ah, the nl central: such a silly little division. here are the standings since may 9, right before the cardinals embarked upon their 2-7 trip to socal and detroit:

W L PCT GB
hou 5 6 .455 ---
stl 4 7 .364 1
chi 4 7 .364 1
mil 4 8 .364 1.5
pitt 4 8 .364 1.5
cin 3 9 .250 2.5

that's right, folks: during one of their most discouraging stretches of play in this century, st louis lost ground to only one team in the division --- and only 1 game, at that. this is not a fluke. here are the nl central standings over each team's last 162 games:

W L PCT GB
mil 80 82 .494 ---
hou 79 83 .488 1
stl 74 88 .457 6
pitt 72 90 .444 8
cin 72 90 .444 8
chi 69 93 .426 11

this reminds me of one of those municipal races in which every one of the candidates sizes up his/her opponents and smiles inwardly: what a bunch of mediocrities. how can i possibly lose? my apologies to any of you who happen to be municipal officeholders --- but if you are one, as long as i have your attention could you please see to it that my g*ddamn alley gets paved? . . .. um, uh-oh waitaminute i just remembered something: my brother ran for his township council last year. and i have a cousin who served three terms on his local school board. and my wife sits on our city's Parks and Rec board . . . . . okay, so this metaphor doesn't apply to every municipal race across america. only to some of them.

i happen to think the brewers are pretty good this year, and the cubs are probably better than their record; that said, it wouldn't take much for the cardinals to get back into striking position. for all the disasters that have befallen them this spring, they're only 6 games out in the loss column as of this morning --- not exactly light-years behind. with a win this afternoon, they can get their record since josh hancock was buried back to .500.

but let's not get ahead of ourselves. one game at a time; they've got a long way to come back.

edmonds' power stroke returned from the dead last night, the single most encouraging event since --- well, since his other 2007 homer, which occurred one month and one day ago. but last night's was different than the jet-stream-blown shot he launched at wrigley: he yanked this one high and deep to right, his first extra-base hit to right field since last season. i've been waiting to see that . . . . no, to tell the truth i quit waiting a few weeks ago. i had given up. but then, i gave up on jimmy last year 'round about july 1; he hit 9 homers that month. in the midst of the streak, i got kinda gushy-crushy on edmonds, as even the most macho of us will do from time to time:

damn, but it's good to have edmonds back. it's as if he did more or less the same thing as clemens -- took the first three months of the season off to conserve finite physical resources. . . . . it's not just that his stats are better -- he looks like a great player again. all three of his homers this month came off that trademark edmonds uppercut, where he reaches out and paddles the ball high and deep to right field -- like a tennis player yanking a cross-court backhand. he's taking his full rip again. i figured that we'd never see that swing again . . . . it's as if we've been working with the demo-only version of edmonds, with all the more robust features disabled. then suddenly the disk arrives in the mail and you load it in, and you find out the program can do all this stuff you never realized it was capable of.
i gave up on edmonds again right before the playoffs, when (battling post-concussion syndrome) he struck out in 8 of his 15 september at-bats; but in october he scored 8 runs and knocked in a team-best 10. he'll never be the player he was, but maybe --- maybe --- he's not entirely washed up.

since he called out the team on may 13, after the cards' lifeless 3-0 loss to padres rookie justin germano, edmonds is hitting .300 / .417 / .500 --- it's only a 9-game split, but it's so nice to see such gaudy numbers that i couldn't resist. in fact, what the hell --- here are 9-game splits for most of the team, juxtaposed against the 34-game splits they opened the season with. "OPS diff" lists the differential in each player's OPS, pre and post may 13:

through 5/13 since 5/13 OPS diff
eckstein .207 / .282 / .234 .500 / .516 / .633 +633
edmonds .208 / .274 / .264 .300 / .417 / .500 +379
molina .264 / .337 / .310 .400 / .444 / .560 +357
duncan .284 / .371/ .474 .333 / .355/ .800 +310
pujols .248 / .347 / .426 .382 / .462 / .559 +248
rightfielders .198 / .255 / .275 .324 / .361 / .353 +184
rolen .204 / .283 / .306 .250 / .364 / .357 +132
TEAM .234 / .301 / .322 .323 / .374 / .467 +218

yeah yeah yeah; it's only 9 games, a random blip. to a man dying of hunger, one crumb of bread seems like a whole loaf; in the nl central, one crumb can be worth a few games in the standings. it's how you survive in this silly ol' division --- one crumb at a time.

that Edmonds homer
i rewatched it several times last night -- I even thought at one point I saw him pump his right fist right afterward.  It looked like the game 6 homer off of Dan Miceli -- without the double fist-pump.  It was positively beautiful and, like you, I wasn't sure I'd ever see it again.  That looked like the Edmonds of 3 years ago.  Maybe, just maybe...

I did the fist pump...
and I don't usually get that excited.  (I worry too much to allow those small moments of joy.)

I keep an eye on the top, but I really think you have to look at the standing one ladder rung at a time.  Must get past next team...

you mean one crumb . . . .
one crumb at a time, not one rung. but your point is well taken.

Edmonds
When Edmonds first came to St. Louis he had the reputation of being a guy that could be hard to get along with.  I don't know if that is true or not.  But it has been really cool getting to watch his maturation from a human highlight reel into a veteran leader who is not afraid to step up and say what needs to be said or do what needs to be done to get this team going in the right direction.

Here's to the rest of the summer...
Ok, so it's only a 2 game winning streak, but it got me looking ahead a bit.  I think that the standings as of June 8 will be something to look at.  Right now, the brewers are 10 games over at home and 1 under on the road.  After Monday, they start a 10 game home stand that is followed up by 19 out of 28 on the road.  Their road trip consist of the Twins and Tigers, whereas ours, beginning on the 12th, consists of the Royals and A's.  I have been frustrated at times this yr but have not come close to folding it up.  I kept a lot more faith than most last year and was rewarded w/ the first WS Championship of my memory (born in '80).  I would love to be w/in 3-5 games when July 27th gets here and we then proceed to play the Brewers 8 times in a 21 game stretch.  Granted that they may not even be the team to beat at that point, but we're close enough to every one else that we, in escence, control our own destiny w/ the rest of the division.

It's really amazing to me how many
really ugly guys there are in baseball.  Last year I was at Camden Yards for O's-Indians.  We crashed some box seats late in the game, right behind the Cleveland dugout, and at one time or another I got a real good look at about 12 Indians players ... and all but 2 of them hit 11 on the ugly scale.

I'm the starving guy that gets a crumb
and wants to know where the steak is.

I'm still disappointed about the two games on the road trip we gave back.  Actually, 4 games.  No way should we have lost those last 2 games to Detroit and no way should we have lost those last 2 games in Los Angeles.  Both of those games were given away, not taken.

How good would those 4 loses look in the win column right now?  22-21, 2nd place in the NL Central and two games back in the loss column, 4 games back overall.

But I'll take these tiny bits of life we are getting now.  Just don't give anymore games away, ok?

We aren't very good.

If...
you counted all the games we should have won this year that we ended up losing, we'd be like two games out of first. I'm not talking about just the four games that HL mentioned, but also about that silly loss to the Pirates (?) where they walked in a run in the 9th when they didn't to...another loss to the Cubs where they had the winning runs on in the 9th and didn't do anything...I'm sure there are others.

This team hasn't produced in the clutch and hasn't had the best of luck either.

by matt reeder on May 24, 2007 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what
about all the games at the beginning of the season we should have lost and ended up winning?  I think that we're in a decent spot all things considered.

by eglasier on May 24, 2007 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't look at this
as a good team that gave away some games.  Giving away games is how bad teams earn the label "bad."  IOW, giving away games is a feature of a bad team, not a bug in a good team.

by MdRedbirdFreak on May 24, 2007 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lost opportunities
I think at least three of those losses were due to very bad managing decisions by TLR.  I think TLR was a little off his rocker on that road trip and caused damage the team had no power over.  They started to fight offensively and he dug in his heels with regard to when to change pitchers in a way that other managers would not.  His stubbornes sometimes helps us to win and sometimes it helps us to lose.  But I wouldn't saddle the team players with those losses.  Then he lashed out at a number of players rather than admitting his own role in the losses.  I usually respect Tony, but not over the last two weeks.

by nycardfan on May 24, 2007 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hardcore, i agree w/ you re wasted opportunities
at the very least, they coulda / shoulda won saturday in detroit and wednesday in l.a.; there have been a half-dozen other flagrant missed opportunities in the first two months. how about that first game vs the rockies (where tyler johnson walked in the winning run)? or the 12-inning game in san francisco (where pujols was out trying to "steal" home)? or the time they loaded the bases in the 9th vs pgh / sal torres and had duncan / pujols coming up . . . but couldn't score?

even just 2 more wins (and, accordingly, a couple fewer losses) would make a big differernce right about now. but insofar as they have a minus 55 run differential this season, we probably ought to be thankful things aren't worse than they are. in the nl east they would be 10 games out of first and 7.5 games out of second --- dead and buried. in any american league division they'd be absolute toast. it's very lucky that we can still sit here and hope for good things.

by lboros on May 24, 2007 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Better to be good or lucky
this team hasn't been particularly either.  We were actually lucky in a game or two in Pittsburgh earlier this year, but it seems that we've left a lot of baserunners in scoring position and a lot of wins out on the field so far this year.

I guess what gives me hope is that (based on past experience and performances) this team hasn't played it's best baseball yet.  The NL East and West have done the Cardinals a huge favor by bring the Brewers back to Earth a bit.

It's just enough to, even still below .500 and 8 games out, give me hope that everything can break right and this team is 'above average' enough to challenge for that division lead.

Gotta win games like today, though.

We aren't very good.

the site upgrade --- my apologies for that. it has only been, what, a month and a half since it was promised? but i'm in the same boat as you, kind of wondering --- whatever happened to that? i last inquired about 3 weeks ago; i'll lodge another inquiry.

re luhnow --- i e-mailed him the questions at 4:30 o'clock CDT tuesday, a total of 30 questions; haven't heard back yet but i think it's premature to follow up with him and ask for an ETA. i'm sure he will respond, but it might take a little time; it is, after all, very close to draft day.

if i haven't heard back by next monday, i'll check in w/ him to see where things stand.

All righties
Al-righty then, let's take down this lefty.  We've started doing a lot better against lefties in these last nine games - here's to that continuing.

Anyone else find it an interesting part of our current adventure that the lineup from day-to-day changes so much and is so unpredictable?  It's a long way from 2004, but in an odd way it's kind of fun.....

I'd like to see Ludwick
with a chance to finally play again, jump all over some fastballs.  The team has had a different hero (sans Duncan) each of the last two games.  Time for that unexpected power bat to hit 1 or 2 over the wall.

foul balls
that is the other side of the coin. According to Gameday, all of the foul balls were pitches up in the strike zone over the plate. In years past, he would have pounded one.

Lots of offense
for the Cards, however they've left a lot of runners stranded.  Miles 3-3, Yadi and Gooch with 2 hits.  Looper has been brilliant.  Only run was a windblow homer (wind is blowing to left 20 mph)

by stltrav09 on May 24, 2007 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cards have stranded a few too many runners
thanks to the awfulness that is Ryan Ludwick. Loop has pitched excellent minus one pitch to Bautista that wouldn't of even been a HR if it weren't for the wind. We need to capitalize right here.
Miller sucks.

Is there a site that has hitting splits as a starter vs. off the bench? For some reason I think of So as getting tons of hits, but last night I look up at the scoreboard to see him batting .224 So just when I start rolling my eyes at him, he gets a handful of hits again today. What gives?

I went to a game in Atlanta recently and the Padres enjoyed back-to-back doubles where Andruw should have caught them both.  He's overweight and taking questionable routes to balls.  He will not be worth what he'll get offered this winter.

Anyone think LaRussa got fooled
and thought that Tracy was going to bring in a lefty in that situation (since one did start to run in out of the bullpen).

Tony went out and argued that since the BP pitcher had left the bullpen, that he was 'in the game' so to speak.

I think Tony sent Speezer up to ph thinking the lefty was coming in and left Edmonds and Duncan on the bench.

Cause, otherwise...it made no sense.  Use Edmonds there, put the pitcher in Ludwick's spot, then let Duncan pinch hit for him in the 8th.

Unbelievable
If the tow truck driver or motorist had died in the accident as well, would Mr. Hancock Sr. be suing their estates?  Did the tow truck operator sue JH's estate for damage to his truck?  Or the rental car company for their loss of a new SUV?  Perhaps the cell phone company should be named defendant as well...

A very unfortunate epilogue to a real tragedy.

well,
whether you think it's good law or not, courts have routinely held that the owners of bars and restaurants who continue to serve people after they're obviously drunk can be liable when that person then gets hurt afterward. according to the law, bartenders have a responsibility to cut people off once it's clear they've had enough.

here's the part of the complaint i don't get: "The intoxication of Joshua Morgan Hancock on said occasion was involuntary." um, what? are they saying someone slipped him some rohypnol?

I think that
this only works in court in cases in which a 3rd party is injured or killed.  In other words, if the tow truck driver had been struck by Hancock's car, his family could sue Shannon's b/c they are partly culpable.  I don't think (and I'm not a lawyer so I could be wrong) that the family of the person who had been drinking has a claim against the bar/restaurant.

bloody hell
he got out of it. . .

let's not go through that again.  I'm not ready to had a one-run game to Welle.

by azruavatar on May 24, 2007 3:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe that guy's a good pickup
he looked pretty steady right there --- ahead of every hitter, changed speeds pretty good.

by lboros on May 24, 2007 3:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

bud smith pitched a no hitter
and even Wellemeyer's gonna get some outs from time to time.  He's fine to soak up innings but i think it's early to trust him with one-run leads.

by azruavatar on May 24, 2007 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You never know
I doubt he was pitching in too many 1-run leads in Kansas City.

Badumching!

We aren't very good.

by Hardcore Legend on May 24, 2007 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hey, if ryan franklin can be a setup man
why not wellemeyer? i saw nothing but good pitches in that inning

by lboros on May 24, 2007 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well
Ryan Franklin BB/9 in the majors = 2.74
Todd Wellemeyer BB/9 in the majors = 6.14

I mean WOW. 6 batters every 9 innings?  They pull TJ cause he didn't have great command and replace him with a pitcher that walks 6 per 9.

Franklin never struck out a lot of batters but he had a significantly better WHIP.  He needed to learn to keep the ball down (DD's expertise).  Wellemeyer can't doesn't have command of his pitches and I don't think that's something DD can fix.

Not that I'm totally sold on Ryan Franklin = setup man.

by azruavatar on May 24, 2007 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed --- the walks are terrible
but you can coach a guy to improve his control. you can't coach him to throw 95.

i'm not saying the guy should be handed the setup role. but, as i said, i didn't see anything troubling in that inning. he threw 12 pitches today --- 10 were strikes. since joining the cardinals, he has thrown a total of 78 pitches (including today) --- 59 have been strikes.

by lboros on May 24, 2007 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think if we give him time
He could be good, I just don't have confidence in him yet.

Let Dunc work with him for a bit.

On with the youth movement!

by Hardcore Legend on May 24, 2007 3:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i guess they didn't want to do the 4 out save
but, frankly. I'd rather have Izzy pitch to Bay (obviously the most dangerous hitter) and Welle close if that's what it comes to.

by azruavatar on May 24, 2007 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's not how Tony runs a bullpen
Everyone has their "role" and Izzy is the 9th inning guy

by Valatan on May 24, 2007 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish it wasn't though
Welley just gave us .210 WPA and it's at 96% total as Izzy gets the "save".

by plh903 on May 24, 2007 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

o, i know
TLR loves his bullpen roles.

that doesn't make it right though.

The leverage in that situation was over 3.  That should have your best pitcher in the game not someone with an ERA around 9.

by azruavatar on May 24, 2007 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think
he only pitched 22 pitches last night.
On with the youth movement!

Another late game 4-pitch walk to Rolen.
Wow.

But we're due for a baserunning mistake.

in the dugout?

RE: Hancock family lawsuit.
They have no case vs. the tow truck driver who was on the shoulder of the road with lights on by reports I have seen.

They probably do have a case against Shannon's since newspaper reports said a waitress there was concerned enough to offer to get him a cab. That would suggest that she recognized that he was not good to drive. Since Shannon's served him teh drinks they are respoonsible under the "dram shaop" laws if memory serves me well.

yup
if the hancock family can establish that he was visibly intoxicated and yet continued to be served by shannon's employees, they can be found responsible.

I'm sorry but
where has the rule "responsibility for one's own actions" gone?

by stltrav09 on May 24, 2007 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed
i'm not commenting on whether the law is right or wrong - but that IS the law.

of course..
The waitress' cab offer wouldn't necessarily imply that they served him after realizing how drunk he was -- i.e., from their point of view, it could've been the last drink that sent him over the top.

by tomsteele on May 24, 2007 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
and the bar should be held responsible for their actions.  If they continued to serve an obviously intoxicated man and then allowed him to drive a car, they should be held responsible for those actions.

by chuckb on May 24, 2007 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hancock
From what I heard, the restaurant was serving him free drinks.  I'm sure that wouldn't help.

by gdowdy3 on May 24, 2007 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

don't know Missouri law
but in most places, they would be liable to the person who the drunk driver injured.  These laws are usually written so that a person can't get wasted, hurt himself/others/some property, and then say to the bar "you made me drunk -- give me some money"

Feel for Pirates fans
they've got to be thinking at this point: "So who CAN we beat?"  If you can't beat the hapless Cardinals, Kip Wells or two relievers turned starters...you are in bad juju.

"The Cardinals are coming tra-la-la-la
The Cardinals are coming tra-la-la-la"

Some of my earliest Cardinal memories are of Harry Caray singing those words after every game in early September 1963. The Man was retiring at the end of the year, the Cards had started the season in first place then were passed by the Dodgers and even though still in 2nd place were far behind the Bums.

Then the Birds got hot. They went off on a 10+ game winning streak in September to cut the lead and every day after they won Harry would start singing. Of course all of us fans were going crazy mostly because we wanted Stan to make it to the World Series just one more time, none more so than my dad and grandfather both of whom were at Musial's first game. They went to every game as there was no way they would miss Stan's last game, and they often let me go with them.

Alas, the magic ended and the Bums couldn't be caught, but it was a crazy, fun few weeks.

I remember Harry
Singing the same thing in late 60's, where I became a Cardinal fan listening to the radio at my Dad's feet.  Harry and Jack in the same booth.  Boy, those were the days.......
