Josh Hancock killed in car crash

this brings back terrible memories. my thoughts go out to his family and the team. unbeleivable that this can happen to the cardinals again. he was killed in a car crash last night. the game has been postponed. this is just unreal.

official release from the team:

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals were informed this morning by the St. Louis Police Department of the tragic death of pitcher Josh Hancock, 29, who was killed in an auto accident on westbound Highway 64/40 within the city limits.

Cardinals' Manager Tony La Russa informed Josh's father of this tragic event. Major League Baseball representatives have also been notified and tonight's 7:05 p.m. game with the Chicago Cubs has been postponed.

The Cardinals ask that all fans join the team in offering their prayers and condolences to Josh Hancock's family on this very sad day for the Cardinals and Major League Baseball.

as reported in the post-dispatch: Hancock's Ford Explorer slammed into the rear of a tow truck that was parked in the far left westbound lane shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Hancock, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.

very unfortunate.
while looking for news on this earlier this a.m., i found this post dispatch article.  it mentions how, ever since DK died,  the whole team is on eggshells  when players show up late.  pretty ironic.

thanks for the hard work josh.

i blame the cubs...

Please...
I know you're kidding, but please no more Cubs smack. They're being as kind and classy as I hope we would all be to them in a tragedy like this. Sorry, but I'm not in a humor for even mild kidding around right now. The rivalry that was so important to me yesterday is absolutely meaningless today. Thanks to you Cub fans who feel the same way and have come here in peace and humility. Your condolences mean a lot to most of us. RIP Josh.

Strange article
I remember reading that and hoping that nothing like the DK incident would happen again.  Unfortunately, it has.

I find it weird that I'm personalizing this so much.  It's not like I know him personally, but I guess after following the team so closely for the last 17+ years, it's hard not to.

Yes, I remember that article and how it brought back memories of Daryl. This is a horrible tragedy to be sure, but DK's death hit me pretty hard as he had small children and was my age when he passed.

From stltoday.com
Hancock's Ford Explorer slammed into the rear of a tow truck that was parked in the far left westbound lane shortly after 12:30 a.m.  The tow truck driver, who was seated in the vehicle at the time, was unhurt.

He told police that his emergency lights were on, and that he honked his horn when he saw the Explorer approaching in his rear view mirror, but that the Exploer didn't slow down or swerve to avoid the collision.

At the time of the accident, the tow truck driver was assisting a motorist from an earlier accident.

I try thinking
of who JH's closest friends were on the team, and I can't really say. You would think maybe TJ and Dunc and the other guys he bounced back and forth to Memphis with...tragic for all involved.

I think maybe all our on-field grousing will be a wee bit more tempered for a while. RIP.

It's tough news for us fans... and we allknow it's really terrible for his family.

But how about LaRussa... he had to call his father and let him know. Isn't this the second time now he's had to do that? And what about his teammates? Especially those young guys? They've been together now for more than a year. They won us a world series!!!!!!!!!!!! This team is gonna be hurting.

I found this shot of Josh Hancock (as a Red, in 2004) used to illustrate a pitcher's motion. To me, it's nice to have something more than the sterile headshots going around to remember who he was:

I just woke up and turned on ESPN to see a little coverage of the draft. On the scrolling bottom bar all I saw was the end of a note that said the Cards/Cubs game tonight was postponed. I thought it was a little early in the day to postpone a night game due to weather.

On another note, thanks to all the Cub fans who've come to express their thoughts and prayers.  People talk about which rivalry is the best in baseball -- I'm not sure if any Red Sox or Yankees fans would do what the Cubs fans have done if they had to deal with this sort of tragedy.  That's what makes this rivalry the best.  The Cubs and, in particular, Joe Girardi have never been forgotten by Cards fans for that June day 5 years ago.

I respctfully disagree
While I too am broken up about this, I have to admit that once I heard the details of the crash the same thoughts of DUI ran through my head.  However, to hide these details would be more of a disservice than anything.

If he was indead intoxicated behind the wheel, while it may be unconfortable to reveal a character flaw of one of our guys, the example of what can go wrong is much more valuable than saving face of an athlete.

I hope and pray that this is not the case, but if it is hopefully some will see the reality of such decisions and make better choices.

Goodbye Josh
We barely knew ye laddie, RIP.  Thanks for all the contributions you made to the team in your short time with us, and may your team always be on the winning side in the hereafter.  Deepest condolences to the Hancock family.

P.S. Thanks for the kind words from the the fans on other teams -- especially the Cubs.

Funeral on Thursday

His memory will be commemorated with a patch, like DK 57.

by Zubin on Apr 29, 2007 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not too much really...
Walt said they'd be wearing a 32 patch and have a tribute in the bullpen. Funeral is in Tupelo this Thursday, team plans on chartering a plane so they can all attend; memorial (i assume at Busch) when they get back from the road trip. Tony (who was wearing an under armor shirt and jeans) talked about how well liked Josh was. Police officer talked about de-construsting Josh's last few hours, accident reenactment, etc. They'll know more towards the end of the week.

They said he wasn't speeding -- The tow truck he hit wasn't on the shoulder of the road, either, it was in the left (driving) lane. Late at night, on that area of 40 (couple dips and dives, lotta lights) and I can see how this would happen, even if alcohol wasn't a factor. Apparently Josh tried to turn out of the left lane at the last second, but it was too late. They suspect he died on impact.

Cheers

also...
... police chief said that there is no evidence that alcohol played a role, or that Hancock was asleep, or anything like that. he said it looks like he just didn't see the truck until it was too late.

RIP
I'm in a state of shock and disbelief.  I feel like I've lost a family member.

I am in a sports broadcasting class and I was announcing two softball games today and the Cardinals fan that I am, I paid tribute to Josh during a pause in action.

If you head to Redbirds Fun, you'll see a photo that I took when I got his autograph last May during the two game series at the beginning of the month.

I'm saddened that, once again, we get hit by tragedy during a series against the Cubs.  They did the right thing to call the game off and I would imagine JH32 will be right next to DK57 in the bullpen.

Josh, RIP, we'll miss you, and we'll win the 2007 World Series and dedicate it to you.  Give our warm regards to Jack and DK.

"Josh, you'll be sorely missed. Please rest in peace.

and on that, RIP Josh, I guess god just needed a righty reliever...

And I couldn't help think about Christine Buck's eulogy at Jack's wake at Busch II where she said, "Go crazy, heaven. Go crazy."

Hopefully, God did just need a righty reliever and that's why he's there.

Thanks for the kind words, and again, thanks to all the classy fans of other teams leaving notes of compassion. It's nice to see the baseball world come together a little to recognize someone who, by all accounts, seemed to be a really good guy.

RIP, Josh.

unbelievable
I can't belive this is happening the the Cardinal family again. and that's what we are. we are not mearly fans pulling for players that wear a uniform. we are a family put together by common bond of the love of baseball. and Josh was deffinalty part of our family. today is with out question the saddest day for the Cardinal family since the passing of DK. how erie or ironic that just a few days ago Josh over slept and freaked out everyone at the ballpark. my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the Hancock family. Josh will be missed. not only for his abilityes on a diamond, but because he truly was a good person, a great friend, and a wonderful team mate.

one last thing, someone asked me right after my dads accident in 02 how my family could belive in a GOD who allows tragic events to happen to good people. the simplest answer is this. bad things happen to good people because they are the only ones strong enough to handle them. the Cardinal family was strong enough to handle losing DK, and we are still strong enough to handle losing Josh. it may not seam fair, and it won't be easy. but the Cardinal family will get through this.  each and everyday as I help care for dad I know GOD is watching over and taking care my family. and I know now he is doing the same for the Hancock family.

goodbye Josh.

p.s. thanks to all the fans of other teams for your kind words and prayers. especially cub fans.

was watching him pitch this last week.....
against the Reds,on my MLB package out here in Los Angeles...and the guys were talking about Josh's release from the Reds...and how his weight was a factor in the release..or at least suspected that was a factor...and they were commenting on how fit he looked now...and I thought that too....and was thinking " good for him ... and how proud he must have felt being out there on that mound with the Reds brass noticing his hard work and accomplishment...  and now..
gone.
My simple words of grief are like the other baseball fans here today...My deepest condolances to Josh's family, teamates and friends...and how nice to see all the messages from other cities and fans of other teams too.... Loss is never easy to take, friends.
We'll miss a member of our Cardinal family, no matter how well we knew him or even appreciated him. Tragedies like this remind each of us of how precious life is and how short life can be. We mourn and miss somebody that we feel connected to, and we pray for family members and close friends whose grief right now knows no end. Even thogh this is just a silly game of bases, bats, and balls, baseball unites generations and families together and provides each of us a means to belong to something we can put our heart into. This time of tragedy can be a time of healthy reflecting on each of our lives and the priorities we have chosen. We grieve for you, Josh, and Hancock family, we pray for you in your time of loss and bereavement.

Sincerest condolences
Josh was a hell of a reliever, and way too young a man for this tragedy.

God Love You, Josh Hancock, RIP.

Prayers and best wishes from a Cubs fan...
I was planning on going to the game tonight, but obviously this tragedy supersedes that. My condolences to Hancock's family and the Cardinals organization and fans.

In a strange coincidence, I was in a taxi last night on Grand, stopped at the light on Forest Park. The driver and myself both smelled a strong odor of burning rubber and two fire trucks passed us to enter 40. I have no doubt they were responding to the accident. I went to school at SLU, and those familiar with the Midtown area know that such late night emergency vehicles aren't an uncommon sight in that part of town. Obviously, however, a fairly ordinary tragedy affects us differently when there is some connection, however indirect, to our own lives.

Again, as much fun and emotion we all have in the Cardinals/Cubs rivalry, an incident like this certainly puts things in perspective. Again, condolences.

We'll ALL Miss Josh
It's hard not to comment on this.  I mean, the Cardinals are a class organization all the way, and as a Brewers fan I rooted for them in the playoffs last year.  I feel so bad for them, and the players that were associated with JH, like the Weavers and Suppans of the world.  This kind of stuff shouldn't happen, but it does.  And I hate that fact.

I know the Crew plays the Cards coming up here, but I really don't care like I normally would.  I wouldn't even mind seeing the Cardinals win the first game, believe it or not!  After what they've been through they do deserve it, yet the games must go on.  I just want all fans of the Cardinals to know that this thing definately does transcend favorite teams, and all true baseball fans should feel for what happened today.

I'm reminded of
a famous A.E. Housman poem, though Josh was not a runner.

To An Athlete Dying Young

Josh was clearly a nice guy and a good teammate, and the way fans and players from around baseball have come together on this really warms my heart. We'll all miss him, whether it's the Cardinals family, the MLB family, or the family of fans out here.

hancock
his career linhe is impressive too, he wasn't just some scrub...

he had less hits given up per innings pitched, and a good bb/k ratio. except for being a bit prone to the longball, his career line is impressive.

he might have had a career like suppan if he could have broke into a starting roation again.,

im sad..

by Rentboy on Apr 30, 2007 1:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

also
his career ERA is 4.20

everytime i light up, every april 20th, i will remember you mr hancock.

also, he filled many roles in our 2006 season in our bullpen, he was a little kikio calero, a little al reyes, a little of cal eldred, and i saw promise as a starter.

im depressed..

Thoughts while i cant sleep
Man, it's late and I really can't sleep. I normally sleep like a baby Sunday nights.

I started thinking about DK. How odd(? is that even close to the right word?) and combined both of these two tragedies are...

It is weird; the first text I got this morning woke me up around nine and was "Whats wrong with the Cardinals pitchers during Cubs series?" I chalked it up to "they suck?" and hit the pillow to keep sleeping off a massive hangover. Twenty minutes later, another text from another friend: "Sorry to hear about Josh." What? I need sleepy. Ten minutes later, another text: "Sorry to hear about your guy. Best." Seriously, what the fuck? As I got up to check my e-mail, one last text from one of my buddies: "So we can now say we saw the accident that killed Josh Hancock. Fuck."

Fuck. Flash back to 6/22/02 and my celly waking me up from a super hangover at noon in north carolina. My buddy Nate is at Wrigley. Sounds like DK died last night. Fuck.

Really just a surreal day. I know the "best fans in baseball" bullshit is played out ad naus, but it really does feel like a friend or cousin just died. He got picked up by the Birds, loved St Louis. Moved here in the off-season, went to Blues games, was out at bars all the time but never did the d-list vip treatment. Just dug being a Cardinal, a St Louisian.

Just a dude, happy to play a game for a living.

I know the grinders make up 80% of MLB, but we dont hear about them enough. Just fucking happy to be there. I like guys like Josh. And we would not have won the Series w/out him. I wish I knew more about him while he was still around.

I'm voting for him to be a post-hum "Darryl Kile (Good Guy) Award " winner for '07.

JH32. RIP Big Guy.

Well said, Alxfritz
"Just dug being a Cardinal, a St Louisian.... Just a dude, happy to play a game for a living."

He was a good pick-up and played a key role in our WS championship last year; but most importantly, he just seemed like a nice kid who appreciated what he had and enjoyed his life here... there are lots of others like him who we don't know because they don't play for the Cards. Most of us have known good people like him who died way too soon; let's appreciate them and Josh and each other and what we have here. Baseball seems pretty unimportant right now, but if baseball and Josh can help us do that, then we can take something really valuable from this mess.

Thanks so much to all the visitors here
I don't have much to add except another heartfelt thanks to everyone who dropped by from other teams' blogs to share your condolences and good wishes. This is a cruel reminder of 2002 that none of us needed or wanted. I hope the Cards, their families, and Josh's family hold onto each other and take care of each other, and I hope we can all get something of value out of this waste of a young life.

my hancock memory
im pretty sure it was game 6 of the nlcs when he let an inherited runner score and he went into the dugout and slammed the shit out of his glove on the bench over and over.  i liked the fire. he was a bulldog.  RIP Josh, always a cardinal in our hearts
If you dont have outstanding relief pitching, you might as well piss on the fire and call the dogs....Whitey Herzog

yeah...
I know exactly what you're talking about here. Except that I think it was Game 2 because, as I recall, it was partly that he was mad at himself for letting the bullpen's first runner of the postseason score. In those postseason interviews, he was so proud of the job the bullpen had done (I remember after winning the NLDS, he had a huge smile on his face and noted that the bullpen had allowed 0 runs in the series).

He was a bulldog. And we won't soon forget it. Thanks for bringing up a Josh memory that I'll always remember as well.

OK, this sounds stupid
On my Baseball Mogul franchise, a rash of injuries in the 2007 season forced Hancock into the rotation for a couple starts.  He pitched well enough to hang on to a rotation spot for the rest of the season, and went on to anchor the staff for several years.  Even made a couple All-Star teams.

I wish life had had a chance to imitate art.

Genuinely Sorry for Your Loss
I'm a 48 year old Die Hard Cub Fan who has always felt the rivalry deeply, but respected the Card's organization and it's knowledgable and loyal fans. My sincere condolences and prayers to Josh Hancock's family and friends, and to all in the Cards extended family of fans.

I was still living in Chicago and listening to the WGN radio broadcast in my car in june '02 on that other fateful day when that game was cancelled. That was a sad day, and so feels even more so.

My prayers go out to you all.

Re:circumstances of death
highway 40 is a deathtrap, it's like a cobblestone road, my car can catch air in stretches, i dont drive on it..

tow trucks are huge, and the guy Hancock hit was parked IN THE DRIVING LANE, THE FAST LANE. stupid, stup[id, stupid..you pull over on the RIGHT. unwritten highway rule. you dont park IN THE FAST LANE..

two drinks in an hour and you a "drunk driver." lets not even fucking go there. before we even know shit k? DUI's are usually people who had 2 drinks, and the reckless crazy drivers are usually police. cause they can..they runover people daily cause they just like to drive fast..

get bent

hancock rocked, also sucks lots of you had him on your least favoreite cardinal poll when guy was essentially a younger cheaper suppan.

love ya josh!!

I just dont like 40 myself...but its cause traffic
to be fair, there was an accident and a car was disabled in the far left lane.  I believe it was the tow truck drivers duty to pull between that vehicle and traffic (with lights on to avoid accidents) until police arrived.

A time for everything
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:  a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

What does the worker gain from his toil?  I have seen the burden God has laid on men.  He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.  I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.  That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil -- this is the gift of God.

Horrible Loss
I just can't imagine the pain that your organization, your fans, your players and Josh's family and friends must feel. I didn't know him at all, and only saw him pitch a few times yet as fan and person I can truly relate to your loss. He left too soon.

My heart goes out to all of you. .
God Bless.

A Cub fan.
