nothing in particular
couple of items buried in goold's long postgame edition of Bird Land. first of all, the cardinals released several players yesterday, including quadruple A outfielder miguel negron. you might recall negron's name came up in a question for jeff luhnow about the logjam in memphis' outfield; his ouster helps further to clarify that picture, and it's yet another hint about how the organization is allocating opportunities. here's a status report:
quadruple A guys
eli marrero: converted back to catcher
ryan ludwick: memphis bound
john rodriguez: memphis bound (my opinion only --- discussion below)
skip schumaker: cards' opening-day roster (discussion below)
up from double A
reid gorecki: memphis bound
cody haerther: on the dl, then back to springfield
nick stavinoha: making a case for memphis
miguel negron: released
special cases
rick ankiel: memphis bound
amaury marti: i dunno
discussion: with encarnacion opening the season on the DL, either j-rod or schumaker will make the opening-day cut --- and it appears that schumaker has won that spot. j-rod has been nearly invisible in recent games, while schumaker is appearing daily; schumaker is hitting .400, plays better defense than any st louis outfielder except edmonds, and is liked by the manager. j-rod's only chance to stick appears tied to an unlikely, but not impossible, development: the release of so taguchi. so-so is now tied for 2d (at best) with schumaker on the centerfield depth chart, and he's no better than 3d at the corners (preston wilson and scott spiezio apparently are the main backups). on a five-man bench, i don't see what dimension he adds.
to return to the memphis outfield: assuming taguchi gets the benefit of the doubt, i reckon the AAA will start ludwick in left, gorecki in center, and ankiel in right, with rodriguez and stavinoha on the bench. that'd leave rasmus, jay, haerther, marti, and joe mather for the double A outfield; sounds about right. when encarnacion returns from the dl and an outfielder has to move . . . . . well, let's worry about that one later.
the other piece of news from yesterday's Bird Land: brian falkenborg threw 2 innings in memphis' spring training game. which means, i surmise, he has accepted his assignment to triple A. that's good news, imho; the st louis bullpen might need some innings from him at some point. the top relief options at memphis will probably be falkenborg, dove, and jimenez, with cavazos behind them and mark worrell an emergencies-only option. as long as we're projecting triple A rosters, the pitching staff down there is getting pretty crowded; keisler narveson and hawksworth seem like locks for the rotation, and chris lambert almost surely has the 4th slot. that leaves troy cate, mike parisi, matt ginter, and mike smith to battle it out for the 5th and final slot. i gotta think cate has the inside track there, but parisi also has a case; he reportedly has looked pretty strong this spring. i'd be fine with either of those options --- both players are on the 40-man and might have a future. ginter has no future, but he does not appear to be an entirely lost cause (career stats here); one can imagine him turning in a josh hancock-like season or two, if things go well. mike smith --- lost cause.
one other piece of bullpen news: the cards dodged the bullet with jorge julio, who got traded yesterday to the marlins. according to ken rosenthal, the cardinals and marlins had been the leading suitors. close call; i'm glad he wound up elsewhere.
miscellania:
- it's not looking good for kerry wood. all three of the most dominant nl central pitchers of this decade, arguably, turned out just to be bright flashes in the pan: rick ankiel, kerry wood, and mark prior.
- john thomson failed to make the blue jays' roster. during the winter i had thought thomson looked like an attractive low-cost option; but when the mariners withdrew their contract offer to him and he landed nothing better than a six-figure deal, it was pretty clear the guy's health was a huge question mark. the cardinals (and other teams) obviously had good dope on the guy; his shoulder's not sound. on the other hand, tomo ohka --- another low-renter in the blue jays' camp --- has pitched his way into the rotation with a strong spring. he's inked to a $1.5m base, with another $750K due if he makes 30 starts.
- blowhard pitcher, meet blowhard sportswriter.
- Baseball Reference.com is looking for bloggers; good opportunity, could be loads of fun.
- tangotiger is running a massive community projection project; i meant to link to this a few weeks ago, but it slipped through the cracks. tango's fan scouting reports of fielding have worked their way into the zeitgeist as a viable alternative to objective defensive measuring systems like UZR and dewan; likewise, his community forecasts will pit the wisdom of the crowds against the number-crunching power of PECOTA and ZIPS and so forth. here's the cardinals' page.
- i got a note from geoff young of Ducksnorts, the outstanding padres blog; he's put out the 2007 Ducksnorts Baseball Annual, which you can buy in paperback or electronic versions. sandy alderson wrote the foreword. i haven't seen the book yet, but i've gotten familiar with Ducksnorts over the last two years because the cards keep playing the padres in the nlds, and i know geoff's a great writer and analyst, a regular at Hardball Times. here's a review and an interview with the author.

Taguchi has no appreciable skills
JRod belongs on the roster. He actually belongs in RF (Encarneasada being hurt should have cleared the way for this but instead Spiezio/Wilson will get some time there.) I can't even express how frustrating this is. Not only is JRod the best player for RF right now but he's CHEAP. Why are we wasting 1.5 million on Preston Wilson -- for the supposed power? I don't think Wilson has anything left in the tank.

Well, he has looked damn
The problem here is that TLR is going to give So a couple of miles of rope before he pulls the plug. Even if So sucks in the regular season, it could easily be July before TLR submits to the inevitable. In the meantime, we pass up who knows how many opportunities to bring in a better player while Tony waits for Gooch to raise his game. Or, we trade away someone w/in our system who could fill his place right now. It's all about opportunity cost.

This year, though, the roster slots and opportunities need to go to players who will use them more effectively and (maybe) improve.
I like the Wilson/muscle car analogy, but you left out, "stalls a lot." Gooch, sadly, is a Yugo with 189,000 miles on the odometer - an economy option that needs to be replaced.

So and Skip
Rodriguez isn't much better. Even if his defense is adequate and his BA is pretty good, we haven't seen any of the power he flashed for a few AB's 2 years ago. He's a .285 singles hitter who can't hit lefties, can't play CF, and can barely play RF and LF. What exactly does he add? If it's that he's better than So, I ask, so?
The problem w/ our OF is that we have a bunch of 5th OF types + Juan who's a 4th OF type and need a starter. A lot of depth but not much quality. It's too bad we can't package about 4 of those guys for a real RF, but no one is that stupid. In looking around at other teams' rosters, I really don't see many options to trade for either -- maybe Kevin Mench of Milwaukee but is he any different offensively, really, than Juan? And he's worse defensively!

Concur
Incidentally, why do J-Rod fans not favor Spiezio over 'Nacion and J-Rod? Speez has demonstrated power, he bats switch, and averages about the same and Juan. What about Speez persuades folks that Speez primarily is a bench player, while J-Rod is a unrecognized starter?

Spiezio
by Don Zero on Mar 27, 2007 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
.800 OPS isn't something that anyone outside
Preston Wilson is still living off the good will that emanates from 2003. JRod was buried in the NYY organization for a long time, so him not making it to the majors isn't necessarily indicative of him not being a good player.
I could live with Spiezio getting some ABs in RF but Wilson and Encarnacion have HORRIBLE OBPs. Wilson isn't that great defensively and Juan only had .011 SLG points on JRod last year.
Saying that he's a "singles hitter who can't hit lefties" is misleading on two accounts. First, he walks in more than 10% of his PAs a skill that isn't accounted for in his AVG. Second, he has no appreciable split in the majors. We're talking about 300+ ABs or about half a season. It's not a huge sample size but look at his minor league track record -- it bears out his ability to draw walks and hit for moderate power. Give him everyday ABs and we would have an adequate offensive RF. Not great, not horrible -- adequate. And better than anyone else currently on the roster (with the exception of perhaps Spiezio).
What justifies sending him down to Memphis? If Taguchi, Schumaker and Wilson all make the team and JRod doesn't, that's my problem. We're talking the three worst hitters for our bench over one of the best hitters on the team, much more so the bench.
by azruavatar on Mar 27, 2007 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Perfectly put
I've been very impressed with Schumaker's spring. Maybe his offseason batting session with Big Mac really did improve his swing. He's been seriously raking it, and he has a decent number of Spring ABs (45) to support the very impressive 1.049 OPS:
AB H 2B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG
45 18 2 2 6 5 5 1 0 .400 .471 .578
With his defense, speed, and now the 2nd most hits on the club this spring, I'd say he's definitely earned a roster spot as our backup CF.
by Mr Clean on Mar 27, 2007 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm fine with Skip as the late inning defense guy
He hit .348/.385/.348 last spring and then posted a .308 OBP during his brief stint in at the beginning of last year. He may have made progress but I'm not ready to believe yet...
by azruavatar on Mar 27, 2007 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My point wasn't
I'll grant you that his OBP is better than most, but that doesn't make him useful vs. lefties, where he is far below average. In his minor league career, he has 1 season of more than 20 hrs and has exactly 7 major league homers in more than 300 AB's. Perhaps that's a relatively small sample and it reflects sporadic playing time but it surely doesn't indicate that there's a lot of power there.
He is a better hitter than Taguchi, Wilson, and Skip but he's not a better fit for the roster than Spiezio. And I stand corrected when I called him a singles hitter. He's a singles hitter who can also walk but he adds almost nothing else. If given regular playing time he'd likely hit a few homers, but so will Spiezio. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a roster spot, but he's hardly the answer in right either.
A decent compromise would be some sort of platoon involving Rodriguez and Encarnacion but it would still leave our RF as one of the worst in the NL. If he moves on, are we appreciably worse off? An unequivocal NO! Will keeping Taguchi and losing Rodriguez cost us wins? No.
Rodriguez would make for a pretty good 4th or 5th OF who can play the corner spots and pinch-hit vs. righties and start every 4th or 5th game to give the starter a rest. But I'd almost rather try Stavinoha or someone than watch Rodriguez walk, hit singles to right and grounders to 2nd.
by chuckb on Mar 27, 2007 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe, maybe not
His minor league splits don't look so hot, but he had a 1.240 OPS against lefties last year (in 17 PA) and a .737 OPS in 2005 against lefties (in 34 PA). So his MLB split against lefties is a hefty .901 OPS. Obviously small sample size applies, but he should get the benefit of the doubt. You can't just assume he's going to fail against lefties because he is a lefty himself, imho...

by SleepyCA on Mar 27, 2007 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Disagree
I can see where it could. Think about it this way, in terms of the proposed pseudo-platoon.
Edmonds still had a .947 OPS last year against RHP. This would leave one to think that when he sits, he should sit against lefties. By design, that would work out to a nice round 30 or so games on the bench. That sounds about right.
Now, Taguchi's role on the team would be the backup CF'er I am guessing. Also a late-inning defensive replacement for Duncan I suppose. Now, if you were to carry J-Rod, and IF he maintains his .800 OPS, you could give him at least 300 AB by starting him in RF when Encarnacion shifts to CF to cover for Edmonds, NOT Taguchi because his bat probably doesn't play anywhere, not even CF. You give him some spot starts against righties and feature a left-handed outfield ever now and again, and use him as a valuable left-handed pinch hitter.
I haven't done the math at all, but I'd bet you've improved the team by 10-20 runs right there. All the while you have Wilson hanging around as well.
by plh903 on Mar 27, 2007 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll try to be concise (but probably will fail)
Look at his splits in the majors - no split on OBP vs. LH pitchers. In fact, JRod would be, imho, a better idea to hit leadoff than Eckstein (but that's another discussion). He gets on base at a better clip and past baserunning gaffes aside is a better, albeit weak, threat to run in a SB situation, hit and run, etc.
Using counting stats is misleading given the number of atbats he was getting in the minors. Assuming he played a full season's worth of ~500ABs he would have hit 20 homers every year since and including 2000 (excepting last year).
re: platoon with Encarneasada
JRod gets on base more than Juan and Juan only hit for .011 more SLG points last year...I'm not sure that a platoon is really applicable but I'd be open to it.
re: Stavinoha
He had an injury plagued year at AA last year. Let him prove he can hit high minors pitchers before giving him a shot at the bigs.
The bottom line is that JRod is better as a package (offense and defense) than Taguchi and probably close to Juan, Wilson and Schumaker. He has the best skill set to hit on a regular basis in RF outside of Spiezio -- and he may very well be sent to the minors. He could be the 5th best hitter on the team! How TLR can justify that is beyond me.

They Expected Better
I wouldn't call it stupidity, but given the past typical turnover, it was different this winter, and only clouded judgement from a championship could have played into the logic for re-signing these two. J-Rod is hanging on the perennial wishful thinking that many of us have continuing to pull for someone that may never make it. Again, I just can't believe in that context that they would let these guys go now. I won't be surprised if neither of them make it to the end of April. And, i think any of the prospective replacements can do better.
Duncan was our surprise over-performer last year. I'd rather try another with that type of chance. I don't know who that might be, but we can count out so and pw, and probably jrod too.
