Game 10 Open Thread: April 13, 2007

sheets

reyes

1-1, 3.60

0-1, 5.40

if they get the game in tonight (very questionable proposition, i'm told), anthony reyes will make his 20th major-league start --- and his fifth against the brewers. here are the previous four:

IP H R ER BB SO HR
august 9, 2005  6.1  2  2  2  1  5  1  W
august 5, 2006  5  5  3  3  3  6  1  W
september 18, 2006  5.1  5  2  2  1  9  1
october 1, 2006  0.2  5  4  4  0  2  2  L

solanus charted reyes' start last weekend vs the astros, and the question that jumps right out at you is --- wha' happened to the changeup? i watched the first two innings and noticed right away that he wasn't throwing it. on the 9th pitch of the game, reyes lobbed a high changeup to morgan ensberg, who scorched it down the line for a homer . . . . . . but foul by a few feet. the next hitter, lance berkman, singled on a 3-2 changeup; a few moments later, on pitch #23 of the game, reyes tossed a low changeup to carlos lee with two men on and one out, and lee jerked a 400-foot rainbow to left field line for a three-run homer . . . . also foul.

from that point forward, reyes --- having thrown five changeups in the first four batters of the game --- would throw only six more changeups. he flat-out lost faith in the pitch --- or maybe his catcher did. maybe dave 'n' tony thought he was tipping it; that happened in game 4 of the nlcs vs the mets, if memory serves, and they had reyes start pitching off the stretch to eliminate the tell. in any case, 55 of reyes' last 72 pitches vs the astros were fastballs --- 6 were changeups, and the other 11 were that slurvey thing he throws.

without the changeup, he's a sitting duck; he absolutely must change speeds to be effective.

i'm starting to sour
on reyes a little. I have a good feeling about tonight for some reason, but he can't be a 5 inning pitcher with a 89-91 mph fastball and nothing else.

perhaps it doesn't make a difference...
but doesn't Reyes really look like he chunked up during the off-season?

He would've..
made pretty nice trade bait over the winter...

LOVE IT!
except p-dub, but i still think he will come through with a HR eventually. john rodriguez for right field! too bad it's probaly not going to happen tonight.

by stlcardinalsfang on Apr 13, 2007 6:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd like to see
This in the lineup

.298/.378/.434 batting second and move Duncan between Pulols and Rolen.

or even this projection of that player

.277/.352/.461

but alas John Rodriguez is nowhere to be found.

Now maybe he's an ass and we would all be better off without him. That's fine. Then dump him.

For the life of me I have no idea what Skips job is. He hasn't played CF. He hasn't been used as a PR when everyone stops to wait for him to come out. He's on the PH list just above Bennett and Wainwright.

Do you think that Edmonds is a Superhero and Skip is his sidekick? Man I miss Heroes when is it coming back again?

by Harknights on Apr 13, 2007 6:37 PM EDT   0 recs

He played Center
On Tuesday's 12 inning game, from the 8th on. He's also got the strong arm to play right—unfortunately, he hasn't shown the strong bat you need to play right regularly.

by liam on Apr 13, 2007 6:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If you're going...
...to count ALL the innings played I guess.

Kind of takes the wind  out of the argument when your main point is wrong.

by Harknights on Apr 13, 2007 11:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe
Tony hates us and is punishing us with P-Dub.

I don't mind P-Dub against LHP, but against RHP he's about as useful as a dead fish. Why does Tony love him so much?

by VORP is too nerdy on Apr 13, 2007 6:42 PM EDT   0 recs

C'mon now!
That's not true!

Why, in that 12-inning game this past Tuesday Preston, um...

You see, P-Dub's splits against right-handed pitchers only, uh...

Hey, a dead fish can be pretty darn useful if...ummm.

Ah, hell.  I got nuthin.

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Weather
I don't see any way they will play ball tonight. I just looked at the radar map and it is nasty! I hope I am wrong.

Erik Reyes
I didn't know until just now that Reyes has a younger brother who pitches at Concordia at Irvine.

His last outing wasn't pretty.

That is all.

by liam on Apr 13, 2007 7:00 PM EDT   0 recs

wow the tide turning on reyes?
Not that those who posted earlier in this thread have been the type that believe he is the next Cy young, but I can't believe that after a year and one start people are sowering...

Tonight he could be that Flash that we have all seen...it's the consistency part i know i hunger for...I'm not sure what they could have gotten for him just byhimself during the winter..sample size too small... it would have had to been packaged with somethin else..

Season is short still so we will see...I really dont think you can draw too many conclusions this early..

Kenny is a "dirt" bag?

by punchinjudy on Apr 13, 2007 7:12 PM EDT   0 recs

I still like Reyes.....
and I hope he does well, and I still think it's too early to write him off.  While we're all quietly hoping for J Rod to be put on the roster, did you notice that Rick Ankiel has hit two three run homer this week for Memphis?  Could it be that he just might sneak back up here and fix part of the outfield problem?  Now THAT would be a story.....

Old School Gameday
For those who prefer the old version of gameday, I ran the script to make all the links for the coming week.

Here's tonight's gameday.

The rest are here.

Enjoy the game, hope it's not rained out.

by liam on Apr 13, 2007 7:40 PM EDT   0 recs

In Houston
Oswalt took 48 pitches to get through the first inning. 4BB, 3ER. Ouch.

by effin fisk on Apr 13, 2007 7:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Compared to Oswalt's start last weekend
Gameday showed today's game with Oswalt throwing 46 pitches in the first inning. This past Saturday, his 46th pitch was hit for a double by Scott Spiezio ... to lead off the fifth inning.
Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time.

by Solanus on Apr 13, 2007 8:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oswalt would never do
that against the Cardinals; he's Cy Young when he faces US.  It's good to know that even he has a bad day once in awhile.

by jillsinmo on Apr 13, 2007 7:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Carlos Lee hits a slam
its now 5-3 'stros in the top of the third. I guess if you're a Card fan you want the 'stros to score all their runs for this weeks runs in a single game that Oswalt is pitching, instead of in the other games.

by Podlol on Apr 13, 2007 8:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Oswalt at 58 pitches after two,
Maybe teh 'stros bullpen  ( the soft underbelly) will get a lot of work tonight

by Podlol on Apr 13, 2007 8:12 PM EDT   0 recs

What si the weather like in STL
are the Judy's (my new name for the team since they have no Punch) going to get to play?

by Podlol on Apr 13, 2007 8:14 PM EDT   0 recs

Its barely even sprinkling out
but since it probably wont stop at all in the next few hours, I don't see how they'll be able to start the game tonight. If it ends up sleeting/snowing later tonight/ tomorrow morn, the field will be in rough shape for tomorrows game.

The weather over the last two weeks has already reigned havoc on my fantasy team, I guess it is time for it to catch up with the Cards.

Cheers

Soured on Reyes
I haven't soured on the guy, I just didn't think he was that great from day one.  Now Wagonmaker on the other hand...

by Zubin on Apr 13, 2007 8:38 PM EDT   0 recs

hmm zubin
didnt know that about you it has always seemed that I have been inthe minority when I have said "wait and See" on reyes...too soon to write him off too soon to say he's CY Young
Kenny is a "dirt" bag?

by punchinjudy on Apr 13, 2007 9:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

didnt quite
excpect the numbers, but you think he'll go lots of innings? Just by multiple starts or deep in games? I don't see him going that deep in games..5-6 tops.. right now he seems to throw too many pitches early in games
Kenny is a "dirt" bag?

by punchinjudy on Apr 13, 2007 10:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

As I wrote before,
lots of innings by way of lots of games.  Looking back I think I over-estimated his innings pitched, I should have written 180 ip or so.

by Zubin on Apr 13, 2007 11:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

'Stros got 3 more for O but he just gave up a run
now its 8/4 stros in the 4th. Hoep the phils can get to the bullpen

Game's postponed
Just posted at the Cards home page...

no game tonight
tomorrow's start moved to 6:10pm according to the radio

I'm hoping Extra Innings picks it up (assuming they can play)

should be perfect

I have tickets
I was supposed to celebrate my birthday with a lovely weekend of baseball. Now it looks like that weekend is going to be cold and miserable.

Uh oh
I have tickets to the game Sunday but I can only make it if it's the original start time of 1 oclock.

Are they playing a DH tomorrow or what?  What are the odds sundays game will be moved and if it is, what's the return policy?

Leave the managing to Tony!!

Just saw some info about pitchers for tomorrow
at Yahoo Sports. It's going to be the Kipper against Soup.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap;_ylt=Amp2n5tklnF4KvIUy.Jyx0MRvLYF?gid=270413124
"The Cardinals pushed back Anthony Reyes, who had completed his warmups, to Monday with Kip Wells starting on Saturday. Ben Sheets, the Brewers' scheduled starter, was pushed back to Sunday with Jeff Suppan starting on Saturday."

Pisser
I was keen for Soup v. Loop.

by liam on Apr 14, 2007 3:57 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually, this rainout is good
in that it eliminates the need to pitch Keisler against the Cubs at Wrigley next weekend.  We now only have games 9 days in a row.  So, Keisler should pitch the 5th one on Wednesday rather than pitching Tuesday and again next Sunday.  Good news on that front.

by CardFaninVA on Apr 13, 2007 10:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Off topic, but..
did anyone else get the Sports pack from DirecTV?

If you ever consider doing it, don't. It's totally useless. Every single sports game is blacked out.

by VORP is too nerdy on Apr 13, 2007 11:24 PM EDT   0 recs

DISH is the same way
only good for college basketball and football games on the west coast. all nhl, nba&mlb games are blocked out.

we're going to have to get DTV next week to watch the Cardinals on EI. Time Warner in ohio does not carry all the EI channels. I'm not getting rid of DISH, just going to add DTV to the one tv dad & I watch the Cardinals on.

by gdm426 on Apr 14, 2007 12:11 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, it depends...
For those of us out of market, we get the opportunity with Sports Pack to see the Cards pre-game and post-game shows on FSN Midwest, which we wouldn't otherwise get to see.

It gives me the choice of TiVo-ing games on the Sports Pack channels that are carrying the game (Midwest, or the opposing team, if the Cardinals are on the road), instead of the 6-hour games on the Extra Innings channels.

If you're considering getting it only for Cardinals games, then VORP is right, it's probably not worth the cost. You can get all the games available through Extra Innings. If you want to be able to see pre and post-game shows of the Cardinals or any other team, it may be worth $10/month.

by player2bnamedl8r on Apr 14, 2007 12:19 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pre/Post game shows
are not worth 12$ a month. All you get is the same kind of analysis you see on VEB anyway.

I just think it sucks that the "sports pack" basically consists of pre/post game shows and the best damn sports show period.

by VORP is too nerdy on Apr 14, 2007 2:40 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Scratch that
the analysis on FSN Midwest isn't as good as VEB.
