Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

splitsville

i'll admit i thought the game was over after the top of the first; didn't realize that sunday was this year's designated hitting day. i won't make the same error next weekend. . . . whatever the day of the week, maybe i was too quick to assume that 2 runs constituted an insurmountable deficit for this offense. in the 8 games since the abysmal season-opening sweep, the cards have averaged 4.5 runs a game and are hitting .270 / .310 / .390; in the 5 games vs pittsburgh and milwaukee, the cards went .290 / .330 / .400. these are still pretty feeble numbers, but there are a few glimmers of life. i wouldn't bury the offense just yet.

somebody suggested on here a few days ago that only pujols' wife, deidre, can save us now --- a reference to the batting advice she famously some years back to help snap albert out of a slump. never fear: she's on the case.

En route to Busch Stadium, Pujols received a text message from his wife, Deidre. The reminder said his hands had fallen too low and his crouch at the plate too pronounced.
not that it ever pays a man to dispute his wife, but in El Alberto's case the imperative to listen attentively and follow instructions seems particularly acute. do whatver she tells you, man; don't fight it, just obey.

weird split out of hombre in the early going: .862 OPS vs righthanders, but .231 vs lefties (he's 0 for 10 vs them so far with 3 walks, 2 intentional). he did have a mild reverse split last year and over his career has hit and slugged slightly better vs rhp . . . . but still. rolen's 0 for 6 vs left-handers, spiezio 0 for 7; preston wilson, whose value lies in his ability to hit southpaws, is 3 for 15. as a team, the cardinals are an average offensive club vs right-handers so far this year (8th in the league in OPS) but well below average vs lefties (12th); last season they ranked 4th vs righties and 15th vs lefties. same roster; same results. thanks to the pair of rainouts in pittsburgh over the weekend, the cards will dodge an lhp this week; the pirate rotation had been lined up to send two wrong-handers vs st louis, but instead rhp ian snell will face st louis tonight. they will not face zito in san francisco but will draw noah lowry, who has pitched better than barry so far.

the other cardinal who has trouble with lefties, braden looper, has handled them so far . . . . sort of. on the season he's held them to .259 / .333 / .444, well below his career line vs them (.305 / .371 / .464) and about equal to his performance vs them last season. yesterday the brewers' three lefties did most of the damage vs looper --- went 3 for 8 with a walk, drove in both runs. ned yost omitted two left-handed platooners from the lineup yesterday; could have had counsell at 3d (instead of graffanino) and gross in right field (instead of hart). a big part of looper's long-term success will rely on his ability to keep left-handers under control; so far the jury is still out on that score.

as for the other big doubt about looper --- his ability to get through a batting order 3 or 4 times --- the early returns are slightly more encouraging. after a difficult go on opening night --- mets went 4 for 7 with a homer and a walk the 3d time through the order --- looper mowed 'em down the 3d time through vs both pittsburgh and milwaukee, holding opponents to 1 hit in 11 at-bats (plus a walk and an hbp). it's awfully early to be declaring this conversion a success, but we haven't seen any evidence so far to suggest that it's not going to succeed . . . . . knock on wood.

nothing more to tell you this a.m.; apologies for the rushed entry. there's a full prospect report over at erik's site (both hawksworth and cate pitched for memphis yesterday), with a focus on adam ottavino; you might also be interested in Baseball Analysts' look at what happened to prior and wood.

wow.  i still think back to game 6 of the nlcs in 03 and laugh.  baker is such a moron, and bartman rules!!

good to see some life from pujols yesterday.  it goes to show we should all listen to our wifes every now and then.

Prior, Wood and Ankiel...
Man, we've seen three of the most heralded pitching prospects of the last fifteen years or so just crash and burn in this century.

But
Ankiel still could be pitching if he wanted. God that bothers me to no end.

BJ Ryan injury
Anyone know where I can get good online video of BJ Ryan pitching Saturday?  I saw it on Baseball Tonight - and to me, his mechanics looked very flawed, and he was getting hit hard.  Then, sure enough, the next day, he's on the DL with an elbow injury.

Just had me curious about his mechanics from last year vs. this year.  I know of no way to get video to check this out though.

by silent_bob on Apr 16, 2007 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

He's always had brutal mechanics
Though I would've guessed labrum before elbow though it's not like elbow is a surprise either.  He never really used his lower-half/hips to get any power...mostly arm...and then didn't even finish with his lower half at all.
Pujols < .200

by joker24 on Apr 16, 2007 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, but
His arm angle (arm slot!) was very low and this places alot of torque on the elbow.  I wish I could see a comparison.

I can't find anything for this year
But his MLB.com page has some multimedia from last.  Should be something.

I was encouraged
to see signs of life from Edmonds yesterday as well.  He scalded the ball a couple of times only to be robbed on great defensive plays by Hart and Weeks.  But I've been waiting and worrying about his ability to hit with authority and yesterday's grab by Hart took away a definite double.  That was probably the hardest ball he's hit all season and he deserved a better fate.  Maybe he's starting to snap out of it as well.

by chuckb on Apr 16, 2007 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

Not Worried.
I'm not worried about the offense.   I'll chalk up their lackluster performance to cold weather and a slow start.   If the Cardinals are still in a funk by May 1st then that's the time to sound the alarm.  The offense will be fine.  It's the bullpen that worries me.  I have no faith in Russ Springer to get anyone out.

weather affects pitching and hitting
If we assume our hitters will get better with warmer weather, I think we also have to assume our pitchers won't be as good either.

We seem to have a lot of warning track power in the middle of our line-up.

by redbird2006in on Apr 16, 2007 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

True.
However, I feel the pitching has been good because they're keeping the ball down in the zone for the most part.  I'd like to see the ratio of ground ball/fly ball out overall by the pitching staff.   I realize the number might be off a bit since Reyes is mainly a flyball pitcher, yes?

We're Ranked 12th in the Majors
According to MLB's page as of time of writing.

We're at 1.15—Reyes and the bullpen are padding the denominator.

Injuries
Doesn't it seem like there has been an unusually high amount of oblique injuries on the Card's roster over the past two years? Between AP this year and last, Eck last year, and Kennedy this spring.

Is this just freakishly bad luck? Are theese kinds of injuries reoccurring? Are they that hard to recover from? Is the training staff missing something to prevent these kinds of injuries? Any thoughts?

by bdief on Apr 16, 2007 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

This is major league wide
I seriously think it's just 'cause people are saying "hey, that's a good way of putting it."

Some people on ESPN pointed that out last year.   After Pujols had an oblique injury, there were several others last year.  No one could recall an oblique injury before last year. Heh.

So far that I've seen, Duncan hasn't done anything bad in the field.

He's certainly done everything right at the plate (leads MLB in batting average), and did you see that stolen base?  woohoo!

FYI, Lidge is going to be on Dan Patrick
In a few minutes.  Probably about 1245 pdt, 245 cdt.  Patrick keeps teasing that he will ask Lidge what is what like to give up the Pu homer and if that caused the change in his effectiveness.

by OCCardsFan on Apr 16, 2007 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

didn't get to hear
the interview, but I've always had a healthy amount of respect for Lidge after that Pujols beatdown.  He could have been sarcastic, bitter or felt sorry for himself. But he took responsibility and never shyed away from questions.  It's too bad that his effectiveness has never returned.
I hope the media doesn't simply reduce him to the next Bill Buckner.

would have been a lot worse
remember, the 'stros still WON that series. if they lose, lidge is probably close to buckner - or at least beltran - already.
I believe in the Sports Guy rule. Any "complaining" in this post is actually happy, cheerful "constructive criticism."

by nycbirdo on Apr 16, 2007 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

right
i though of that when i was typing it.  But the 'sound-byte' media loves to boil things down to a single dramatic clip - ignoring other obvious results or reasons.

Kind alike the whole Bartman event.  If it wasn't for that poor guy in the stands, Alex Gonzalez = Bill Buckner.

He disclaimed that AP's homer was what caused his
Lack of effectiveness last year.  He said basically that he was trying to make too many adjustments and that was screwing him all up.  He is just working on his preparation...

I agree he has done a great job of dealing with the media.  Patrick was setting this up all morning and yet Lidge still went on and answered the questions.  I certainly respect him for that.

Pshaw!
No mention of his brilliant batting (career OPS: 1.500) or his freakishly great golf swing, ranked 101st among amateurs in Europe? (Admittedly, that's a different Wagonmaker...)

No respect...

by liam on Apr 16, 2007 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a Brit amateur
but I was told by some caddies in Jupiter that our Wagonmaker is a legitimate 2 handicap golfer.

by kemime on Apr 16, 2007 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I've heard the same thing
Mulder was complaining about not being the best golfer on the team anymore when WW was first called up and Izzy banned him from golfing when he earned a significant role in the bullpen (on the argument that he had to be ready to pitch everyday and had to break from his leisurely starter's habits.) Funny stuff.

When I first saw there was a British amateur out there, I thought Adam was moonlighting.

by liam on Apr 16, 2007 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting that he was called
"a 6'7" Chris Carpenter," as though their heights were significantly different.  Isn't Carp only 1 inch shorter?

by MdRedbirdFreak on Apr 16, 2007 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Carp
is an iffy 6'6". When he's next to mulder (listed at 6'5"), they're the same height.

Wainwright looks like a legit 6'7", but that may just be the ganglyness of him.

Cheers

by Alxfritz on Apr 16, 2007 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah
But Wainwright has that length that makes him look significantly taller.  Carpenter seems much more proportional and I didn't even realize until '05 that he was 6'6.  Could've told me he was 6'3 and I would've believed it.  No one is going to confuse the Wagon for not being a tall ass dude.

In any case, he is in fact a middle class man's Carpenter.  -2 or 3 mph on the fastball without as much movement, not as good a slider/cutter, better curve, better change, not as good command...meaning I'll thoroughly enjoy him 30ish times a year for at least the next 5 just because we are comparing him to Carp.

And his slider isn't so much unhittable as it is just impossible to sit on.  When your primary off-speed pitch is an 80 curve, there's no way you can account for a decent slider.

Just makes me feel better about the rotation that it seems he can make the big league adjustments.  He's a damn good #2 (dare I even say borderline 1), Wells has looked like a 2, Reyes now that he's down on velo is a 3ish, Looper is pitching well, and we'll pull something out of our hat till Carpenter/Mulder return.
