retroactive to April 2...
... so he'd be eligible to come off the DL a week from today. if he's okay, he'll only miss one more start (after Tuesday's).

Carpenter
Not to be too pessimistic, but I don't think the date Carp went on the DL is going to end up being very relevant.  I've got this feeling that he's going to be gone for a month or two.  In my completely unscientific opinion, (but as someone who has has chips in his ankle) the symptoms sound like bone spurs or chips.

Hope for chips.  They're generally less indicative of a chronic, arthritic sort of situation.

You can't really bring up Narveson to help fill in here.  He's out of options, so sending him back down would be problematic, especially if he pitched well.

Narve ready for a shot
>>You can't really bring up Narveson to help fill in here.  He's out of options, so sending him back down would be problematic, especially if he pitched well.  <<

This is the chance for somebody in the minors to get a look.  These opportunities to jump into the STL rotation come up rarely.  Narve has done time in AAA.  He's ready for his shot.  That's all he should be in Memphis for--waiting for a shot at the show.  There is no guaranty that Narve will have an opportunity to get starts for the big club later this year or next year no matter how well he pitches in Memphis.  Hope Keisler does something with the opportunity.

by jjray on Apr 9, 2007 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Narveson's Options
I understand what you're saying, and I sort of agree, but I just think Narveson would benefit from getting some more innings in Triple A.  If you really think he's ready to stick all year, then that's fine.  But if he's only going to be helping out temporarily, the Cards would basically be trying to sneak him through for the second time this spring.  I just think they should get a better read on him with consistent time in Memphis before they take a chance on losing him outright just to get a look.

My Gameday has choked with a one strike call on Adam LaRoche in the first.  Grrrrrr.

But regardless, I wanted to vent about how craptastic I find the new Gameday.

I want to glance at Gameday and immediately know the situation.

What I don't want is to know the all the pitch locations of the previous 4 batters.

I sure hope Blooper can get past this 0-1 count on Adam LaRoche and get out of the 1st....

I wonder if the Wilson hit was worth it
Maybe some will write "who cares?" but pinch-hitting Wilson for Edmonds in game 7 of the season will not make Edmonds happy.  I'm glad Wilson got a big double but maybe Edmonds could've gotten a hit.  Does the hit validate LaRussa's decision?  What is the cost if it creates friction in the dugout or if Edmonds feels like LaRussa lacks confidence in him?  Maybe some will say that Edmonds should get over it and hit better.  In principle, I agree but that's not necessarily reality and, because it is a long season, maybe the cost is greater than the benefit.

OTOH, maybe it helps Wilson more in terms of perceived faith in him than it hurts Edmonds.  Plus, we got a 2 run cushion we badly needed.  Just kind of thinking out loud here.

by chuckb on Apr 9, 2007 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

I agree
I didn't like the move either. However, if Edmonds can't handle being removed in one game he has problems. If this constantly happens then he can start getting pissed but its one game, if you can't handle it give me your 10 mil. a year and I will play CF and won't care if I'm removed for a pinch hitter once in a while.

by stl3bagger on Apr 9, 2007 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

this was more about damaso marte
than about edmonds, imho. marte has an extreme platoon split --- he murders left-handers but is vulnerable vs right-handers. if you leave edmonds in there, you're playing to the pitcher's strenghts; if you pinch-hit, you're exploiting his weakness.

i see your point re the possible short-term vs long-term tradeoff. on the other hand, tony did a lot of platooning last season and obviously plans to continue doing so this year; might as well let edmonds get used to it now.

by lboros on Apr 9, 2007 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought there might be
something there -- maybe Wilson owns Marte or something.  I was just thinking in general -- it is just game 7 out of 162.

Maybe it can be brushed off b/c Jimmy missed most of spring or this game's more important b/c Carp's hurt or I only did it b/c Marte is so vulnerable to righties.

by chuckb on Apr 9, 2007 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Edmonds
is usually pretty self-deprecating.  I bet if asked about it he would probably shrug it off and say he would have pinch-hit for himself there, too.  who knows if that's how he really feels, though, but he's been around a long time - the move worked and helped the team.

I think if it had been the same situation, but they were down 1-0, Edmonds would have stayed in there.  I'm not sure why I think that, but I do.

LaRussa's Trying to Win Games
That was probably the last time our big men would cycle through, and we needed to come away with some runs.

If Edmonds is too much of a prima donna to be a team player, that's a problem in itself and completely independent from LaRussa's call. Personally--the Rolen fiasco notwithstanding--I won't sell Edmonds that short.

Looper's next start
It'll be Sunday, opposing Jeff Suppan.

Winning that game would be a loud statement.

In other news:
St. Louis (4/9/2007):  "Sdrone has faxed a latter to the Cardinals front office:  'I'm in!  When can Big Dunc and I set up a meetnig?'"

Not that it would surprise
anybody here, but the Sid Ponson Minnesota Experiment ain't going so well.  6 hits, 5 earned runs through four...

Watching that
I remarked to myself that however many other things change, the Sid Ponson Suckitude Factor does not. It seems a little ridiculous that the Twins aren't giving Garza a shot over him.

Garzas not ready
He'll have his time, but he's not ready.  I saw him several times last year and his inexperience was very evident.  He's got the stuff to be damn good though eventually...

Sir sid
sporting like a jerry curl mullet, and the announcers are gay..."this guys a work horse" ok yea he settled down, but if you give up 5 in 2 innings unless you pitch for the yanks O i dont carehow long you pitch its not  great...You can be a workhorse and still suck...as i say that a run scores...

Sir Sid
has now given up 8 earned on 10 hits through 5.2 innings so his ERA stands at a sparkling 12.71

Er. Considering how Looper did today, I think I'll keep our latest starter experiment. <knock on wood>

Good J-rod News
J-rod is playing center field in Memphis tonight. My guess is that they just want to give Ankiel a breather since he has started the season slow, but if anyone has any info it would be appreciated.

Interesting that John is getting a look in center. Probably not good for the Gooch/Wilson/Schu Trio.

"moderate arthritis"
and an impingement is what they're saying about Carp.

Silent Bob and you other medicine men (and women), what do you make of that?

by DCGreg on Apr 9, 2007 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

An impingement
is when the membrane lining the elbow becomes caught  in the elbow joint; it's common with athletes who perform repetitive motions (such as throwing). Usually rest and meds can clear it up, otherwise it'll be arthroscopic surgery.

sure is a fun place to watch a game...  my family goes over to four or five games a year... we're about an hour away... auto zone park is probally one of the best minor league parks in the country... right in the midle of downtown memphis...lots to do before and after the game...  cardinals are really a class act!
