Game 23 Open Thread: April 28, 2007

1-2, 6.91

1-1, 5.04

that's the cards' most aggravating loss since this one, in which st louis twice had the tying run at 3d with one out late in the game and couldn't get the ball out of the infield. . . . after that game, i noted that the cardinals had swung at nearly everything in those critical rbi situations. similar thing happened last night: after pujols' hit put the tying run at 3d with nobody out, the cardinals hacked at 9 of the ensuing 13 pitches, including at least three that probably were balls:

  • the 0-1 pitch to rolen: slider down and in, a pitcher's pitch. even if it's a strike, the best rolen can do with it is beat it into the ground. no reason to chase that one; rolen fouled it off to put himself in an 0-2 hole.
  • the 0-0 pitch to taguchi: a late, anxious half-swing on a high fastball --- probably ball 1. gooch obviously was not looking for that pitch, put himself in a hole. cotts let him off the hook with the subsequent hbp.
  • the 0-0 pitch to kennedy: slider in on the hands; again, probably a ball. presumably kennedy was anticipating an inside fastball and got fooled; he tapped the pitch foul.
the cardinals really only got one good pitch to hit in the entire sequence --- the first one, a hanging slider / sinker that rolen missed by a couple of inches and fouled back. i have no problem with rolen attacking that pitch --- he missed it, but that'll happen. at least the judgment was sound. after that pitch, though, the cardinals got jumpy and never forced the cub relievers to come over the plate.

re la russa's failure to pinch-hit spiezio for preston wilson in the 8th, with dempster on the mound . . . . don't really know what to say about it. it was such an obvious thing to do that i feel silly explaining why spiezio was a superior choice to wilson. i haven't seen any explanation from tony, except that wilson got a hit off dempster last week. . . . if that was the reason, it wasn't one of la russa's more clever tactical maneuvers.

well, let me be a little more honest about this: i thought it was beyond stupid. but if anybody can defend that (non)move, i'm all ears.

i looked at reyes' bad inning --- homer to ramirez on a changeup, the 3d anthony had thrown in the at-bat. he fooled ramirez with two changes to start the at-bat, wasted a fastball away, then came back with the change on 1-2 --- ramirez was waiting for it. reyes had used a similar sequence on this hitter after getting two strikes on him in the 2d inning --- wasted an 0-2 fastball away, then came back with the changeup down and in (for a ball) and another changeup on 2-2; the one ramirez hit out was the 5th changeup ramirez had seen in two plate appearances. . . . the pitch to pie was just a nothing fastball, an 86 mph pitch. in the first, when reyes struck out the side, he was hitting 93 on the gun with high fastballs, and threw a 91 mph high fastball two pitches before the homer to pie, so the speed of the gopher-ball pitch suggests that it was a failed two-seamer.

cards/cubs series is off to a great start this year --- three very interesting games already, tossups. we'll see how they fall this afternoon.

Hey Lboros
I was wondering what you thought about Bernie vs. Tony during the press conference?

i can see why la russa might not like the article, but he is not paid to make newspaper decisions.

WGN had an interesting stat on Reyes
I don't remember the exact numbers.
  1.  First time through the lineup, batters hit over .500 against him (it was .583 or something)
  2.  2nd time through the lineup, batters hit under .300 against him (not sure, it was .2xx I think)
  3.  3rd time through the lineup (how many times does this happen?) batters hit like .083 against him

by sdrone on Apr 28, 2007 9:57 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wilson
I just put it as stupid, instead of beyond stupid.  The thought process may have gone like this:
  1.  The scoreboard said Wilson was .500 against Dempster; I'm assuming that meant he was 1 for 2.
  2.  He already knew he would be sending Spezio up as a PH for the pitcher's spot.  I believe that left two people on the bench -- Schumaker and Bennett.  Tony never likes to use his backup catcher unless he has to.
  3.  So, it's 4-3 with one out and bases loaded in the 8th.  All Wilson has to do is hit a fly ball.  He then might be looking at extra innings with only one guy on the bench.
It's a reason.  It goes against the win now philosophy, and also reveals the fundamental problem with this team:  A whole lot of bad choices and a lot of .200 hitters.  I was looking at that lineup and asking myself, are the Cubs really scared once they got past Rolen?  I wouldn't be.

by knieriemd on Apr 28, 2007 10:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And why worry about Rolen when
as the Cubs announcers put it, you keep getting "pitcher's strikes" against him?

by sdrone on Apr 28, 2007 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, Wilson love him or hate him
has a better chance of staying out of the DP than Spiezio does.  Preston has already beat out his fair share of infield singles this year.

The only justification I can think of is
that he'd used Miles and Taguchi.  He's going to have to pinch hit for Flores in a couple of AB's and if he uses Spiezio there he's emptied his bench except for Bennett.  Could he have been worried about going extra innings w/ only Bennett on the bench?

I should make it clear -- I thought it was a horrendous move.  i was calling for Spiezio at the time.  I'm not defending LaRussa, just trying to explain what his thought process may have been.

I should also point out that, if LaRussa was worried about emptying his bench, isn't Edmonds/Spiezio OR Edmonds/Taguchi better than Taguchi/Wilson for those 2 AB's?

2 other things:  if Rolen does his job, it's a moot point.  In fact, Edmonds probably bats w/ a tie game and at least 1 runner on.  So Rolen could've made that decision easier.  2nd -- if Edmonds' avg/slg/ops were even decent at this point would LaRussa have pinch-hit for him?  Edmonds needs to start producing if he is at all capable!

by chuckb on Apr 28, 2007 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good point
the inability of Rolen to do the job, and the inability of Edmonds to hit lefties made TLR make a choice that he shouldn't've had to make.

that said, i'd rather've seen Schumacher squeeze than Wilson. everybody in the world knew that was a K coming.

Telecast of today's game
An earlier reminder than last week to those of you looking for the game that are, like me in LA, with the Yankees/RedSox and not the Cardinals/Cubs on Fox--this week again, Fox-E (in Spanish) has the Cardinals game--I think that it's 616 on Direct TV and should be somewhere in your cable system

As to the game last night, hard to disagree with LBoros and I don't--however, the press room eschange was beyond arrogance for LaRussa, who obviously didn't have a good night--however, I hadn't read the Goold piece when I saw the exchange, but then did, and it was so obviously in fun (Pinella said as much) that the Tony response and then explosion was in as poor a judgment that I have seen in a long time from a manager or head coach--now I recognize that reading some of the comments here last night that a healthy difference of opinion existed which is fine, but being here in LA for 35 years (which is nowhere near NY interms of media criticism)makes you realize how LaRussa and team get pretty much a free pass from the St. Louis media--Miklasz is one of the few that I have heard or seen who is honest--it's probably a good thing that Tony doesn't read this blog (or any for that matter that doesn't constantly praise his team or refrain from creating bulletin board material--which the Goold article was not) or he would have to go manage Memphis--I invite anyone to read Page Two of the LA Times and T.J. Simers who in the past few years has taken on Hall of Famers like Phil Jackson of the Lakers, Jeff Kent of the Dodgers (yes, he's headed to the Hall), etc.--just can't believe that it's such a different world--and gee, somehow, all of those people seem to still be able to talk to the press and get along--I think that what really bothers me and must bother some of the rest of you is that the Cardinals have some obvious issues and while it is impossible for a manager to be right in his decisions all of the time, Tony thinks that he is above question-- however I don't believe one very lucky World Series win (for which I am eternally thankful) after a virtual total collapse that had most of us hoping beyond hope that we wouldn't be explaining an el foldo greater than the 1964 Phillies does NOT get LaRussa a free pass--after game decisions last night and this season with a head in the sand approach again beginning like last year with sending Marquis out time after time to an above 6 ERA, a refusal to play youth until absolutely forced to do so makes you begin to wonder if indeed it isn't time for a change for LaRussa--no comments necessary as to he isn't going anywhere now--I fully understand, but  all of us should understand that So, Skip and PW are going to continue to be sent out as will our leadoff man, who Joe Strauss suggested on FSN the other day is not healthy or right-perhap since the concussion last year--even if MV3 starts to hit better, a leadoff man with a very below average OBP is going to be deadly as it is already but has not been as noticeable given that the middle of the lineup has been so bad--I am very concerned that Tony's loyalty--let's call that for what it is, though--stubborness-will again interfere with better judgment--apparently this season may well be a ride like late last summer--let's see if we can get a win today and not get Zambrano back on track

by MortLA on Apr 28, 2007 11:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My eyes hurt trying to read that.
Interesting perspective, but nest time would you mind breaking your thoughts into more than one sentence and more than one paragraph?

I agree with your point of the "near colapse" of last year-- we were only a Smoltz away from a much dreaded playoff with Houston.  But TLR did seem to do an amazing job of managing the team once we hit the playoffs.  I only recall two major mis-steps last fall: starting A-Rey in game 4 of the NLCS and not pinch-hitting for Yadi in the ninth inning of Game 2 in the WS.  And as it turns out the former move was probably critical to set up the game WS victory.

As far as TLR thinking he is above question, I think that is somewhat fair criticism, but I never saw a Manger who liked being second-guessed.

tough loss last night. i was hoping to see spiezio there instead of wilson, but he did hit the cubs well last weekend and did have a hit off dempster. yes, he's hitting in the low .200s, but few people on the team have been hitting that well.

there were a lot of "almosts" in that game, and they just didn't turn out the right way. every now and then we will win some of these close ones.

still waiting for reyes to get his act together. and i can't believe this is the same jason marquis. perhaps he had a brain transplant in the offseason.

Wilson provided more offense than anyone else in the first two games at Wrigley, at least according to WPA. See the WPA game graphs on fangraphs.com. I would have preferred to see Spiezio in his place as well, but that's one reason to give Wilson the chance.

Why does MLB TV have to blackout all games on FOX?  Not that I have that option but for all over the air games, they should make those available online for free since they would be blacked out otherwise.

Visiting from BCB
I'm going to re-post here -- this is at the end of last night thread, and it might be ignored.

One poster said:

"Losing To The Cubs Is The Worst Thing In The World."

Why? You have more than a few rings in your pocket. A loss in April to a team which is struggling is just that -- a loss in April.

Losing the World Series, or NLCS is a far worse fate. But, it's nice to get there -- which you have many times. I hope I get a chance to see that -- A series -- sometime.

I'm surprised by the amount of angst going on here. You are the Champs, try to enjoy it. Not every team wins every year, and the Cardinals certainly are still the front runners.

I can understand the frustration of losing to a player you hated -- I've been there. But, for whatever reason, Jason Marquis looks to be pretty effective this year. He looked very good in Mesa, too.

If he had mechanical problems, they seem to be solved. Let's face it -- he's pitching, and the Cubs 2 so-called 'aces' are in the hospital, never to be seen again.

For that alone, Marquis gets style points for at least getting out to the mound...

Unfortunately, Fox SD has decided to carry 'the other game.' So, enjoy....

He's, as they say, doing it with smoke and mirrors.  Unfortunately, two of those have been against the Cardinals.

I'm sure somewhere Jason thinks his defense let him down and he was real gritty 'earning' that win last night.

Cardinals-Cubs rivalry
brings out the best in some, the worst in some, and both in some.

Don't take it personnaly, such comments just underscore how much the rivalry means to both teams.

by Zubin on Apr 28, 2007 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh no, not personal at all
There was angst directed toward your own team -- by Cardinals fans. Criticism, sure, I can see that, but there has been so much  downright
'sky is falling' stuff this season, for no reason.
I've visited a bunch of times this year, and have noticed that a lot. (I expect negative stuff toward the Cubs, but that's absolutely normal, and part of the game. No problem there.)

Many of the Cubs 'fans' on BCB (and other blogs, for the most part) seem to be negative, and obviously, there are multiple reasons. I try to lean away from that stuff -- when there are hard points of discussion, you have to talk 'em over, but the usual -- this sucks, that sucks -- I have no use for that.

But I didn't expect so many Redbird fans dissing their own team, that's what I meant.

I know the bar is high -- but, an outside observer, there isn't reason to panic. Besides, if if things don't go as expected -- again, there are multiple rings to look back on.

I'm not going to admit my age, but as a little kid I had a Lou Brock Cubs baseball card. (And still have it) So, I haven't seen a lot of positive stuff.

However, if I was a fan of a team that had the track record of the Cardinals, I sure wouldn't be so quick to show so much venom to a slow start to a season.

Just some thoughts. Enjoy your successes, don't forget them.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 28, 2007 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks so much
for your concern. But have no fear: the vast majority of us have been and will continue to thoroughly enjoy our World Championship(s)--all ten of them. It's rather impossible not to. The angst you see here is mostly skin-deep, nothing like the "to the bone" stuff you all have going on at BCB. And that's as it should be; 99 years is a long time. As for Marquis, you guys haven't really met his evil twin yet. The reason he got on our bad side isn't that he was consistently awful, but because he does just what he's doing now--throw good games to start a season. He was our best pitcher for the first couple of months last year. BUT just about the time you trust him when you really need him to come through, he will screw the pooch--several times in a row. Then he will again pitch a gem or two, thereby re-gaining your trust, only to screw the pooch again--several times in a row. The "it's early" mantra actually does apply to this subject. You'll all meet Betty soon enough. He didn't get demoted to the pen and left off the roster completely in consecutive World Series drives simply because TLR didn't like his face. Whatever. Thanks again for your concern, but I think we'll all be just fine. Do come back in September and let us know how Marquis' mechanics are looking then :-)

Would it NOT have made sense to pinch-hit with Gooch and squeeze last night?  I know it would have just tied the game, but we would have had a 4-4 score and a man on second with only one out.  Aren't you supposed to play for the tie at home?

Carpenter Update w/quotes
http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070428&content_id=1935013&vkey=news_ stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl

Carpenter threw around 70 pitches with a break in the middle of the session and will now wait until Sunday to see if the elbow swells up. The last time Carpenter threw a bullpen session was in Houston, and after the session he felt fine, but the next morning the elbow swelled up and forced the Cards to put Carpenter on the DL.

Tomorrow morning is the big test.  If Carp wakes up with no swelling, he's one step closer.

If Carpenter does throw another successful bullpen in Milwaukee[Tuesday], La Russa wasn't sure whether or not the right-hander would make a rehab start at Triple-A Memphis or one of the Cardinals' other affiliates. The manager stressed that Carpenter's health is the most important thing.

If he throws the bullpen session Tuesday, his 5th day would be Sunday vs Houston (should they skip a rehab assignment).  If he takes an assignment on Sunday, his day would be Friday at the Padres.

The interesting thing is that if they bumped Reyes up and have him pitch on his 4th day along with throwing Wainwright Wednesday, Carpenter's turn would actually come up Sunday (where Keisler would have pitched).

I doubt that he will get through this bullpen session today or Tuesday without a hitch, though.

Just Me?
i had a bunch of people over to my house last night, and we all thought Spiezio's fly ball was fair last night. FSN didn't have a great angle, but we rewound it on DVR and watched it in slow-motion about 10 times. every time, we all thought the ball disappeared behind the pole, which would make it fair.

nobody complained, so maybe i just got fooled by the bad angle. but i'm still not convinced. anybody got a perspective.

I agree
I've replayed it as much as you and I never see the ball cross in front of the foul pole.

Since no one at the game complained, I assumed it was foul no matter what.  However, usually you can see the ball pass in front of the yellow line.

I never see it on this play.

It wasn't easy
but he probably should have caught it.  A more experience outfielder catches it but he looked like he was concerned with running into the wall (understandable) which is funny because he basically ran through it.

Not like that minor league outfielder that ran straight through the wall about 15 years ago, but the big guy ended up in the bullpen.

Cubs had 1st and 2nd, 1 out
ARam grounds to Rolen.  He steps on bag and throws to first wide and high to Pujols' right (sorta toward the right field corner).  Pujols jumps to catch the ball and then dives back with his glove to first.

His glove hit first a split-second before ARam's foot.  However, it did look like Pujols shielded the base from the 1st base up during the play.

Runners on 1st 2nd
Ground ball to Rolen, should have been an easy 2.  Stepped on 3rd lobbed a terrible throw to first.  Pujols came off the bag to get it, dove back and tagged the bag with his golve.  He was out but they called him safe.

We Suck
We Suck really bad. I know that it is very insightful as a post but I don't know anyway around it. Our pitching is terribly inconsistent if not flat out bad. Our middle of the lineup has no pop at all. It wouldn't matter if our 3-4-5 guys were hitting because they have no one to hit in.

I guess I'll root on the local AHL team in the playoffs.

by Brownale on Apr 28, 2007 5:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Anyone getting concerned...
about the starting pitching?

Wells is at 4.70, Wainwright 6.14, Reyes 5.73, and Keisler/Carp 6.21. And Narveson or maybe Cate is coming up... oh yeah, and Looper is our ace.

by guayzimi on Apr 28, 2007 5:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i think they can
work it out, but clearly wainwright is out of sorts mechanically, reyes can't throw 100 pitches in less the 5, and kip wells regressed to the mean in a nasty way lately. looper certainly can't keep up this good run he is on forever and so on and so forth. with the team's inability to score runs i'm afraid things could get worse before they get better.

ya know
We've had a ridiculous number of line drive double plays this year and Yadi's was just another of a long series.  What are we supposed to say, "oh nice, another line DP"?

I have pity for you, since your team can't ever pull it together for a full season and because you had to endure a terrible season last year.  However, you are being a bit unsportsmanlike at this point.

Anyone notice Wainwright's velocity is down???
His fast ball is consistently in the 88-90 range for at least the last four starts - I haven't been able to see this game, but the highlight (the one measly highlight) that Fox has run showed him through an 88mph fastball right down central....

by cardsfaninmass on Apr 28, 2007 5:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

to be expected...
... it's early in the season, and he's a starter now. he can't got out and let 'er rip for an inning like he could last year.

more troubling to me is that his curveball isn't tight at all and he can't throw it for a strike.

From champs to last place?
Has it ever happened? If not, this team has a hell of a good chance of doing it. This team is awful in every department you can keep a stat for. Nothing at AAA. Nothing to trade at the major league level. It's going to be a long, long season with little hope for improvement for next year.

Thankfully we got the title just before our window of opportunity closed. That window is now officially closed.

This team is bad
I know that's not a revelation but I kept hoping they'd come out of it.  Edmonds is bad.  Eckstein is bad.  Kennedy -- yuck!  We have no right-fielder and no bench.  The depressing thing is that I truly believe that, once we get behind, it's over.  This team has no ability to come back b/c they cannot hit.  I really never expected that we'd be this bad!

i missed everything
NY vs BOS in columbus today. what the heck happened? they are still playing a little after 7pm on the east coast. why do those games always last 5 hours?

anyway, did the Cards really play that poorly? Big Z has had our number for the past few seasons. since his early blow ups he really has shut the Cards down. so I missed everything, anyone care to fill me in and relive the misery of the loss to the cubs?

by gdm426 on Apr 28, 2007 7:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well....not really....
basically, Wainwright had one really bad inning in which the cubs batted around and got some clutch hits, the last being a three-run triple with 2 outs by J. Jones off the wall in left-center.

The bats just couldn't get anything going, very few hardhit balls; one ball that was hardhit (Yadi) ended up in a double play, as the hit and run was on. Pujols hit a very long, but ultimately meaningless homerun in the 7th, just same trouble with the offense. Zambrano pitched to contact, 2 ks 0 bbs, and we couldn't get anything going. Wainwright still doesn't look sharp, looked to be falling off the mound and screwed up a bit mechanically, but he was mowing them down thru the first four. Sportscenter and the boxscore will do it for you. Frustrating.
