the old man is snoring . . . . . as CardFanVA noted last night, the rainout means tony n dave can shield keisler from the cubs and all those right-handed hitters. randy's next start now slides back to wednesday at san francisco; with a scheduled off day looming on april 23, la russa can make another adjustment to herd keisler away from the second cubs series, at the end of this month. like so:
| 4/15 mil looper |
4/16 pgh reyes |
4/17 pgh wainwright |
4/18 @sf keisler |
4/19 @sf wells |
4/20 @chi looper |
4/21 @chi reyes |
| 4/22 @chi wainwright |
4/23 OFF |
4/24 cin wells |
4/25 cin looper |
4/26 cin keisler |
4/27 chi reyes |
4/28 chi wainwright |
| 4/29 chi wells |
4/30 @mil looper |
5/1 @mil keisler |
5/2 @mil reyes |
5/3 OFF |
5/4 hou wainwright |
5/5 hou wells |
good reading elsewhere:
- begin with excellent posts about honoring jackie robinson at Cardnilly and the cardinals' first African American player, tom alston, at Bird Land. both of 'em help put tomorrow's anniversary --- 60 years since the integration of baseball --- in perspective. i'm down with Cardnilly: i think the cardinals' decision to wear #42 en masse tomorrow is something to applaud.
- the farm-system report is up at Future Redbirds; only two teams in action last night, as memphis and springfield both got rained out. trey hearne pitched for palm beach.
- danup looks back fondly on the cardinals' 2004 draft.
- the 2007-08 free agent class just lost an important member: jake westbrook is signing an extension with cleveland.
- a lot of people out there detest the new Gameday at mlb.com --- too much information, poorly packaged. or so goes the complaint. how do you guys feel about it?

#42
I'm from Italy so I fear that I can't fully understand how important was to have Robinson playing in MLB, but I'm happy that our favorite sport helped to break racial barriers. Wearing #42 on white people is a really good sign that we're all human beings, despite skin color.
GO CARDS!!!
anniversary
It certainly hasn't always been that way, as anyone who went to games years ago could attest. I don't know the reason. Perhaps there was an explosion of interest in baseball among blacks in the 1940s and '50s because it was the first sport to integrate, and that interest has simply waned over the years.

It certainly seems that way.

Over at Keith Olbermann's Countdown
Gameday
Speedier data entry on balls in play would win far more fans than pitch-break data. I know it takes a while to figure some plays out and the Intranet is not always an instantaneous thing, but still...
why would you not
I'm actually pretty fond
I also feel it's faster then gameday has been in the past.
Pitch Data
But in-play descriptions are still poor, particularly with hit and run situations. The worst is that interminable pause after saying "ball in play." Actually, the worst are the frequent lock-ups.
For me it's not so much that gameday is worse, it just isn't any better and the new format is lousy for split screen use. At least there is competition since MLB lost their law suite claiming to own all the stats. For right now, cbs gamecenter wins as most improved, and most useful.

agree w/
Westbrook important?
His line just isn't that impressive. While his FIP has been considerably better than his actual ERA the last couple years, his peripherals still aren't so impressive. His career avg is 4.8 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9.
Additionally, PECOTA has him projected to decline rapidly with only 1.7 WARP by 2011, his age 33 year...and a year that would probably still be under contract had he looked at free agency.
He looks like a big salary drain to me.
he'll surely be overpriced
worth the money? probably not. but given carp's elbow status, who knows what sort of rotation the cards will be bringing back in 2008 . . . . i'd just as soon have westbrook out there as an option.
westbrook
This game interesting. Westbrook stranded a bunch of runners in the first three innings - genereally looked terrible. But then he got his control back and pitched a complete game shutout.
New Gameday...
I only need to use Gameday when there is a game during the day and I'm at work, (at work they block streaming audio and video)... so for me the most important thing is to be able to glance at the screen and know immediately what the situation is.
That being said, last week someone recommended ESPN's game tracker, (or whatever they call it). I tried it and it seems much nicer than MLB's Gameday.

New Gameday
From the...
Jason Jennings has tendinitis and will miss a start.
Ok, so what's worse: tendinitis or bone spurs? The bone spurs are going to keep Carp out til after the all-star break (my feeling), but tendinitis sure doesn't sound like much fun either. What is that? An inflamed tendon?
And to add...
The Stros and Cubbies in meltdown sure is a nice distraction from the Cards' problems...
Ick - the dreaded forearm flexor!!

But with the "old" version I do not need the update.
At home I have tried the new Gameday but don't like it. I use the links to the "old" one.

new vs old
It takes forever to scroll, when I want to go back and see other innings, etc. And because of the advert, you can't see the whole lineup, after there have been any substitutions.
I use the links to the old Gameday at http://6-4-2.blogspot.com/

how's the weather in St. Louis? weather.com doesn't look too promising...
Stadium Cam
42 degrees cold wet and still drizzling. It feals calm, like we're on the backside. They should be able play; I should head downtown and scalp a cheap ticket.

WARP question
WARP Not Outcome Dependent
really guys,
a lot of this argument about the old gameday being better sounds like a bunch of old guys talking about the good ol days when you could by coke for a nickel, and it had real coke in it!
ok, crazy illustration...just saying i don't see what all the fuss is about.
That griddle article
The new gameday is a bit resource intensive. On a slower computer, it's difficult to control the sliders and what-not—scrolling back through the inning recaps can be frustrating.
The extra pitch data is great, though.

Yeah, what the hell?
Just pipe in some Ray Charles belting out his peerless "America, The Beautiful" with some beautiful scenery on the jumbotron if they want to be all patriotic.
Now that'll get the patriotic juices flowing. That song gives me goosebumps every time. Way better than that GBA dreck, IMHO.

I just want to make sure i did not accidentally turn the new features off.
Cliq Gameday Blog
A: The Pitch-f/x technology is currently up and running in eight ballparks -- Atlanta, Chicago (White Sox), Los Angeles (Angels and Dodgers), San Diego, Seattle, Texas and Toronto -- so this new data is currently only available for games played in those ballparks. However, the system will be operational in all 30 ballparks by the end of the season, so expect to see the Pitch-f/x data for more and more games as the season progresses.

Listening to Vin Scully call Dodger home games. He is just so, so good.

I'm relatively certain that I heard
If (and I'm not positive -- I'm gonna try and find a link) Carpenter had a cortisone shot, is that different than the lubricant previously injected and does that indicate that Carp is having pain?
