Game Fourty Three Open Thread--23 May 2007

Snell

Kippers

4-2, 2.76

1-8, 6.75

Putting up the game thread a little early today--I have some yard work to do, and might not be back in time to actually have this up before first pitch.

If you're looking for some pregame entertainment, check out this fjm post, one of the funniest I've read in a while.

We've got yet another good ol' matchup against the Buccos, thanks to our lovely unbalanced schedule.     First, does this count as a 'revenge game', thanks to Wells' former prominence with the Pirates?  Second, how long do you think Ian Snell can keep up his current pace?  His peripherals look decent, but not spectacular like his 2.76 ERA.  This will, at least, be a test of the newly resurgent offense.

Not to mention a test of the disastrous recent stretch of pitching by Kip H. "Kippersley" Wells.

Interesting...
Joe Strauss chat...

Two things jump out:

First, that fake knee injury to PW will likely require surgery and might end his career. Sorry for questioning you on that one PW...

Second, in a comment that I believe many commentators on this blog would agree with, Tom Bannister34 declares that one Albert Pujols every seven years is not enough. The farm system has to produce better... That got me thinking, if all your system did was produce one Pujols every seven years and nothing else - you had to comb the waiver wire and the indy leagues for bench players and fill ins - wouldn't you have the best farm system in baseball? I think you would...

by guayzimi on May 23, 2007 5:39 PM EDT   0 recs

The hard part about that comment
Is that he may have been saying that we need to produce more than one real "star" every seven years. Using Pujols as the example is unfair, as someone like him only shows up once every few decades. When you start thinking about players produced by the Cardinals system in the last 10 years, the first two players that come to mind that were anywhere even close to Pujols were Drew and Ankiel.

Hmm, let's see, Drew, do I even want to bring on the flame war that would crop up if I used him as the example? There are few fans that don't hold on to at least some sort of disdain for his career with St. Louis and beyond.

Ankiel? The guy that should have been unhittable? The guy that gave up on his talent? (/sarcasm) All of the sidebars and diatribes that would pop up if he was suggested would make this kind of discussion impossible.

Guys that came before these two aren't really pertinent to the conversation and everybody that has come since are either well short of star status or too early to be truly defined as such.

I do think that the Cardinals as an organization need to do a better job at producing All-Star level talent. Hell, anybody decent that can get to the majors before their 27th bithday. (The last bit was a bit of an exaggeration, but they can still do better than they have been.)

Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time.

Haren, Polanco, Reyes, Wainwright, Duncan
Matt Morris, and I know I'm missing a few.  Reyes, Duncan and Wainwright are clearly too young to determine where they're going to end up.  but the other three have been valuable major leaguers for the majority of their careers.  Throwing Pujols and Drew on top, and I think you can say that the farm system has done pretty well.

The main complaint is that, outside of Drew and Ankiel, they've never had a highly touted, sure-thing prospect.  But whatever.  Pujols has been better than every one of those sure-thing prospects in recent years, with the only possible exceptions being A-Rod and Griffey, Jr.

Tom Bannister34 and
everyone else are spoiled. One Pujols every 10-15 years, much less 7, is a rarity, so expecting someone to be the next Albert is reaching, IMO.  The kid came out of nowhere and became an instant star. How often does that happen?

How will
it go? Either Kip will be fired up to beat his old team or he will fold like a beat dog. Here's hoping for the former!! C'mon Kip, show us that vaunted "stuff" you supposedly have. GO BIRDS!!

If Robert Wells tonight
has command, he'll be unhittable.  If he continues to be a guy just throwing junk towards the plate, hoping it lands between the two batter's boxes, we're going to need the new offense to put a 10-spot on the board.
We aren't very good.

Yadi also took a bit of a beating
last night behind the plate.  I remember thinking to myself that he'd more than likely get tomorrow off.

Is Juan batting 4th 'just because' or is there a legit reason?

We aren't very good.

he only threw one fastball that inning
it was the first pitch to ECK. rest of his pitches were sliders/cures. if the boys don't lay off the junk, they probably won't get another hit off of him tonight.

Guys...........................
I need 4 tickets to the LAA game on the 10th of June.

What or how would be the best route for us to take in getting tickets.  We wanted tickets to Homers Landing for the buffet and free beer but I hear that is sold out for the year.

We are all in Springfield, MO.

Any help would be appreciated guys.  Thanks!
