen, Reyes couldn't keep himself in the game long enough to be the pitcher of record.

Bottom line, Reyes wasn't demoted for his record, he was demoted for his crappy pitching.

Rolen left the game
feeling 'fuzzy'.  Mild concussion, Tony says he was fine to drive home.

I really hope that he didn't drive home.  I'd hope that this team would get a car and driver for a $12m investment that might have brain damage.
