thompson

tomko

1-0, 4.03

1-3, 4.33

[ed]lboros was on the run so I've posted the gamethread on his behalf. I just checked my email, sorry if I'm a tad tardy.

only twice in a 10-year career has brett tomko posted a better-than-league-average era --- 1997 (his rookie season) and 2004. but to look at his list of comps at Baseball Prospectus, you'd think he's an all-star: jim lonborg, ron darling, doyle alexander, brett saberhagen, and rick wise all make the top 20. he has made 4 quality starts in 6 outings this year.

a few quick hits:

is it me
or does thompson's photo make him look younger each year?

if i didn't know, i'd guess he's 17 in that picture.

$2 million...
seems like too much.

I believe we sent Tino to the D-Rays in '04 when he had $7.5 million left on his contract, and we ate all but a million. And all we got was Evan Rust and PTBNL who never amounted to anything.

Tino was less crappy in '04 than Weaver is now, imo...

they both suck really bad
the difference is the Cardinals are most likely mired in a very long in-season slump.  The nationals can look forward to the possibility of stringing together some 100 loss seasons.

by azruavatar on May 14, 2007 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about the White Sox or Reds
White Sox are as helpless as we are hitting and the Reds are already 8 games below .500.

Our ERA is 4.10, middle of the pack.  Our defense is middle of the pack in all of baseball.

The Rangers and Royals also get consideration.

Our offense is terrible right now, that's a given, however we are atleast 'average' in the pitching and defense areas.

Walk your dog, not Pujols.

by Hardcore Legend on May 14, 2007 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

O I agree
there are several teams that are having some ugly seasons.  I think you can draw parallels between all of them.  I think that the Nationals are the only ones (even including the Royals) that could post some consecutive 100 loss seasons.

It's all kinda fungible -- any team low in the standings be it Rangers, White Sox, Reds or Cardinals will have some apt comparisons that can be made with the Nationals.

His mechanics are way way off. A good hitting coach would be able to work things out with him, it wouldn't take much. Too bad the cardinals don't have a good hitting coach.

Question: How much credit do we give
Hal McRae for the progress that Duncan has shown this year and last?  I know there's a fire Hal contingent out there (I'm on the fence) but I wonder if we don't overlook some of the progress made by younger players this year. . .

by azruavatar on May 14, 2007 10:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Little things
Its the little mechanical things that are causing Pujols and Rolen to struggle. To me, a good hitting coach would be able to see that and fix it.

by stl3bagger on May 14, 2007 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

we must be watching different batters
because I think Rolen and Pujols look utterly lost at the plate.  I don't think it's a matter of some quaint little mechanical issues.

by azruavatar on May 14, 2007 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

excellent question
I think it's fair to give him some, although you wonder how much he just soaked up from his dad....perhaps it was a motivation thing....once he got up here and had a taste of The Big Time he got hungry.

As far as McRae goes, I still have a very bad taste in my mouth from the whole how-many-hits-did-Rolen-have thing.

by nota bene on May 14, 2007 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know
it seams he's really good with young guys, but has no idea how to help the vets. maybe the Cards need two hitting coaches if they don't dump Hal soon.

Chris was quick to point out in spring Hal did more for him that the few weeks he spent with Big Mac over the winter. so maybe we give him a lot. I just don't know.

by gdm426 on May 14, 2007 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

imo Rolen and Pujols
aren't the guys a hitting coach is for unless they want to completely rework their swing.  They can watch video as well/better than McRae because they know what they were thinking during the at bat.  If Rolen hasn't learned to make adjustments to his swing by now he wouldn't be the middle of the order hitter we've seen the last few years.

Fantasy Help
Alright.. I want Duncan real bad.  I've tried everything to pry him away from this guy in my league but he won't budge.  I'm almost positive I can get him straight up for Sheffield.  Question is though, do you guys think it's worth it?  He's not producing this year and he is striking out a lot.

What do you think?  Give up Sheff for Dunc?

I'm trying to get JJ Hardy for him by giving up Jack Wilson as well but I'm not so sure that will work.

thanks guys

by stltrav09 on May 14, 2007 11:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No
I wouldn't do that at all. I have Dunc in both of my leagues and if someone offered Shef, I'd take Shef.

Duncan is good, but Shef is nearly guaranteed to put up solid numbers.

I'd try to get Duncan in a package deal. Maybe a 2-2 involving Shef.

I'm skeptical of thompson as a starter
because the minute his command waviers and he leaves anything up in the zone, he gets hit hard.  His pitches aren't good enough that he can miss spots.  He'll have some decent outings and he's probably fine as the 6th man in the rotation but he's gonna get rocked from time to time too.

All this trade talk
if the Cardinals can get back into contention (which in essence means going 10-5 to close the month of May), you know who may end up being availible?

Adam Dunn.

The Reds have a $13 M option on him next year and then nothing and I'm sure they are having doubts about locking him up longterm as he really isn't progressing as anything more than a slam or k hitter.

They are falling terribly out of contention, even for only being the month of May and have outfield depth with Hamilton, Freel and a healthy Griffey.  Not to mention, I'm sure they would rather spend the $15m+ it will take to get him locked up long term on a better defensive OF that isn't as bad during stretches as he is.

Just a thought.

nice thought
but the Reds would never trade Dunn to the Cards. no matter how much it's going to cost them. even before Castellini got there they said they would never help out the Cards by being fair trading partners. and now Castellini wants nothing more than to beat his old partners. and giving the Cards Dunn would be exactly the opposite of beating the Cards.

and even if they changed their minds, they would want 2-4 of the Cards best prospects, plus Anthony or Adam. and we already have a better player than Dunn in the outfield, he's called Chris Duncan. he can hit for average and power, plus he can play a very good D. something Dunn has never been able to do.

as great as it would be, 1 it's not likely, 2 even it if was it would cost too much. 3 we already have Duncan. personaly I think Dunn needs to play first or go to the American League. he is a liability in the outfield.

One other Red that may be availible
even though more doubtful is none other than Ken Griffey Jr.

He is going to make 12.5M in 2008 and has a club option of $16.5M in 2009 with a $4M buyout.  There is no way in the world they pick up Griffey's 2009 option.

If the Reds organization really is going in the tank as quickly as it appears (9 games under .500 in middle of May), perhaps Junior is looking to play for a team that could get him back into the playoffs.

Are the Cardinals that organization?  I don't know.  Like I said, go 10-5 to close out the month and you are right back in the divisional race.  The Brewers are already showing signs of cracking against tougher NL opponents (2-6 against teams above .500).

Griffey would be a Larry Walker style 'plug' in RF for a potential 2008 and 2009 seasons.

I doubt Griffey will retire anything other than a Red or a DH for some AL team, however anything I guess is possible.

Griffey has always said about his 500th HR that if he had to do it anywhere other than Cincy, he wanted it to be in St. Louis (and it was).

I've always loved Griffey but would be scared
of sinking that kind of money given his age and injury history (at least for the past several years). He seems like he could easily be another Jim Edmonds in the outfield. That would be a lot of money invested in two aging once-great CFs next year. I know he's hitting the shit out of the ball now, but he's getting up there and his recent history scares me.

Having said that, if he stays healthy this summer and we're really legitimately in contention come July, I'd love to see him and his bat in Cardinal red. He and Jimmy could both retire as Birds in 2008.

He seems like such a nice guy, and he was so classy to the fan that caught his 500th homer here. If I had a time machine (and some sort of magical super-doctor; stay with me here...) I'd fix his injury problems in Cincy so we'd be talking about him beating Aaron's record, not ol' balloon-head.

The REAL best player of his generation
In the mid 90s, I'd rather have Griffey than Bonds or Frank Thomas.

I've always thought JR might end up in the STL
for the very reason's you mentioned. but he might also go to the AL and DH his final years. his health is the only problem other than the crazy money he would be due in 08. ever since he came home to the natti he's been cursed. I've always thought he needed to leave, and if he's healthy, ther's no other place I'd rather see him play than in the STL.

the Cards would deff want to redue his money, or have the natti pick up some of the money for 08 & 09. I can see JR wearing the Birds on the Bat easier than I can picture Dunn wearing them.

am I'm an idiot
I'm almost 99% sure Carl H. Lindner used to be an owner with the Cards. not Castellini. I don't think he's ever left the natti. his family got rich by owning a food store/distribution center near the river. oh he also sold the Bungles the land that they built their football stadium on.
